My personal volunteering highlight:
Certainly the most visible and oddest contribution was a graphic / photo shop of a radio commentator made baby sized into the arms of Sarah Palin. The "Baby Burke" graphic was condemned by Palin and created a brief firestorm of often phony outrage.
My best public speaking performance occurred in front of a city counsel hearing on the funding of a minor league stadium in our neighborhood. I took the day off work, rose to the occasion and eloquently stated my case. It didn't win the day, but I won the respect of members of the community, which I cherish.
I organized an anti-graffiti campaign that has permanently solved the problem in our neighborhood. Shop keepers now paint over new Graffiti, and its been clean for 15 years now.
I seldom have to paint over new 'tags.'
I help manage a community garden. Its not big, but its been going on for over 9 years.
More about my volunteering with progressive organizations:
I primarily get advice from others on blogs I frequent. The issue of how one can network learn and share resources, is my primary interest, and the reason I'm attending this August.
More about my work on current campaigns and issues:
Other than dollar contributions, the last candidate I supported was my wife, for US congress, and getting her on the ballott on a 3rd party ticket.
From this and other experiences, I have a proposal for voting/ballott reform that will improve reliability confidence accountability, and is fair to 3rd party candidates.
What motivates me:
Issues. Issues motivate me. Like others I get involved when the issue is important and I have a sense that my effort might just help. Believing you're empowered, with a reasonable plan for improvement is key.
How I try to motivate others:
I keep up with the community garden, and continually invite others to come over. I talk politics pull weeds and discuss their interests. I tell stories of success.
Where I see myself in five years:
I'd like to have a website that helps others get started, be effective, network and share their knowledge and experience.
My suggested bumper sticker slogan for the Stand with Dr. Dean campaign:
Health or Profit. Choose. (Public Health Insurance Logo)

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...
I contribute comments research and graphics to newspaper blogs, and other blogs to help raise the level of discussion, and provide information. (Comments )
I recently pointed out a case of Libel against Shannyn Moore (Alaska) by the ADN, and contributed a series of graphics to Alaskan Bloggers about Sarah Palin.
Including "Gulliver Palin's nightmare - getting attacked by Little People"
One series donated to http://divasblueoasis.com/ a small thing in itself was widely discussed criticized and mentioned by Sarah Palin herself.
Participation can be hard work, it can be a light off handed humorous remark, or some other small thing in itself. However, One never knows how it will affect others.
The key seems to be persistence, earnestness and clarity of thought. That seems to be a powerful combination when contributing to a discussion.
A Little Bit About DrChill
I have over 20 years experience in the not-for-profit sector providing services in the health care industry to low income families. I became involved in local politics when I bought a house. I've organized graffiti cleanups, managed our local community garden, organized a protest against improper development, and ill conceived targeting of neighborhoods by city planners.
I've been in the board of a local civic association and one of its vocal critics.
I've been blogging about our neighborhood for about 8 years.
Why I Deserve a Scholarship to Attend
I aspire to create an INTERNET resource that facilitates community action, ranging from the simple start up of a single public act, to an ongoing project, to networking nationally to affect political change. If successful, my efforts will amplify the work and aspirations of others nation wide and perhaps globally as well.
A scholarship will help me afford & attend and learn how best to serve organize and catalyze the progressive community.
