Left-Wing Extremists

Published: Apr 10, 2008 12:42 PM

You and I have seen this attack before.

Yesterday morning, the Miami Herald quoted Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart calling Joe Garcia and his supporters "left-wing extremists."

"Joe Garcia continues to align himself with left-wing extremists. The latest to join the ranks is Congressman Charlie Rangel," reads a statement from Diaz-Balart's campaign.

"He has a long and well-known history of supporting a radical left-wing agenda including supporting higher taxes on working families and appeasing our nation's enemies. Left-wing birds of a feather, tax and spend together."

I know we will not just stand aside and let these attacks go unanswered. Let's show this Bush-Republican machine what we can do when "birds of a feather" really flock together, contribute $20.08 to Joe Garcia right now.

http://www.actblue.com/page/supportjoe

During our Dean for America days together, we learned to always fight back.

Now, I'm the Senior Advisor to Joe Garcia's powerful campaign to take back south Florida. The early endorsement of Democracy for America led the way in bringing us a national spotlight, and helped us grow our people-powered, grassroots campaign. DFA members provide us with boots on the ground and the small-donor, financial support to back them up.

Beat a Republican Extremist

Published: Mar 27, 2008 12:36 PM

I know you've heard of Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe.

He claimed that Global Warming is "the second-largest hoax ever played on the American people, after the separation of church and state." He believes the Weather Channel is behind the hoax to attract viewers. And he's compared environmentalists to "Nazis" and the Environmental Protection Agency to the "Gestapo."

We can make this Sen. Inhofe's last year in office.

Andrew Rice has a proven record in the Oklahoma Legislature having worked on issues like health care, veteran's rights, and the environment.  Andrew will bring his experience to Washington to fight to end the War in Iraq, provide access to health care for all Americans, and solve the crisis of global warming.

Andrew Rice is the progressive Democrat who will finally bring change to Oklahoma. Support Andrew's campaign with a contribution of $25 right now.

Fight McCain

Published: Mar 17, 2008 3:23 PM

The Democratic race for President has lost its focus. We have John McCain to beat in November, instead we fight each other.

Geraldine Ferraro. Reverend Wright. Rezko ties. Secret tax returns. If you're like me; you're sick of it.

We have a war to end, an economy in trouble, and $4 gas.

With hundreds of progressives to elect at all levels of office, it's time to leave the character attacks to Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly.

America needs to know why our candidates are better than John McCain and we need to hear it from Senators Clinton and Obama.

Fight McCain, not each other. Join me in signing an open letter to the candidates now:

Chairman Reyes responds. Our answer: Prove it.

Published: Mar 6, 2008 2:38 PM

NOTE: The complete letter from Chairman Reyes to DFA is re-printed at the end of this post. Please click 'Read More' below to jump to the end.

Chairman Reyes responds. Our answer: Prove it.

Our campaign demanding Chairman Reyes stand up to President Bush is working. After 1,922 reported calls, the Chairman's Chief Counsel, Jeremy Bash, contacted DFA and insisted that we were "shooting the wrong target."

Our answer was simple: Prove it.

This morning, DFA received a letter that the Chairman asked we post on our website. Sadly, the Chairman still gets it wrong:

"The issue is how to craft legislation that only protects companies that acted lawfully."

Chairman Reyes: they don't need immunity if they didn't break the law. America doesn't need parsed words and legalese, America requires leadership.

Chairman Reyes got your calls; let's make sure he gets the message. Contribute $25 right now, so we can run ads that turn up the heat on Chairman Reyes.

www.DemocrayforAmerica.com/FISAads

Chairman Reyes has stood up to President Bush before, he must do it again.

On Feb 12, the Chairman wrote "it is an insult to the intelligence of the American people to say that we will be vulnerable unless we grant immunity for actions that happened years ago."

Last August, he voted against the Administration's bill, the Protect America Act. Last month, he insisted that Congress stand firm and not simply rubber-stamp the Senate FISA bill, despite over-heated rhetoric from the President that doing so would somehow endanger the country. He knew better, and he called out the President on his false rhetoric.

But last weekend, Chairman Reyes said "after receiving documents from the Bush administration and speaking to the [telecommunication] companies" a deal was likely "within the next week."

Rep. Reyes doesn't need to make a deal with President Bush and Vice President Cheney. He must hold the Bush administration accountable and not let AT&T and Verizon off the hook for spying on innocent  Americans. Contribute $25 right now and send a clear message to Chairman Reyes to stand up to President Bush.

Fight Back

Published: Mar 5, 2008 2:27 PM

President Bush and his stooges are back on the attack. They screamed that our country would be in imminent danger of terrorist attack if Congress did not renew his program of warrantless wiretapping.

They were wrong.

It's been 10 days since the law expired and yesterday four top intelligence officials sent a letter to Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell refuting his claims of impending doom:

"[The country is not] at greater risk. The intelligence community currently has the tools it needs to acquire surveillance of new targets and methods of communication."¹

President Bush doesn't care about the truth. A brand new right-wing attack group is already running ads targeting 15 House Democrats who stood up to Bush and voted against immunity for telecommunication companies who spied on innocent Americans.

Contribute $20 to DFA right now so we can fight back against the right-wing fear machine.

www.actblue.com/page/fisafightback

The Republicans in Congress will not let immunity die. In fact, Republicans rejected an extension of the current law because House Democrats stood up and refused to let Bush's telecom cronies off the hook. More proof that immunity for their law-breaking telecom buddies is all the Bush Administration cares about.

DFA will fight back against the Bush Administration and their right wing attack dogs. Together, we can make sure House Democrats stand strong.

Don't let Bush's telecom buddies have the "get out of jail free" card they want. Contribute $20 right now so DFA can stop telecom immunity once and for all.

Stop Chairman Reyes

Published: Mar 4, 2008 3:50 PM

Last week, Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic majority stood up to the President’s fear mongering. They killed the Senate bill on FISA that included retroactive immunity for telecommunication companies who spied on innocent Americans.

But Republicans want to bring immunity back to life and the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Silvestre Reyes (TX-16) said over the weekend he was ready to make the deal. We must stop him.

Call Rep. Reyes right now and demand he stands with the Democratic majority and against telecom immunity.

Intelligence Committee Chairman,
Rep. Silvestre Reyes
(202) 225-7690

Suggested Script:

"As the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Reyes must stand with Speaker Pelosi and the majority of House Democrats against telecom immunity.

I am depending on Chairman Reyes to stand up to President Bush and protect America without granting a get-out-of-jail free card to companies that broke the law."

Please report how your call went:
www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/ReyesCalls

Make sure Chairman Reyes hears from you today. He needs to know we are counting on him. He needs to know that if he won’t stand up to President Bush, then DFA members will find someone to replace him who will.

Take Back South Florida

Published: Feb 28, 2008 8:20 PM

South Florida has a problem. This overwhelmingly Democratic stronghold that delivers a significant margin of victory for the Democratic Presidential nominee every four years is represented in Congress by reactionary, right-wing Bush-Republicans.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart in FL-25 is one of the worst. He voted against expanding the Children's Health Plan to cover 10 million kids -- three times. He voted to grant immunity to telecommunication companies who spied on Americans. He supports the President's warrantless wiretapping and wants the government to read your emails and listen to your phone calls. And of course, he voted for the war and every single bill to fund or expand it.

Today, Democrat Joe Garcia joins the DFA-List and DFA members are already the boots on the ground working to make sure Joe wins. Back up their hard work with the power of our national community calling for change. Contribute $20.08 right now.

www.actblue.com/page/supportjoe

For 20 years, Joe Garcia has been a leader on the issues that affect the lives of real people. Joe understands that health care needs to be reliable, available and affordable. He supports expanding coverage to 10 million children immediately and will fight to bring health care to all Americans.

Joe will fight to end to the War in Iraq responsibly and bring our brave men and women home. He will strengthen the middle class by bringing new jobs to Florida and making college affordable. He will clean up the environment and protect the Florida everglades from big business polluters and reckless development.

Will party insiders overturn your vote?

Published: Feb 13, 2008 8:01 PM

This is an unprecedented year. Thirty-seven states and U.S. territories have already voted and we don't have a clear nominee. Senators Clinton and Obama are in a delegate race to the nomination.

There are a lot of ways that delegates get assigned to a specific candidate, but almost all of the allocated delegates are directly tied and bound by the actual votes in each primary or caucus -- all of them that is, except super-delegates.

Super-delegates are a contingent of almost 900 elected officials, party insiders, and current DNC members and they aren't required to follow the voters. In fact, after every Democrat has voted and the last allocated delegates are assigned, super-delegates have the power to overturn the popular vote and crown a different winner.

That's right, if super-delegates don't like who you choose to be our nominee, they can overturn your vote. We can't let that happen. Our nominee must be chosen by Democratic voters, not by back room deals of the party elite. Sign our petition now to let the voters decide:

www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/VotersDecide

We must respect the 20 million Democrats who have already voted and the millions more who will vote before the convention. It's up to us to make sure the almost 900 super-delegates do the right thing.

Sign the petition today and we'll deliver all of the signatures directly to super-delegates.

Nancy Skinner is the 2008 DFA Grassroots All-Star!

Please contribute $25 right now and support our winner.

Nancy stands for progressive values. She has a plan to turn Michigan's auto industry green. This will expand and rebuild our national economy and Michigan's industry base. We can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign oil while improving the global environment. Nancy knows that if Congress is going to get serious in our fight to end global warming, we need a representative from Detroit leading the way.

Nancy will fight for health care for everyone. She proudly supports expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Plan to cover 10 million American kids. Her opponent voted with President Bush and supported his veto of the plan.

Nancy will fight to end the War in Iraq and bring our troops home. Her opponent voted for the authorization and has rushed to support President Bush's reckless war at every step of the way.

Nancy will win, but not without your support. Please contribute $25 right now to make change happen.

The Winner of the 2008 DFA Grassroots All-Star endorsement will be announced today. Check back later to see who won.

Final Round Voting Starts Now

Published: Jan 31, 2008 6:02 PM

After 38,398 votes, the first round of nominations for the DFA 2008 Grassroots All-Star endorsement is over. Your votes propelled three candidates running for the U.S. House of Representatives to the final All-Star voting round. Now, this is your chance to choose the winner!

Listed in the order of their final vote count, here are your All-Star finalist:

Nancy Skinner - Michigan District 9

Cast your vote for the DFA 2008 Grassroots All-Star now

Nancy ran in 2006 against 14-year incumbent Republican Joe Knollenberg. She fought hard, ran a people-powered campaign and drove the progressive movement forward. Out-spent nearly 7 to 1, Nancy astonished the Republican establishment by forcing the smallest victory margin in Representative Knollenberg's 8 elections.

Nancy knows what she needs to do to win, but she can't do it without your help. Read more about her campaign or cast your vote now:

Larry Kissell - North Carolina District 8

Cast your vote for the DFA 2008 Grassroots All-Star now

Larry is another example of a hard earned, people-powered campaign that drove the progressive movement forward while just missing victory in 2006. Incumbent Republican Robin Hayes out spent Larry by millions, yet Larry's campaign came only 330 votes short of victory.

Larry has never stopped fighting to win, but he needs your help to take his campaign over the top. Read more about his campaign or cast your vote now:

www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/AllStarVote

Roy Carter - North Carolina District 5

Cast your vote for the DFA 2008 Grassroots All-Star now

Roy's campaign is off and running, building incredible support in a formally "written-off" district. Roy has an uphill battle in this district that voted 67% for President Bush in 2000 and 2004. Incumbent Republican Virginia Foxx can't wait to help President Bush at every turn, repeatedly voting for the worst her party has to offer.

Roy is working to win and you can offer the boost he'll need to make this race competitive. Read more about his campaign or cast your vote now:

The Real McCain

Published: Jan 9, 2008 11:13 AM

Two months ago, John McCain’s presidential campaign looked dead in the water to most. But his New Hampshire primary victory propels him back into the top tier of the Republican field.

Senator McCain has regularly been given a pass by the media on his penchant for flip-flopping position to show loyal support for President Bush.

Last January, we partnered with our friends at Brave New Films to be the first to distribute the Real John McCain, a two minute fifty second video that shows us McCain in his own words. It’s McCain vs. McCain.

McCain's "straight talk" is really just double talk.

Watch it for yourself:

We'll be sharing the truth about the Republican nominee this year, whether the media will or not. The contrasts between candidates who fight for progressive values and those who fight for the republican agenda are clear.

America wants a new direction. In 2008, progressive values will beat the Republicans every single time.

You did it! Progressives Unite in Iowa.

Published: Jan 4, 2008 10:01 AM

You did it!

The DFA Unite for a Progressive President Campaign was a huge success and helped propel Senators Obama and Edwards to first and second place victories in Iowa.

A year ago, the pundits and beltway Democrats said this race was a forgone conclusion. Over the last two months, you made it a dead heat on the ground in Iowa.

Tonight: Progressives Won!

The nomination is far from over. New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina are coming up fast. And, Super Tuesday could decide the nomination.

With your help, we will continue to make history. You did it in Iowa. Let's do it again across the nation. Contribute $15 right now and support our campaign for a progressive president.

https://contribute.democracyforamerica.com/unitevictory

Four years ago, most of the candidates would not even consider bringing our troops home from Iraq. Now every candidate has a plan to end the war.

We haven't had a national discussion about Health Care since the Clinton plan failed in 1993. Now, every candidate has a health care plan.

This year, global warming went mainstream and every candidate has a plan to fight climate crisis.

This is not 2000. This is not 2004.

This year, progressive values have taken center stage because of you. With the DFA presidential Primary petitions, you demanded the candidates take strong positions. They responded directly to DFA in videos and 'Vote for Me' email messages. They took your issues and made it the core of their campaigns.

In 2008, progressive values will beat the Republicans every single time. We are leading the party and moving America forward. And, we're doing it together.

With the Iowa caucus on Thursday and the New Hampshire primary only a few days later, there's no better time to find out how the DFA Unite for a Progressive President campaign is working on the ground in Iowa.

Please join me for a nationwide conference call Wednesday night, January 2, starting at 8pm central time.

Unite for a Progressive President

Published: Dec 3, 2007 2:20 PM

We have one month left before the first votes are cast.

Right now, the polls show a dead heat in Iowa between Senators Clinton, Edwards, and Obama.

This is our time to impact the Democratic nomination. DFA members excel at taking close races over the top. We will lead the way in calling on Iowans to Unite for a Progressive President.

Sign the nationwide call to action right now:

www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/Unite

The Iowa caucus isn't a typical election. There are no secret ballots. People state their candidate preferences and then are given multiple chances to switch based on the viability of their chosen candidate and conversations that occur in the caucus room. This allows for the unique opportunity for Iowa voters to Unite for a Progressive President before the end of the night rather then split the progressive vote between one or more candidates.

Last month over 154,000 of you voted in the largest primary poll of 2008. The poll made clear two striking facts: A 78% consensus for the top three progressive candidates of Edwards, Kucinich, and Obama¹. And 95% of DFA members voted for someone other than the media's frontrunner.

The message is clear. Unite for a Progressive President who will embrace grassroots engagement, not the beltway establishment. Unite for a Progressive President with the backbone to fight for change, not the same poll driven status quo.

Unite for a Progressive President who proudly stands with the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.

Let's show Iowa Democrats that tens of thousands of progressives are ready to follow their lead:

Feinstein: Three Strikes You're Out

Published: Nov 14, 2007 3:21 PM

My name is Chris Finnie and I've been a California DFA member since the Dean campaign. I need your help on an urgent Senate vote.

In California, we have a law -- commonly called the three-strikes law. And, like all laws, I think it ought to apply to everybody -- including my Senator, Diane Feinstein.

Too many times Senator Feinstein has failed to represent the people of California. Now she has announced that this Thursday she will support President Bush for the third time in two months. And it all comes down to Senator Feinstein's role on the Judiciary Committee.

Strike One: A Bush nominee for the federal bench, Leslie Southwick has a long history of rulings in lower courts that violate equality laws. Feinstein cast a deciding vote to give him a lifetime seat.

Strike Two: Michael Mukasey, nominated for Attorney General, refused to say he would oppose torture. But Feinstein voted to send his confirmation to the Senate floor anyway.

Now she's poised for her third bad vote in a row, on a rework of the FISA Act -- the law that's supposed to protect us all against illegal wiretapping.

When the Bush administration didn't want to follow this law, they asked major telephone companies like AT&T and Verizon to help. Several phone companies broke the law to help Dick Cheney read our emails and listen to our phone calls.

They knew it was illegal. But they didn't expect to get caught.

Now that they did, the Bush administration is trying to protect AT&T and others from lawsuits by granting retroactive immunity for breaking the law. The Senate Judiciary Committee can kill this bill if all ten Democrats vote against it.

Strike Three: Senator Feinstein is the only Democrat who says she'll vote for it.

Please call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid right now and demand he remove Senator Feinstein from the committee and replace her with a Democrat who will stand up to President Bush's abuse of power.

The Results Are In

Published: Nov 6, 2007 11:10 PM

The results are in. I want to thank you for sending a loud and clear message to the business-as-usual Washington pundits. You have made it clear that the Democratic Presidential Primary is far more competitive than beltway insiders would have you believe.

With over 150,000 votes cast, the DFA Pulse Poll is the largest internet poll to date in the 2008 primary.

The political pundits and beltway Democrats have been claiming that the primaries are already over, but 95% of the votes cast prove they are wrong.

Progressive activists want clear positions on Iraq and Iran. They're concerned with the power of special interest money in elections, and they want straight talk on issues such as funding social security and presidential power. DFA members want a Presidential candidate who will fight for progressive values and are looking for the candidates who are committed to changing the way politics is conducted in America.

Take a look for yourself. Check out the interactive results now:
http://DemocracyforAmerica.com/pulsepoll/results

We've heard from many of the candidates directly over the last three weeks.

Senator Barack Obama challenged DFA members to take the country forward in a new direction. Senator John Edwards demanded that as a DFA member himself, it is our time to take action together.

Governor Bill Richardson stood up for our brave men and women fighting for our country and pledged to bring every single troop home starting his first day in office. Senator Chris Dodd demanded we stop the Bush administration's abuse of power now and not wait for elections in 2008.

But no one worked harder to win your support then Congressman Dennis Kucinich. He made his progressive record on Iraq, universal health care, and the patriot act clear. He didn't just ask for your vote, he worked for the votes of your friends and neighbors. He asked his supporters to join DFA and vote to make sure you heard his message. He shot videos, issued press releases, and met with local DFA leaders and members all over the country to try and get your vote. And it worked.

Congressman Kucinich did not get the 66% required to earn the DFA Presidential Endorsement, but he did win our internet poll with an astounding 49,000 votes. Congratulations to Congressman Kucinich for working to win.

Will Congress Stand with President Bush?

Published: Oct 16, 2007 11:51 AM

It's up to you.

This is a very important week in the fight for Health Care for America and you can swing the vote.

President Bush vetoed an expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) that would have expanded coverage to millions of America's uninsured children.

Congress can override the veto, but not without your help.

Thirty-five members of Congress have been identified as potential swing votes to override the veto. Your representative is not one of them. But thousands of DFA members live in each swing district and we need your help to encourage them into action today.

Will you call a fellow DFA member in a swing district now?
http://www.DemocracyforAmerica.com/DFA2DFA

If we work together and take just a few minutes today to call DFA members in these swing districts and encourage them to take action, we can generate enough pressure to swing the vote. Hundreds of calls to these targeted leaders will make the difference for millions of American children.

Primaries Matter! Support Mark Pera against a Bush Democrat with $15 today.

With Democrats like Congressman Dan Lipinski, the Republicans don't even need to run a candidate.

There are some Democrats - Bush Democrats - who claim to represent us, but vote with Republicans on too many issues that matter.

Send a message to Congress: You're on notice. Regardless of political party, when Congress won't represent the will of the American people, then DFA members will fight to replace them with someone who will.

This is one bright blue Democratic district where we can make a change; Mark Pera is the progressive in the primary. Support Mark with a contribution of $15 right now:

Congressman Lipinski is out of touch with his district. He can't stop himself from voting with the Bush party line to prevent life-saving stem cell research or give oil companies even higher profits. He's even voted five times to keep funding Bush's war and supports keeping troops in Iraq beyond 2010.

But this election isn't just about bad votes; it's about leadership and community. Hand-picked by the party machine to take his father's seat in Congress, Dan

Kick a Bush Democrat out of office, Support Donna Edwards for Congress with $15 right now!

If it were up to Beltway Democrats, there wouldn't be primaries. When it comes to democratic incumbents, they want us to sit-down, shut-up, and support the status quo.  I'm not a Beltway Democrat and neither are you.

We know primaries matter.

Today, we can play a pivotal role in the fight to make Congress progressive. Support Donna Edwards for Congress with a $15 contribution right now:

We know where Donna Edwards stands. She is the consistent progressive in the race we can count on to fight for our values everyday, not just during election season. Yet, her opponent Al Wynn has been on the run, flipping positions and double-talking his record since the campaign started.

While Donna has stood up against the war in Iraq since the beginning, Congressman Wynn voted with Bush on Iraq from day one.  In fact, Al Wynn voted for the Republican bankruptcy bill, Dick Cheney's energy bill, and to increase x
