PLEASE HELP ON ELECTION DAY!

Yesterday I talked to Caleb Faux, Executive Director of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, about what we can do on Election Day.

What I found is that Caleb needs help with leafleting at the polls on Election Day and I offered to help make that happen.  I am hoping that you will also be able to help.

Some background (as I understand it):

  • The best way to make sure that down ticket candidates get votes is to distribute party candidate lists to voters (this is especially important for judicial races)
  • The best way to make sure that voters have those lists with them when they go into the voting booth is to hand them the list as they are walking into their polling location
  • The Obama campaign does not plan to place volunteers at the polls
  • The Driehaus campaign does plan to hire some poll workers for election day, but they will not be able to hire enough people to work at every polling location in District 1 and they will not cover any part of District 2
  • Volunteers are needed to cover the rest of Hamilton County (places like Blue Ash, Anderson, Hyde Park, etc.)

Bill Cahir for Congress

Written by: Lynn Worpenberg on Apr 1, 2008 10:00 AM EDT

This is a note from one of the candidates Paul Hackett is supporting - Cahir for Congress - please consider making a contribution.

Dear Supporter,

It's now 10 PM on March 31.  The Marine in me is saying that it is "2200 hours."  As most other campaigns around the country are nearing their fundraising deadlines, here in Pennsylvania we have until midnight on April 2.  So after you have been blasted and blitzed by every other campaign out there, we now ask that you make a $5 contribution in the last 50 hours of our fundraising quarter.

Go to this site to contribute $5 in the last 50 hours:
 http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/18902

Our campaign was the first to go up on the airwaves.  We are the first to release a viral video.  And now we want to be the first to run a successful grassroots fundraising push.  We are only asking for $5 because it is all a part of our "$5 for the PA 5th" campaign.

You won't believe how far your $5 will actually go.  See, if everyone on our email list were to contribute $5, we could easily add another $5,000 to our fundraising total.  It's the power of people doing things together and not alone and that fits in with my personal philosophy.

Whenever I am out speaking with a group or individuals I often talk about what it was like being a Marine in Iraq.  I explain that we always put our mission ahead of any personal preference and that working together as a group was the key to any success in making sure everyone came back safely.  When was the last time you heard or saw someone in Congress act like that?  And that is just how we operate our campaign and how I will be as a member of Congress.  Together, there is nothing we can't do.

So in the next 50 hours, we ask that you help us prove this point by making a $5 contribution.  If you want to give more, great.  But the most important part of this is that you are working with us and many others to win this seat.

Thanks for everything you do each day.

Semper Fidelis and Respectfully,

Bill

A Message from Paul Hackett

Written by: Lynn Worpenberg on Mar 18, 2008 1:48 PM EDT

Dear Friend of the "Fighting Dems,"

I'd like to call your attention to a sleeper race in central Pennsylvania, where a friend of mine and fellow Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq war whom I have endorsed has a real shot at winning a congressional race that is starting to open some eyes.

Bill Cahir, who has served two tours in Iraq -- including one with me -- is running as a Democrat in Pennsylvania's Fifth District.  Bill hails from Bellefonte and was raised in State College.  Both his parents worked for Penn State where Bill is an alumnus.

Bill has been honored for his service in Iraq. The U.S. Army Civil Affairs Association has just chosen Bill as its enlisted Marine of the Year (2007), and his Marine Corps unit, the 4th Civil Affairs Group, U.S.M.C.R., has tapped Bill as its Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year (2007) as well. And as a result, last week Bill received the endorsement of VoteVets.org PAC, and you can help him secure a $5,000 contribution from the organization by voting for him today.

Vote at: http://www.votevets.org/index_html

Bill has strong credentials for the job. He has worked for Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and for Sen. Harris Wofford, D-Pa., on labor and health care issues. He has also received awards as a newspaper reporter for environmental and education journalism.

So after you have cast your vote for Bill over at VoteVets.org, you can take even more direct action by doing one or both of the following items.Visit Bill’s website and join his campaign at http://www.billcahir.com/home/Or

Make a contribution at http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/18902
Please join me in supporting Bill Cahir, an Iraq veteran, sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve and a distinguished candidate for Congress. Get in early on the biggest surprise of 2008.Thank you and Semper Fi,

Paul

Godspeed Sen. Metzenbaum

"Former Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, an Ohio Democrat who was a feisty self-made millionaire before he began a long career fighting big business in the Senate, died Wednesday night. He was 90."

This announcement brought back a wonderful memory. It was the summer of 2003. The local Dean organization (all local volunteers, of course) had managed to get Dean to come to town for a fundraiser, we were all so excited, looking forward to hearing him speak.

Then it was announced that Governor Dean would be holding a press conference down by the river (before the fundraiser) and he would be accompanied by Sen. Metzenbaum. Of course we all turned out for the press conference. It was so exciting, standing there waiting for the Governor to appear, press people (and cameras) everywhere. Then the Gov came around the corner, with the Senator, accompanied by our cheers! Senator Metzenbaum endorsed Howard Dean that day. It was pretty exciting to have someone 'in the inner circle' agree with us! T

hank you Sen. Metzenbaum, and Godspeed.

DFC December & January Meetings

Special News About Upcoming Meetings:

We had planned to host a DFC Holiday Party in December, but Paul & Philomina McCauley are generously hosting a DFA Trust House Party on December 12 - and we know that December is a busy month for most of us, so that will be the only DFA event in December. Please see the invitation at the end of this note.

BUT, we will be hosting a Pizza Party in January to celebrate our 2007 successes and start planning for LOTS of 2008 successes. We hope you can join us for that important meeting (I plan to invite Steve Driehaus and Vic Wulsin to that meeting). One note, the January meeting would normally take place on the 2nd (the first Wednesday of the month) but I think we may all be a bit exhausted from Holiday partying so we will postpone that meeting until January 9.

One final note - we are working to bring the DFA training to Cincinnati this year (something I have been trying to do for the last couple of years)! Not sure about dates yet, but keep this in mind, the training is excellent and the opportunity to meet the leaders from DFA HQ is the best!

Thank You Ann Coulter

Have you heard about the “Thanks Ann Coulter”, event organized by Equality Ohio, Progress Ohio, and People for the American Way in Cincinnati, Ohio?  When these organizations heard that Ann Coulter would be speaking at Xavier University at the invitation of the Xavier Republicans, they decided to try to find a way to turn something negative into a positive.  As Brian Rothenberg of Progress Ohio said “When someone like Ann Coulter brings a message of division to Ohio, we want to empower people to look for the common good in all of us, and the last time I checked you can’t fight fire with fire; you fight fire with water.”

So they started a month long effort to raise $20,000 (the cost of a Coulter appearance and about $5 per Xavier student) for progressive student groups working for the causes Coulter regularly bashes.  That’s when I got an email from Bo Shuff of Equality Ohio asking Democracy for Cincinnati to cosponsor this event.  Of course I agreed, and immediately started sending emails and posting messages, asking people to donate just $5 to this effort.

Then, on September 6, the date of Coulter’s visit, I was privileged to participate in the “Thank You Ann Coulter” counter event about a block from where she spoke.  When the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus Quartet opened the evening with the National anthem, we had a crowd of over 200 very diverse people!   That crowd listened enthusiastically as the organizers announced that we had raised $28,700 in just one month with donations averaging $5.  What an amazing accomplishment!  Thank You Ann Coulter!  Next the cosponsors introduced the grateful leaders of the student organizations receiving the donations.  I was able to speak briefly about DFA and DFC before introducing Chris Hartman representing Voices of Solidarity, an organization that focuses on peace issues in Latin America and commits itself to being a voice for the voiceless.  A very deserving organization and, like all the others, one that would probably not be at the top of Ann’s A-List.

I’m sharing this today not only because I wanted you to know what a great time I had, but also because this was such a wonderful and simple idea that had a huge impact.  I want to thank Bo Shuff and all the organizers for stepping outside the box and coming up with a new way to respond to events like this one.  Let’s all keep thinking and sharing as we work to take our country back!
