A little about me
I've long worked in housing, poverty and bike/ped issues. I'm sucking the marrow out of the recession: I was laid off last year, am losing my house and have no health care. And I'm pissed off and doing something about it.
I would describe myself as a
offline activitst
Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship
I know everyone in town, and I can get them to do stuff like rally and write letters. I started and run Drinking Liberally and the Idaho Sanity Alliance, one a sanctuary and one a voice for progressive causes in this ultra-conservative state.
I manage these blogs
Non-Recourse LifeDrinking Liberally Boise
The blogs I use most are
Eye on Boise (from the Spokesman-Review)Wonkette
What first inspired me to get involved
Nobody else was doing it! There's a serious shortage of non-predatory pro-consumer information on short sales and health care. I wanted to show the human side of the recession, so I started blogging about my experiences with losing my job, house and health care.
How I've gotten others involved
I got more than 500 people to turn out for the Idaho Rally To Restore Sanity.
The blog post I am most proud of
http://livingliberally.org/drinking/chapter_blog/Helpful-solutions-personal-problems-Republican-style
Why I think participation in the blogosphere is important
So many people are stuck at their computers all day. Blogs give them a beacon of hope in a dreary work life.
More about my involvement with DFA and local work
I managed a political campaign last year (and yes, he won). I run our local Drinking Liberally chapter. Besides...well, drinking liberally, we're the ones who watchdog the local tea party. We want the local media to know that not everyone in Idaho is a right-winger. For my day job, I'm the director of a statewide bike/ped nonprofit. We try to make Idaho friendlier to cyclists and pedestrians.
More about my volunteer work
Besides running two successful state senate campaigns, I also volunteer gobs. Heck, it's a fun way to meet people and do good at the same time.
My Twitter manifesto on online activism
See the crowds at the capitol! Check out the volunteers! When poop hits fans, we're there.
My suggested bumper sticker slogan
I'd Rather Be Riding a Bike
My idea for a cool new online action
Live-blog rallies (or counter-rallies) with photos. Show the interweb-viewing public how much fun it is to protest--as it happens. Allow them to suggest new rally signs in real time.
