Name: Kathleen
Location: Athens, OH

My personal volunteering highlight:

Before the invasion of Iraq I gathered thousands of signatures in the Athens Ohio region from citizens who were completely opposed to the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq. This petition had a strong effect on our then Congressman Strickland's vote against the 2002 war resolution

Organized buses going to anti invasion march in the fall of 2002. We had 120 people on the two buses who ranged from the ages of 2-82.

Hundreds of hours for Governor Strickland, Senator Sherrod Brown, Congressman Space, Paul Hackett(who dropped out of the Senate race) Also many hours for our new progressive mayor in Athens Ohio Paul Wiehl

Raised money for Move On.

Volunteered at the Democratic Convention in Denver Colorado in August. for over a week. Along with working in Obama;s offices in Denver and Boulder

More recently I spent hours in the Glouster, Trimble, Chauncey Ohio region volunteering for Congressman Zack Space. I know I persuaded many of the families in these areas to vote for Congressman Space.

Volunteered hundreds of hours for President Obama in southeastern Ohio. over the fall of 2008.

Was able to attend the Inauguration. Had received 8 tickets from Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio (who I had volunteered for). Really proud to say that I gave four of those tickets to four homeless people I had become familiar with during my 10 days in D.C. Made sure they were able to get through the gates and attend the event

More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:

Appalachian Peace and Justice Network, Social justice issues in our region. Access to high speed internet, conflict resolution, fund raisers etc

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

will be working on Congressman Space's campaign coming up in 2010

What motivates me:

My awareness and belief that every single person deserves a fair shot at health care, a solid access to a quality education and a living wage. I have a deep commitment to this belief

How I try to motivate others:

By my actions and efforts to recruit for different candidates. In fact I have been in charge of recruitment of volunteers for numerous candidates

Where I see myself in five years:

continuing to do what I can to motivate others to be involved with social and political issues through direct action. Hope to be making sure that our seniors are getting the care that they have paid for and so deserve.

holding our Representatives feet to the fire

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

Health Care A Basic Right ... OR ..Your Family Deserves Health Care So Does Your Neighbors

Blogging

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

The internet, blogs and political action groups on line have provided a new and powerful tool to take our responsibility to be vigilant to new heights. Let me count a few of the ways that this new activist world is changing the world and the way we get our information so that we can be better citizens.... Fact checking, deep research, opinions based on facts, petitions, encouragement to contact Reps, watching Congressional hearings with others who are involved, raising money for specific candidates.

One of founder folks Thomas Jefferson stated that
"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance" These new internet tools have taken our responsibility and capability to be "vigilant" to new heights that need to be used everyday!

A Little Bit About Kathleen

57 year old mother of three, social justice activist, landlord, retired P.E. teacher, gardener. The most important thing I have ever done in my life is to have raised three intelligent compassionate and beautiful daughters. By far the most important thing. I raised my three daughter both economically, physically and morally on my own due to my ex's struggle with addictions.
After family, comes my commitment to my local community and then the bigger picture which includes how my life and my government effects others on this planet. During the eight years of the Bush administration we know that the negative effects of our country on others was felt around the world. My commitment to making sure that we witnessed accountability in regard to the 2000 selection of our President, the invasion of Iraq based on a "pack of lies" and the subsequent and unnecessary death and destruction became my political focus. I have been obsessed with the desire to witness justice on these very critical issues.

This activism came alive during the mid 60.'s with civil rights issues, South African Apartheid , Vietnam War, then continued with deep concerns about what was going on in Central America (Guatemala, Nicaragua) and continues with issues today.

I have been deeply involved with elections since Eugene McCarthy in 68.

I have a deep spiritual and political belief and recently President Obama expressed it better than I can

"All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort – a sustained effort – to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.that we are herePresident Obama recently said "

He basically expressed my belief system in those words

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

First off it is difficult for me as it is for most people to ask for any financial support for anything I choose to do. I was raised in a blue collar family where the message was truly "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" and that is what I have always done in any circumstance I have been in. Fortunately I have always had boot straps to pull on and realize that there are many who do not and for that I know I must always count those blessing and do everything in my power for the less fortunate.

But as I help my youngest daughter through college as a single parent tend to two aging parents dealing with our insane health care system, continue to be obsessed with social and political justice issues the income that I make just will not stretch enough to include the Netroots gathering.

I know there are so many who deserve to attend and find themselves in difficult situations. But I do hope I get your vote. Be well, count your blessings, and let's all continue to do our parts whether we get to the Netroots gathering or not.
