12 DAYS TO VICTORYYou can make the difference!
We have less than 2 weeks to make Dave Loebsack the next Congressman from Iowa's 2nd Congressional District. He will be the first Democrat in 30 years to represent you in Washington.
We need your help to win this race. Please dig just a little deeper, and give whatever you can afford!
We need to flood the airwaves with the Dave Loebsack winning message. We are closer to winning here in the 2nd District than ever before. We want no regrets on November 7th.
Your contribution could be the one that puts us over the top!
Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party have kicked their "Get Out the Vote" campaigns into high gear. We have to make sure every one of those voters has seen a television commercial, received a phone call and had a volunteer knocking at their door. We have to make sure they all know Dave's name and our message.
We have a bunch of great events coming up in the next twelve days. Senator Tom Harkin will join us for an early voter rally at the IMU on Friday, October 27.
Get scared by Dave and Senator Joe Biden. On October 31, Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) will join Dave for breakfast in Cedar Rapids at the Hy-Vee on Wilson Ave at 8:15 AM and the Hy-Vee on Oakland Rd at 9:45 AM.

Please, hurry! There is only 1 day left for you to contribute to our campaign before the September 30th FEC filing deadline.
I am asking everyone to, please, dig just a little deeper and contribute whatever you can. Many voters are only now beginning to tune in and pay attention to the race. Your contribution will help launch our campaign into the pivotal month of October.

The Democratic Party is the party of fiscal responsibility, integrity, and the right priorities. We need to take back control of Congress and hold the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress accountable for their disastrous policies that have done so much harm to so many.
The Republican Congress has become mired in corruption, scandal, fiscal irresponsibility, the occupation of Iraq, and fear tactics. The only way we will have accountability, real checks and balances in Government is if the Democrats to take control of Congress.
This is the second most Democratic district in the country held by a Republican - WE MUST WIN. It's time to take America in a new direction - based on Democratic priorities and values. Please, click here to make your donation of $100, $50, $25 or whatever you can afford - to continue our fight.

Mike Carberry's Letter In CR Gazette
Linked to groups: DFA-Iowa 2nd District (DFIA-2D)
Tell me, where was Leach's integrity then?Jim Leach's campaign billboard reads, ''Integrity.''
Where was Leach's integrity when he voted for Medicare Part D in 2004? Not
part of Medicare, the partial drug prescription program is a private insurance
plan designed to profit the pharmaceutical industry.
Enrolled seniors must pay out of pocket for prescription drugs when they
reach the ''doughnut hole,'' the yearly gap in insurance coverage between
$2,251 and $5,100. By law, seniors are not permitted to purchase supplemental
insurance to cover the gap and Medicare is prevented from buying prescription
drugs at bulk rates.
Where was Leach's integrity when he voted to relax House ethics rules (HR 5)
after Tom DeLay was accused of ethics violations in 2005? Leach voted with
DeLay 83 percent of the time between Jan. 1, 2004, and March 31, 2005. Where
was Leach's integrity when he voted for the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and
the total repeal of the estate tax that would give our most wealthy Americans
an inheritance tax break? Leach consistently voted against Democratic efforts
to raise the minimum wage that would have improved the lives of hard working
Americans.
Leach voted twice in 2005 to weaken our constitutional rights, first, in
favor of blocking funds allocated to enforce a federal court ruling regarding
the display of the Ten Commandments at a county courthouse (HR 2862).
More than 200 years of constitutional history would be extinguished by
giving power to Congress over the courts rather than the federal judiciary.
Second, Leach voted to make the Patriot Act permanent, allowing the Bush
administration to eavesdrop and conduct secret searches of private citizens.
Restore real integrity to Congress by voting to send Dave Loebsack to
Washington on Nov. 7.

I have been talking with Iowans about our shared concerns and values as I tour the district on the "Walk with Dave... Be the Change" trek; concerns and values Tom Harkin fights for in the Senate. Make sure to check out http://walkwithdave.com and read about some of the people I have met along the way.
We are spreading our message of hope and opportunity throughout the 2nd District. Our campaign presents a clear alternative to the devastating policies of the Bush administration and the Republican-controlled Congress. We need affordable healthcare, good jobs and a living wage. We must re-engage with the world community to better protect Americans at home and abroad. But in order to achieve our vision for America, we need to elect a Democratic Congress - starting right here in the 2nd District of Iowa.
Sincerely,
Dave Loebsack

What Values Agenda?
With close to 100 days left until the election, Republicans and Jim Leach, are trying to divert attention from issues that matter, such as raising the minimum wage, healthcare and the war in Iraq. Leach supports a conservative Republican "American Values Agenda" that aims only to divide our country, not strengthen it.
The Republican values agenda is simply an attempt to trick the American public into forgetting the horrible record of the Bush Administration and the Republican Party. We have watched our education system crumble, our environment put at risk, civil rights eroded, good jobs lost to outsourcing, and a mistaken war launched in our name. It is time for change!
Let me tell you about my American values agenda. It's about bringing our troops home safely. It's about raising the minimum wage to a livable wage. It's about providing affordable and universal healthcare for all Americans. It's about energy policies that benefit the Midwest, not the Middle East. These are the issues we should be placing a priority on - not attempting to distract people from the real issues.
While Republicans and Jim Leach waste their time debating Internet Gambling, and stripping federal courts of their constitutional checks and balances duties (Pledge Protection Act) - a war rages in Iraq and in Lebanon, millions of people are without healthcare, and our minimum wage is at its lowest level in 50 years when adjusted for inflation. Leach has voted at least six times in the last year again raising the minimum wage. It is clear what the Republican values agenda really is: distraction and political tricks.

My LTE in yesterdays Cedar Rapids Gazette
Linked to groups: DFA-Iowa 2nd District (DFIA-2D)
Vote for Democrats to fix Medicare fiascoIn addition to Republican Jim Nussle, another champion of the calamity called Medicare Part D was Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa. The author of a recent letter published in The Gazette is correct about Americans who are left worse off under this private plan. Many seniors will reach the doughnut hole this summer. This is the point in the program that comes around every year when they are left high and dry until their drug expenses reach $5,100 after spending $2,850 of their own money. But, the plan only covers 95 percent from then on. Many low-income seniors who do not qualify for Medicaid simply cannot afford the high cost of prescription drugs and also put food on the table. Of course, the pharmaceutical companies are laughing all the way to the bank. It's enough to make you sick. The best way to cure this illness is to vote for Democratic candidates such as Dave Loebsack for Congress and Chet Culver for governor.

www.press-citizen.com/apps/pbcs....Leach wrong on Voting Rights Act
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is up for renewal. Recently the House Judiciary Committee passed the Act by a 33-1 vote. Then, during debate in the House, Republicans objected to some provisions of the Act, which required nine southern states that have had a history of discrimination against black voters to get Justice Department approval for their election laws. Debate on the Act stopped.
Prior to recent events, I wrote Rep. Jim Leach to urge him to vote to reinstate the Voting Rights Act. Leach's response was that he was "watching this." He said, "At this time no bill has been introduced to begin the re-authorization process and it is unclear what action if any will be taken in Congress."
Rather than taking a leadership role on passage of the Voting Rights Act, Leach was sitting back waiting for some other legislator to take the initiative. I was disappointed to say the least.
We need a change in priorities, new ideas and real leadership in Washington. Our choice this time around is David Loebsack, a professor of political science at Cornell College and a recognized expert on Iowan, national and international politics. Put a big red X on your calendar on Nov. 7. Go to the polls and vote. It's a matter of freedom and democracy.

Leach votes for the millionaires
Republican Rep. Jim Leach voted for near total repeal of the estate tax, also known as the death tax (HR 5638). In a public statement, Leach's office claimed that repeal will protect small business owners and farmers. That's a myth. Leach is repeating Republican Party spin.
The estate tax already allows up to a $2 million exemption, so it will not affect the majority of farmers and small business owners. The net worth of most farmers rarely exceeds $1.5 million and for small business owners it's about $800,000. Even the American Farm Bureau cannot produce one farmer who lost their farm to estate taxes.
The answer is in the Democratic proposal that supports reform, not repeal, by simply raising the tax ceiling for 99.7 percent of estates. Repeal of the estate tax is nothing more than another Bush tax cut for the very wealthy, which would cost the American people $762 billion during its first 10 years. George Bush, Dick Cheney, the Cabinet and CEOs of the largest oil companies would receive windfalls well over $91 million if the estate tax is permanently repealed.
Leach is voting to protect himself and his multi-millionaire friends, not hardworking Iowans in the 2nd district. It's time for his constituency to ask Leach the tough questions. In November, I'm voting for Dave Loebsack. It's time to clean House.
