Jim Dean: The American People Deserve Better

Released: Oct 28, 2005 2:58 PM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA), issued the following statement in response to the indictment of I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Cheney's chief of staff:

"The indictment against Lewis Libby confirms what the American public has long feared -- that members of the Bush administration are willing to put politics before our national security, even if it means breaking the law to do so.

"But we can't get distracted by the minute details. This case is about how Americans were misled into the war in Iraq.

"We deserve better. It's time for the President to address the issue at hand and start restoring integrity to our political process. The American people have already suffered enough from the scandals and misconduct of this administration."

Paul Hackett Signs the Democracy for America Iraq War Pledge

Released: Oct 19, 2005 12:48 PM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Last week, Democracy for America (DFA) launched a national pledge drive asking its members to only support candidates who: 1) Acknowledge that the United States was misled into the war in Iraq; 2) Advocate for a responsible exit plan with a timeline; and 3) Support our troops both at home and abroad.

Today, Paul Hackett, Marine and former candidate for the United States Congress (OH-2) endorsed the pledge and called on Americans to join the campaign.

"As a Marine, I witnessed first-hand the devastation and destruction of this war," said Hackett. "The mistruths and deception of the Bush administration have created a quagmire. That's why I signed the pledge to only send responsible leaders to Washington. And I’m asking you to do the same."

Tens of thousands of Americans have already signed the pledge, including nearly 300 officeholders and candidates throughout the country.

"It's time for the leaders in Washington to stand up and face the facts," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "We must start planning a responsible exit plan and timeline for our brave servicemen and women, for their families and for all Americans. If the current leaders won't step up to the plate, then we'll make sure to only support candidates who will."
