My personal volunteering highlight:
This past fall leading up to the election, I organized a bunch of DC-area friends to go canvassing for the Obama campaign and other Democratic candidates in Prince William County, VA every weekend. This county was considered a key nationwide bellwether territory, one that had gone Republican for something like 10 straight elections but had also seen large demographic changes in recent years. Partly due to the efforts of my friends and I, Prince William County went for Obama by an astounding double-digit margin.
More about my volunteering with DFA:
I have hosted a couple of DFA parties and attended local chapter meetings both in DC and in Boston. I am currently in active contact with the head of DC4D to coordinate efforts with my Carrots & Sticks group.
More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:
Other than Carrots & Sticks, I have participated in actions for MoveOn, Organizing for America, and a number of smaller issue-focused organizations.
More about my work on current campaigns and issues:
In addition to the climate action initiative, I am leading a separate Carrots & Sticks effort to support a piece of sustainable transportation policy called Complete Streets. I have coordinated with leading advocates of the Complete Streets coalition and am currently working to identify key targets that we can potentially influence.
What motivates me:
Quite simply, I believe strongly in Gandhi's old quote "we must become the change we seek in the world". And I am ultimately driven by a desire to leave a better world for my future children than the one I was born into.
How I try to motivate others:
Mostly by pinpointing people that are politically engaged but shy to speak up for themselves, talking to them personally and explaining why their voice matters.
Where I see myself in five years:
I hope to be running a nonprofit organization with the goal of advancing progressive policy in the best way I see fit, perhaps something along the lines of my current project with Carrots & Sticks.
My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:
The Public Option: People Before Profits

I read these blogs often:
Daily Kos
Yglesias
Participation in the blogosphere is important because...
Blogging is the 21st century version of the political pamphlet. It is the only truly (small-d) democratic medium for democratic deliberation. I believe it is no coincidence that the resurgence of the center-left has occurred at the same time as the rise in blogging as a predominant means of disseminating political information. I read blogs religiously because I find them a more valuable information source than any other, and try to participate as much as my busy schedule allows when I have something noteworthy to add to the conversation.
A Little Bit About Jeremy Koulish
I wear many hats in my efforts to realize meaningful progressive change in America: think tank policy analyst, public policy graduate student, grassroots activist, blogger and political strategist. Most relevant to both NN09 and DFA, after the 2008 election I formed and now lead a group of local activists called Carrots & Sticks. We’re best described as an "Action Tank", employing our policy expertise and access from living inside the Beltway to help bridge the gap between the insulated policymaking elite and ordinary citizens. We work on a wide variety of issues, but our recent focus has been on the economic justice aspect of climate change policy. Other campaigns we are ramping up involve health care, sustainable transportation policy and DC sovereignty. You can find us on the web at http://carrotsandsticks.org/.
Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend
I have led multiple trips to Capitol Hill and met with high-level staffers, and it's much easier than you'd think to be able to do so. I would like to teach other interested folks how to effectively play the insider game as an outsider, and develop relationships with fellow activists around the country who would like to join the Carrots & Sticks effort. As well, I had a highly positive experience at NN08 and learned a lot of valuable information that I was able to use in my activist activities over the past year.
I unfortunately will most likely be out of work at the time of the conference this August, so may not be able to afford the cost of attendance without a scholarship. Please consider me for this invaluable opportunity!
