DFA backs Jimmy Gomez for Congress in California’s 34th run off election

Today, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed state legislator Jimmy Gomez in the special election in California's 34th Congressional District.  DFA has 278,352 members in California and more than one million members nationwide.

The national progressive group had endorsed human rights journalist and activist Wendy Carrillo in the first round of voting in the CA-34 special election.  However, with the race for Congress now between Gomez and former L.A. city planning commissioner Robert Lee Ahn, the choice was an easy one for DFA.

DFA Senior Electoral Campaign Manager Alejandro Chávez on the people-powered PAC's endorsement of Gomez:

“The people of California's 34th district deserve a Representative in Washington who knows how to push for bold, populist progressive reforms and work closely with the grassroots.  From the work he’s done as a community organizer across California to the battles he’s waged as state assemblyman to expand paid family leave, prevent domestic violence, and stand up for the undocumented, Jimmy Gomez has fought for progressive values and delivered real results for the communities he serves.  Jimmy Gomez is precisely the kind of populist progressive fighter we need in Congress and we could not be more excited to stand with him in this runoff election." -- Alejandro Chávez, Senior Electoral Campaign Manager, Democracy for America

Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez on receiving the DFA endorsement:

"It is an honor to have Democracy for America's support in this important race. DFA empowers the people and I am cut from the same cloth. Having been a political organizer for much of my career I share the belief that for a progressive agenda to be a reality, we must take our message directly to the people. We cannot let our message and our policies be products of a Washington, D.C.-based conversation, but rather local conversations with people who feel the impacts of policies in their communities and families. I look forward to working with DFA to challenge the status quo and take our message around the country in order to build our movement." -- Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez

Democracy for America is a member-driven, people-powered progressive PAC with more than one million members nationwide committed to taking on income inequality, money in politics, and structural racism.

Since its 2004 founding, DFA members have raised and contributed more than $40 million and made more than 11.1 million volunteer calls to help successfully elect 916 progressive candidates nationwide.
