Progressives Make Strong Gains in CA District Elections

Written by: Ralph I. Miller on Jan 16, 2007 1:15 AM EST

A debate is raging in California on the term “progressive” and who is or is not a progressive.

One undeniable fact is that progressive candidates for Delegate to the State Democratic Party Convention and to the California Democratic Party’s Executive Board, made strong showings in this past weekend’s Assembly District elections throughout California.  The gains ranged from 15% of the elected Delegates in some of the more rural districts, to nearly 100% in some of the urban ones.  As an example, in AD21 covering Silicon Valley, 5 of the 6 women and all of the men, plus the elected Executive Committee Representative, are a flavor of progressive, and all but one of these are members of a DFA-affiliated club (that person is prominent in a major environmental group).  Two years ago it was only 50% plus the E-Board Rep.

I believe this is a big triumph for the power of the grassroots, netroots, neighbors and fellow volunteers.
