About the Petition
Dave Agema, a Republican leader from Michigan, has been almost going out of his way on Facebook and radio lately to showcase his own hatred and homophobia.
While "citing" research conducted by known white supremacist and Holocaust-denier Edward Fields - Agema stated numerous lies attacking the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. Since then he has continued to embarrass himself with failed attempts to backtrack his remarks - which has only resulted in even more offensive remarks suggesting LGBT people need rehabilitation.
We must not stand idly by and allow any major political party to support a leader who is clearly ignorant on the needs and rights of their constituents, and are blocking the LGBT's movements attempts to elevate our rights past second-class citizen status.
Here are a few of the "highlights" from Agema's Facebook and radio interview rants and alleged research he shared:
"We ought to be saying to these people, 'hey, we don’t agree with your lifestyle and we’ll help you get out of it, but we want you to know the facts of what’s going to happen to you if you stay in this lifestyle.'"
“part of the homosexual agenda is to get the public to affirm their filthy lifestyle”
“Because homosexuals can’t reproduce naturally, they resort to recruiting children. Homosexuals can be heard chanting ‘TEN PERCENT IS NOT ENOUGH, RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT’ in their homosexual parades.”
"Study after study after study talks about all the diseases you get, how it gets you into drugs, gets you into all these other things that you don’t want to be in. So if you really love someone, if you really were concerned about someone, if you saw your friend for example dying of alcoholism would you just stand quietly by and watch it happen? Or would you speak up and say hey I want to help you."
Equality Michigan encourages all individuals who value human rights and compassion over bigotry and hate need to stand up and let our politicians know that leaders who spew lies like these are not fit to serve. Enough is enough and it is time for Dave Agema to resign as a leader of the National and Michigan Republican Party, or be shown the exit door by the many Republicans already calling Agema out on his absurd statements.
