A QUICK UPDATE
The Stand with Dr. Dean campaign started off with a goal of collecting 250,000 petition signatures in support of a public option. So far, nearly 400,000 people have signed on. DFA Members have written over 35,000 letters and made over 16,000 calls to Congress. In June, over 12,000 DFA Members in all 50 states delivered the Stand with Dr. Dean petitions to their Congresspersons' local office.
Polls show that over three-quarters of the American people -- and even half of Republicans -- support the public option.

HOW TO COLLECT PLEDGES
- Find small businesses in your community to talk to about the public option
- Set a time to go and talk to those small business leaders and have a conversation about the healthcare public option
- Bring your materials along -— a pledge card, a Stand with Dr. Dean sign, and your FAQ sheet in case they ask questions
- Ask them to sign the pledge card and mail it back to us
Also, be sure to:
- Explain what the healthcare public option is -- you don't have to be an expert, but know a simple explanation
- Talk about why a public option would benefit small businesses
- Ask your leader to sign the pledge card
- If your leader signs on, offer a Stand with Dr. Dean placard to hang in the window or in the office, or a lapel sticker to stick on the register displaying support for healthcare with a public option
- Report your results at democracyforamerica.com/pledgedrive

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where should I start looking for small business leaders in my community?
Start with the people you already know -- friends, neighbors, or maybe you're a small business owner yourself!
What if I'm not sure if a small business provides healthcare to its workers??
If a small business doesn't already provide healthcare to its employees, then it's likely because of the cost. A public option would create competition and lower costs for everyone -- businesses and individuals.
What if a small business leader does not know what the public option is, or does not have time to talk about it?
Have your bullet points ready to talk about how a public healthcare option will benefit their business. If they don't have time to talk, ask if you can schedule a time to sit down or meet to talk more in depth.
What will we do once we've collected these pledges? Is it effective to have business leaders display the Dr. Dean Pledge cards in their windows?
Once you've garnered support from small business leaders, and they send their pledge cards in to us, we'll collect those signatures and compile a list of pledges in your area. When Congress returns to Washington in September, we'll deliver your pledges to their Washington offices.
