A little about me
My name is Kevin, I am a student at the community college in Lane County, Oregon. I moved here in Lane County last August, and among the first people I met were Democracy For America alumni, Matt Keating and Laura Gillpatrick running a grassroots campaign for Pat-Riggs Henson. I was knocking on doors the next day, and haven't looked back since. In January, I was elected president of the Lane Student Democrats, and in three short months we have organized canvasses for progressive candidates, thrown fundraisers, delivered petitions for Democracy For America, and helped organize the Eugene Solidarity Rally where over 800 people came out in support of workers rights. The Lane Student Democrats can be seen in action with our labor friends http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFLtHhS3o9w There is no limit to the power of the people, and I am living in the energy of the movement.
I would describe myself as a

Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship
I think I deserve a Netroots nation scholarship because I am dedicated myself to a cause bigger than myself. Community organizing has become my business, pleasure, and life style. When the president calls for new leaders, I am here, I am ready, I am waiting. The Netroots Nation Conference will give me the necessary professional training I need, and a priceless opportunity to develop skills and best practices that I can bring back to my community. Netroots Nation will give me a national perspective on local issues that matter to each American, this perspective will make me a better organizer, and a better citizen. If given this opportunity, I will make the most out of it, and won't let you down. I have have worked on voter registration, local candidate elections in the state house, and county commissions, and am currently a volunteer organizer with Democracy for America. We must be pro-active to achieve victory, for the sky is limit for what we can accomplish if we stand together.
What first inspired me to get involved
I went to a Student Government training and sat down at the table with Former Secretary of State (OR) Bill Bradbury, I had no Idea who he was. Bill told me that young people who became empowered can change the world. After the training I worked on voter registration at my school and registered over 400 people to vote.
How I've gotten others involved
I habitually walk up to others and ask them if they would like to be involved. I do this on campus, downtown, and in my neighborhood. It works, and its easy.
Why I think participation in the blogosphere is important
I participate in the Blogosphere by reading, it sparks new ideas for me, and lets me know the best practices and news from around the nation.
More about my involvement with DFA and local work
I am an active DFA member. I have organized two petition deliveries in the past two months and worked with DFA to organize the Eugene Solidarity Rally and March.
More about my volunteer work
I am involved with the Lane Student Democrats, the college democrat chapter at Lane Community College. We organize canvasses and phonebanks, house parties etc... for Pete Sorenson, SEIU, AFSME, Portlanders for Schools...
My Twitter manifesto on online activism
Mass instant communication empowers us to organize quickly and effectively.
My suggested bumper sticker slogan
We need to fund education the highest ammount, to attact the best educators in the world to teach our children.
My idea for a cool new online action
In every single state stage one massive canvass will every group for one, strong, united message. We could knock 50 million doors in one day. Think about it.
