Name: mariemom
Location: San Carlos, CA

My personal volunteering highlight:

I started a grassroots program called "San CarLess Days" which encourages the children to walk, bike, scooter or carpool to school on given days. This program combats childhood obesity and global warming. I work with our City government to make our routes safer for children who walk and bike to school. I care about global warming and childhood obesity. I fight for less pollution and healthier children. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXfDuoRHe-g
Please see youtube clip regarding kick of of San CarLess Days. This was my brainchild in San Carlos, CA.

More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:

I have volunteered on the Obama campaign and Moveon. org campaign by phone calling, attending meetings, and participating in bake sales to raise money and support our newly elected president.

More about my work on current campaigns and issues:

I will be helping on April Vargas' campaign for San Mateo County Supervisor here in Northern California. We will meet for coffee in a couple of weeks. She approached me for help after witnessing my continued work in our community.

What motivates me:

I am motivated by my children and other children. I want them to have an excellent education. I want them to embrace all people and all cultures. I want them to breath clean air and drink clean water. I want them to help the very poor. I want them to have great health and great healthcare. I want them to be very proud of America. I want them to be happy.

How I try to motivate others:

By being active myself.

Where I see myself in five years:

In 5 years I want to be know as someone who cared enough for education, children's health and global warming that I did something about it.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:

No more "Services Denied"! Support a public option!

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

These are difficult times and we need to act. It's very important to make our viewpoints known. With thoughtful reasoning and proper presentation we can persuade many.

I am not an active blogger... but I believe I could be a very good one. I've been told I have a knack for getting certain points across.

A Little Bit About mariemom

I am a mother of two daughters, Emilee 9 years and Hannah 7 years old. I've been married for 10 years to a wonderful husband, Tim Camenzind. He is Swiss, but raised in America. He is an Engineer in Silicon Valley. I am part Hispanic, Native American, Spanish and French decent.

I am a Radiation Therapist and work in Oncology. I treat cancer patients at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA. I lost my mother to cancer 17 years ago.

I come from a very large family. I have 5 brothers and 3 sisters. I was raised in Niwot, Colorado.

I currently live in San Carlos, CA and I am very involved in our community and the schools.

Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend

Because I have a huge desire to get more involved in Liberal politics. I believe my passion, stance and experience can bring much to the table. My background has shaped me. My mother and father endured much discrimination as Hispanics/Native Americans in a Republican dominated Colorado. My father served in the Army and earned a Purple Heart. My mother was a wonderful woman who died early (50 years) from cancer. They nearly lost their home to pay the medical bills.

My hours at work have been cut to nearly nothing due to the economic downturn. I remain busy by staying involved with Liberal Politics and raising my children.

I have strong beliefs on preserving and conserving our environment... this may come from my Native American heritage... I must admit, they were the first environmentalist.

I have strong views toward making Health Care affordable. I have witnessed too many times in my work that some who are not insured and cannot afford treatment can face disastrous consequences such as mortality and loss of home.

I have strong views for woman's rights. Right to choose, right for equal pay, and the right to hold high management and political positions.

Last, but certainly not least, I am deeply concerned about how the immigrants are being treated. It confuses me when I hear talk of "go home Mexican". This land use to belong to them. We need to have some compassion. The immigrants who have been here a long time and who obey the law, deserve Amnesty.
