Democracy for America Raises Nearly $80,000 for Special Election in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District

BURLINGTON, VT -- In only 48 hours, Democracy for America has raised nearly $80,000 in an e-mail solicitation for Paul Hackett's race for Ohio's 2nd Congressional District. The e-mail from DFA Chair Jim Dean was sent to Democracy for America supporters across the country.

"The overwhelming enthusiasm, support, and generosity that Democracy for America has shown my campaign is unbelievable and will help give us the momentum we need these in last remaining weeks," said Hackett. "I thank them for their support and dedication to changing this country."

"Paul is an outstanding candidate who will bring a fresh voice to the people of Ohio, as well as Washington," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "He is a man who will work for what's best for his constituents, not for corrupt special interests."

Jim Dean's Statement On Bush's Supreme Court Nomination

BURLINGTON, VT -- Tonight, Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America (DFA) released the following statement in regard to President Bush's nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the United States Supreme Court:

"The responsibility of the United States Supreme Court is to protect the rights of all Americans, regardless of partisanship. This is a lifetime appointment that will shape our rights for years to come and the Senate must not be a rubber stamp.

"We hope for the sake of all Americans that extensive, in-depth hearings will be held and that Judge Roberts will be candid and open about all of his views."

BURLINGTON, VT -- Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Paul Hackett for the United States Congress in the 2nd District of Ohio -- making him the newest member of the DFA-List, Candidates for America.

"Paul Hackett is dedicated to bringing fiscal responsibility and progressive values back to the people of Ohio," said Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America. "His record of leadership and experience both at home and abroad is exactly what Ohio needs, and what our nation's capital needs. We are proud to add him to the DFA-List."

Paul Hackett knows what's at stake for all Americans. As a retired major in the United States Marine Corp, he volunteered for duty in Iraq. An opponent of the war from the beginning, Paul answered the call to service because he knows that America needs leaders who don't shy from adversity. Now, he is running for Congress to promote small business growth, sustainable environmental policy and fiscal responsibility. If elected, he will be the first member of Congress to have served in the war in Iraq. The special election is August 2, 2005.

Democracy for America Raises Over $1.2 Million In First Half of 2005

BURLINGTON, VT -- In the first six months of 2005, Democracy for America (DFA) raised more than $1.2 million in federal funds. The average online contribution was $39 and nearly 2,500 supporters donated over $200.

Democracy for America continues to energize and mobilize grassroots activist across the country through coalition building, activist trainings, online support and candidate endorsements.
