Ben Chin is a progressive community organizer, father and lay preacher running for Mayor of Lewiston, Maine. As the former Political Director of the Maine People’s Alliance, Ben has led and won real victories for Lewiston families through people-powered organizing - from raising the minimum wage to creating a more equitable property tax fairness policy - and he’ll bring that same kind of accountability, vision, and courage to the Mayor’s office.

Ben came to Lewiston on a scholarship to Bates College in 2003; though he’d initially planned to go to seminary, quickly became involved in the community and put down roots. In 2005, he joined efforts to protect affordable housing units downtown. He went on to build advocacy campaigns and win on key progressive fights - to protect prescription drug coverage for seniors, to pass a property tax assistance plan via the homestead exemption and the property tax fairness credit, to raise the minimum wage, and to fund public schools.

Ben was honored to be named one of Lewiston’s “top 40 under 40” in 2016. He has served as a proud member of Lewiston’s Energy Efficiency Taskforce, on the board of Trinity Jubilee Center, the Vestry of Trinity Church, the Maine Fair Trade Campaign, and the Bates Alumni Council. He currently serves on the board of the Maine Center for Economic Policy. At the state level, he was an appointed member to the legislature’s taskforce reviewing independent contractor misclassification; in his role on the Bias Based Profiling Advisory Committee he helped produce an unanimous report alongside law enforcement and civil rights organizations outlining Maine’s plan to address racial profiling. He’s also the author of numerous policy and research papers, including the Maine Racial Justice Policy Guide, a guide to how legislation will impact communities of color; and a proposal for Universal Family Care to provide free in-home care for seniors and people with disabilities, as well as childcare for children three and under.

Ben lives in Lewiston with his wife, Nicola, and two kids, Anjali (two years old), and Rajan (born this year!) As a licensed lay preacher in the Episcopal Church, he preaches at and regularly attends Trinity Church.
