Democracy for America Success Stories of 2005

Released: Nov 9, 2005 3:03 PM

BURLINGTON, VT -- Democracy for America (DFA) and progressives throughout the country have a reason to celebrate today. Many DFA endorsed ("DFA-List") and supported candidates won elections at all levels of office, all across America:

  • One of the two new Democratic governors was a DFA-List candidate -- Jon Corzine, who easily won the race for Governor of New Jersey.

  • Democrats Kevin Boyce, Mary Jo Hudson and Maryellen O'Shaughnessy won their races for city council in Columbus, Ohio.

  • Three DFA-List candidates won their mayoral race: Shirley Franklin was re-elected as mayor of Atlanta, GA., Jun Choi was elected as mayor of Edison Township in New Jersey, and R.T. Rybak was re-elected as mayor of Minneapolis, MN.

  • Democracy for America supported 99 candidates running for office in 2005 -- and over 50% of them won.

  • Democracy for America played a large role in the defeat of Governor Schwarzenegger's special election measures by organizing supporters to "Nix the First Six."

  • DFA also helped in the people's veto of Ballot Question One in Maine -- an initiative to repeal a new state law that extends the state's anti-discrimination laws to gays and lesbians.

"Last night, we sent a message to the nation that when Democrats and progressives compete everywhere, even the in reddest of districts, we can win," said Jim Dean, chair of Democracy for America. "Yesterday, we moved a step closer to taking our country back."
