DFA celebrates nine progressive victories in Berwyn
Today, Democracy for America (DFA) celebrated the victories of nine endorsed progressive candidates who won municipal elections in the Chicago suburb of Berwyn on Tuesday. The candidates ran as part of the larger Berwyn United slate, which had fourteen candidates total.
“On Tuesday, the people of Berwyn voted to inject fresh progressive voices into their city government. The newly elected leaders of the Berwyn United slate put together a bold, community-focused vision for their city that should stand as an example for other local, progressive leaders across the country. Returning accountability to government and resisting Trump’s hateful agenda starts at the municipal level, and, as the numerous victories of Berwyn United slate showed last night, is an essential recipe for local electoral success in 2017 and beyond.” - Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America
The nine winners and the positions they will assume are:
- Marge Clark, Clerk
- Cynthia Gutierrez, Treasurer
- Jose Ramirez, Ward 1 Alderman
- Jeanie Reardon, Ward 3 Alderman
- Bob Fejt, Ward 4 Alderman
- Edgar Garcia, Ward 8 Alderman
- Barbara Bossnay, Township Trustee
- Cynthia Hayes, Township Trustee
- Elizabeth Jiménez, Township Trustee
These were some of the first victories in a year in which DFA has committed to investing $500,000 to electing a crop of progressive leaders in municipal elections across the country. Upcoming elections of DFA-endorsed municipal candidates include the March 7 primary election for Mayor of St. Louis and the April 4 general election for Mayor of Bolingbrook, IL.
