DemocracyFest 2008 Schedule

Written by: Jessica Falker on Jul 8, 2008 11:56 AM EDT

 The 5th Annual DemocracyFest will be held on August 16-17, 2008 in Dulles, VA, just outside Washington, DC.

Get your tickets today at $20 off the regular price!
http://www.DemocracyFest.net

The DemocracyFest schedule includes many exciting trainings, speakers and entertainers again this year!

Democracy For America (DFA) will conduct trainings for activists on subjects including Canvassing & Phone Banking, Working with the Media, Event Planning, Mobilizing Young Voters and Fundraising. Whether you've worked in politics for years, are running for office yourself, or are a newcomer to volunteering, you'll find these trainings informative and useful!

Speakers this year will include Gov. Howard Dean (speech free and open to the public), Jeffrey Feldman, Jim Dean, Charlie Grapski, Nathan Gonzales, and more! We are currently awaiting confirmation from additional exciting speakers, but we do have a few more speaking slots available if you or someone you know is interested in speaking at DemocracyFest, please contact us at info@democracyfest.net

As always, DemocracyFest is as much about "celebration" as "education" and this year will be no different! Entertainers will include Subway Serenade, Bobby Kendes, and more! Plus, there will be parties late into the night on both Friday and Saturday nights!

Check the DemocracyFest schedule on our website often as we will be adding more details and speakers and entertainers as they are confirmed:

Lastly, we can't forget to mention the social interation and networking aspect of DemocracyFest. While it's not on the schedule, many attendees feel this is the most important part of the event. There will be many leaders from organizations there that you can talk to and learn what they've been up to, what is working well for them and what isn't. This is a unique opportunity to see old friends again and meet new ones. The inspiration of being surrounded by like-minded activists for a weekend, networking and planning with those activists and using what you've learned from each other to move forward and make a difference is priceless.

We look forward to seeing you there!

- Lunch????????

By linda b on Jul 8, 2008 3:45 PM EDT

With only an hour for lunch, the places should be nearby. Can't the hotel have a buffet or something??
And Saturday is a busy day in that area for restaurants.
Just my take.

There are 2 restaurants in the hotel, and there are several places around that deliver too.

We could have had lunch buffets included, but that would have meant increasing the ticket price and we always try to keep that as low as possible. This way gives people the option of having a light (less expensive) lunch, bringing their own lunch, or just skipping lunch, which I often do.

just don't want late comers to mess up your schedules. I am sure Rich knows more about the area than I do.

looks like they are going to do a mini-DFA Training from the speakers who are excellent Denise, I've been to two already so might slip into town for some sightseeing as I haven't yet seen the Newseum

This is pretty funny...

I originally had:

"We are currently awaiting confirmation from more exciting speakers"

But someone at Kos pointed out that no one is more exciting then Gov. Dean, so I should change "more" to "additional".

Luckily I had time to change it here before it was front paged, and in the email we sent out too.

- Charlie Grapski as dinner speaker should be fun.

I went out and bought a copy of the Federalist Papers after the original Deanfest being inspired by Charlie. I've been mulling through the No.62 discussion of the Senate today. and if I hadn't heard Charlie I wouldn't have found this.( p.411MetroBooks version) Obama should consider this after saying don't worry about FISA we can fix it next year "a continual change even of good measures is inconsistent of every rule of prudence and every prospect of success."

(...)

"An individual who is observed to be inconstant to his plans, or perhaps to carry on his affairs without any plan at all, is marked at once, by all prudent people, as a speedy victim to his own unsteadiness and folly. His more friendly neighbors may pity him, and all will decline to connect their fortunes with his; and not a few will seize the opportunity of making their fortunes out of his."

(...)

"Every nation, consequently, whose affairs betray a want of wisdom and stability, may calculate on every loss which can be sustained from the more systematic policy of their wiser neighbors."

(...)

"The internal effects of a mutable policy are still more calamitous. It poisons the blessing of liberty itself."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obama's last statement on FISA that I heard from the campaign was we can fix it next year, and my answer is get it right the first time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you Charlie Grapski for being willing to go to jail for your defense of democracy.I'll see you at Dulles

I refence this Federalist Paper because Charlie lectured on it at Deanfest I and I've spent many interesting hours pondering the wisdom of the writers of our Constitution which Bush has trashed since I purchased that book at Charlie's urging.

- I can't seem to reply to Denise's question, so I'll try this way

By Jessica Falker on Jul 8, 2008 5:19 PM EDT

DFA is organizing the trainings and Jim Dean will be speaking. They're also a monetary sponsor every year.

I'm hoping they will be sending out a national email about the event soon, but I havn't nagged them about that recently ;-)

Default_user

- Thanks - glad they are sponsoring again. That is what I was most interested it.
