Scholarship Application Public Information
Katie B
| Name: | Katie B |
| Location: | Chicago, IL |
My personal volunteering highlight:
After applying for and receiving a $12,000 grant from MiracleGro, I organized and built Chicago's first registered community garden in a city park. This garden will be used to grow organic food for the neighborhood, give kids an opportunity to learn about sustainable argriculture hands-on, and overall add a little 'green' to our city. I am planning training sessions that will teach others how they can do the same thing in their Chicago neighborhoods.
What motivates me:
My community keeps me active. I believe the key to a strong democracy is strong communities.
How I try to motivate others:
I hope to motivate those around me by creating opportunities to invest in our community, their health, and the environment.
Where I see myself in five years:
In the next five years I will be formulating and implementing structural plans for the building of new community gardens in Chicago, mostly in public city parks. It is my personal goal to seek out and teach other people in Chicago how to attain their own garden space to grow food. The city will provide registered park gardens, and these resources will create an opportunity for more people to grow their own food.

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...
Online media is the fastest way to reach your audience. It is also the fastest way to broaden your loyal readers. The benefits of this media begin with its inherent approachability: no pamphlets, no clip-boards, just a foot and a half of space between the reader and the screen. This tool can be used by anyone, including hate groups. The internet has become an indispensable tool for progressive activists to not just promote freedom, opportunity, access, but to counter those who try to restrict them.
A Little Bit About Katie B
As an activist who considers myself equally dedicated to human rights and environmental issues, I am active with local projects that integrate sound environmental practices with community development. I especially enjoy advocating for increased access to usable green space in Chicago's urban neighborhoods. As a writer for the community blog Imagine2050.net I focus on environmental, food justice, and worker's rights issues. Imagine 2050 is a project sponsored by the civil rights organization, Center for New Community, that seeks to promote positive discussions around race, immigration, and American identity. I began blogging eight months ago in between my day job managing a locally-owned coffee shop. This summer I am working with Center for New Community as a social media intern. When I'm not working, I write, grow organic vegetables, ride my bike as fast as I can, and attempt to make the world's best lattes.
Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend
This scholarship would help me further develop as a blogger and connect with other activists who are working progressively on environmental issues. I dedicate most of my free time to improving my community and writing about the major issues facing Americans today; race, immigration, economy, etc. I believe the work of my fellow bloggers is an imperative message about multiculturalism and tolerance. Attending Netroots Nation will help me have a greater impact in Chicago and also nationally through my writing.
