A little about me

I've been a computer programmer for 38 years, and am a pioneer in webmastering. I started doing database-driven sites and and content-managed sites when these were both new ideas.

Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship

My most recent project, thecanadian.org, is a major effort. The intention is to be the British Columbia equivalent of Huffington Post. One of the site owners is a documentary film maker, so there is a lot of video content.
I've developed a lot of expertise in adapting Joomla/K2 for sites of this nature, making it possible to do this sort of site for a low cost. I've already made some of this expertise availalble to others; see "A Joomla K2 component" at http://broughton.ca/
I am a US citizen, and still pay a lot of attention to what goes on there. My own blog, http://broughton.ca/blog , occasionally addresses US issues.
I'm VERY interested in seeing Sen. Al Franken. See http://broughton.ca/bob-broughtons-blog-mainmenu-26/128-al-franken

Why I got involved

I've been involved in politics since I was a teenager in the 1960's. I was a candidate for the British Columbia Legislative Assembly in 2001 and 2005. I started a blog for the 2005 campaign, and continued it after the election was over.

How I've gotten others involved

Rafe Mair was a Minister of the Environment for British Columbia in the late 1970's, later became British Columbia's most prominent radio talk show host. He's also a technophobe. He had a site set up for him 10 years ago that was moribund, and I converted it into a functioning blog with a good audience.

My best diary

Participation in the blogosphere is important because...

1. Bloggers like to get feedback. It encourages them to stick with it.
2. It's great to put some effort into a posting, and have it go viral.

More about my work with DFA

I'm an active member of Democrats Abroad, and I did telephoning for Darcy Burner during the 2008 campaign. (When you use Skype for telephoning, the recipient can't tell it's from area code 604.)

More about my volunteer work

I expect to be involved in some way in the 2010 election campaign. At the very least, I'll do more telephoning.

My Twitter manifesto on why online activism work

We certainly know a lot more about the outrages of Republicans and Fox News than we would if those "slactivists" weren't around.

My Twitter pitch on why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship

I'm a guy who knows how to make things happen on the internet; how to convert good intentions into reality.

My suggested bumper sticker slogan for Primaries Matter

Let's nominate candidates that answer to you, not the lobbyists.

My idea for a cool new online action

Soliciting contributions to help me buy up Canwest Global; see http://broughton.ca/bob-broughtons-blog-mainmenu-26/140-canwest-global-buyout
Never got a contribution.
