Columbus City School Board
Amy Harkins has been involved in Columbus City Schools for the past 10 years as a parent, volunteer, and advocate. She served as the Secretary and Vice President of PACE, a parent advocacy and support organization for the district’s Gifted & Talented students, on her local PTA, and as a Reading Buddy, Junior Achievement instructor. Recently, she helped develop a career exploration program for middle schoolers. Amy saw the power of student and family voices firsthand when she helped to organize against proposed changes in gifted education programming in 2014. Parents and students wrote letters, spoke in front of the Board, attended community meetings, and successfully managed to get the program changes postponed and eventually reworked into a more favorable plan for families and students. She’s running for school board now because she believes in the power of ordinary people to make incredible change. As a child, Amy experienced periods of housing and financial insecurity and as a single mother, she knows what it means to struggle with balancing a full-time job, raising her son without local family support, and advocating for his educational needs. She knows what it means to have someone fighting for you, and she’s running for School Board now because she’s ready to fight for the students, families, and teachers of Columbus.
