Leadership and Inspiration from Jim Dean and Arshad Hasan!

Written by: Patrick Briggs on Feb 27, 2008 9:32 AM EST

Linked to groups: DFA Pasadena

The Pasadena DFA leadership got to meet with Jim Dean and Arshad Hasan yesterday evening. The last debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama was on when they arrived but that quickly faded into the background!

More below the fold:

Two days ago we got an email from DFA National letting us know that Jim and Arshad were in the Los Angeles area and they asked if we'd like to meet with them. Of course! It was a bit of a scramble because everybody on our steering committee has pretty busy schedules, but a few of the committee were able to meet. It was the coolest "house party" we've ever hosted!

Jim and Arshad, for those of you who've not met them, are two very hard traveling leaders in DFA. They do this kind of thing all over the country, meeting with local DFA chapters, finding out what they're doing, getting feedback from the chapters, and providing inspiration. It would be very easy for the leadership of DFA national to lead from afar. Not Jim and Arshad! It also would have been easy for their meeting with us to have been a meet and greet kind of thing that lasted 30 minutes. Not Jim and Arshad!

These guys engaged us at a substantive level on all the issues that a DFA chapter like us faces. We looked at issues like:

  • candidate endorsing (what we're doing and what other chapters are doing)
  • growing our chapter and our leadership
  • DFA Training
  • using the local media to get our issues out front of our community
  • hearing about how other chapters (getting perspective on what works)
  • organizing precincts for GOTV
  • engaging with other chapters as way to have a greater impact
  • organizing around issues (i.e. SB 840 Universal Health Care here in California)
  • working with other local progressive groups, especially local Democratic Clubs
  • effective field organizing for a campaign

We were also very excited to share with them our upcoming endorsement of Russ Warner, who is taking on Congressman David Dreier this year in the California 26th Congressional District. We are truly looking forward to unseating this 25 year Republican and being a significant part of that effort.

As Jim put it, DFA is about "online organizing for offline action". We agree!

Pasadena DFA wants to thank DFA national for what it does to enable chapters like us to organize the progressive community and empower local citizenry! This kind of engagement from the national leadership is real and powerful. Thank you Jim and Arshad for a great working meeting. We feel a part of this great organization and inspired to do more!

The cost of a college education is a real worry for many families.

But under the Obama Plan a student can earn the first $4,000 of tuition through community service.

Putting a college education within everyone's reach.

And the Obama Plan offers scholarships to recruit a more teachers to make sure our children are ready (also smart/prepared).

With Obama … a new opportunity

Mike Gravel Sues Pro-Clinton 527

Today Senator Mike Gravel filed a federal lawsuit against a pro-Hillary 527 political organization, which is running a YouTube ad... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMVbE8Q7F... ...that, if aired on TV, flagrantly violates the law. The Senator has asked the court to slap a temporary restraining order on this 527 to prevent it from breaking the law with this commercial. This 527 has failed to register with the Federal Election Commission.

The law prohibits 527s from distributing ads that use "phrases . . . or individual words, which in context can have no other reasonable meaning than to urge the election . . . of" a particular candidate or "[w]hen taken as a whole and with limited reference to external events, such as the proximity to the election, could only be interpreted by a reasonable person as containing advocacy of the election . . . of" a particular candidate (2 U.S.C. § 431(17)).

In this ad, the narrator states:

"If speeches could create jobs, we wouldn't be facing a recession. But it takes more. As senator, Hillary Clinton passed legislation to bring investment and jobs to struggling communities, and worked to end tax breaks for corporations sending jobs overseas. Her economic blueprint is endorsed by Governor Strickland. Tell Hillary to keep working on these solutions for the middle class."

Senator Gravel says, "This ad is clearly an appeal for people to vote for Hillary and therefore directly contradicts both the spirit and the letter of the law.

"This ad affects me not only as one of the three remaining candidates for the Democratic nomination but also as a citizen who has watched 527s run circles around the FEC," Gravel declared. "I urge the courts to ban this ad and any other similar ads from airing on TV, or alternatively, would welcome this 527 organization to properly register with the Federal Election Commission and play by the election campaign rules."

Hi Thankful...waving from record breaking winter in Vermont. Worked all night on a 1/2 hr. nap so one more Molson and it's lights out for me. One of our volunteers went and picked up some Obama signs/bumper stickers for me today as I was busy and left them on my porch. Wife said the phone has been ringing every 5 minutes as word is out that signs are here...lol. One committee member who runs a travel agency has some students going overseas on a trip and they wanted signs and bumper stickers to bring with them...how cool is that? No snow predicted for tomorrow so I'm on sign detail after work.

Last night, HC said she wished she could take that war vote back.  She deserves another look.

On the stump, his preachiness trumps her.  In a one to one debate, she wins every time and trumps him.

I wonder how good an intimate communicator he really is.  There's something very aloof about him which I've always noticed.  She's down to earth and last night was very specific.

That said, they are both miles ahead of any repug.

Airman Kills 2 Kids, Self at Okla. Base

By MURRAY EVANS – 3 hours ago

TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, Okla. (AP) — A recently divorced airman who served with distinction in Iraq chased his ex-wife out of military housing with a pistol before killing his two young children and himself.

Tinker Air Force Base officials on Wednesday identified Tech. Sgt. Dustin Thorson, a military computer expert, as the killer in the shootings Monday.

His former wife had filed an order of protection against him last year, saying he had threatened to kill 4-year-old Dylan and 9-year-old Jourdain if she filed for divorce.

Thorson had been under the care of a mental health professional, Brig. Gen. Lori Robinson said. She would not say whether his mental problems were related to stress from his crumbling marriage or his experiences in Iraq.

Air Force Blocks Access to Many Blogs By Noah Shachtman EmailFebruary 27, 2008 | 2:28:02 PMCategories: Info War

Cybercommand The Air Force is tightening restrictions on which blogs its troops can read, cutting off access to just about any independent site with the word "blog" in its web address. It's the latest move in a larger struggle within the military over the value -- and hazards -- of the sites.  At least one senior Air Force official calls the squeeze so "utterly stupid, it makes me want to scream."

Until recently, each major command of the Air Force had some control over what sites their troops could visit, the Air Force Times reports. Then the Air Force Network Operations Center, under the service's new "Cyber Command," took over.

Air Force Launches Recruitment Campaign Touting Cyber Command By Kevin Poulsen EmailFebruary 27, 2008 | 6:06:19 PMCategories: Cybarmageddon!

The Air Force is going large with a new tech-themed recruitment drive sporting the tagline: "A Changing World." In this 30-second TV spot, cool headed airmen in the service's fledgling Cyber Command are seen combating one of the "three million" hacker attacks that target the Pentagon building every day.

My favorite part is when Staff Sergeant Jones wards off the hacker, and the color-coded threat level drops from red to blue.

There's much more Cybarmageddon goodness at the Air Force's official Changing World website, including another video that uses the Estonia DDoS attacks as a call to cyber arms. "The Cold War has given way to cyber war," the narrator intones in a movie trailer hush.

Hi all.

Never agreed with him but always held him in high esteem...Bill Buckley, dead at 82.

"...President Bush called Buckley a great political thinker, wit, author and leader. "He influenced a lot of people, including me," the president said. "He captured the imagination of a lot of people."

But Buckley was also willing to criticize his own and made no secret of his distaste for at least some of Bush's policies. In a 2006 interview with CBS, he called the Iraq war a failure.

"If you had a European prime minister who experienced what we've experienced, it would be expected that he would retire or resign," Buckley said at the time.-----------

Battelle awarded contract for Air Force base construction, renovation

Battelle is one of 25 companies nationwide taking on architecture and engineering work through U.S. Air Force contracts that could total up to $3 billion.

The Columbus-based research and development organization said the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment awarded a contract to complete construction and restoration at Air Forcce and other military installations throughout the U.S. and at operations outside the country.

Battelle was one of 25 contractors named under the contract, which is for an indefinite quantity of work but has a ceiling of $3 billion. The Department of Defense said $2,500 has been obligated to each contractor.

from today's Dallas Morning News:

Six days into early voting – and with a week left – about 360,000 voters in the state's 15 largest counties have cast early or mail-in ballots in the 2008 Democratic primary, compared with 120,000 in the Republican primary.

"It's the intensity. The energy we're seeing," said Diana Broadus, election judge at one of Dallas County's busiest early-voting locations, in Oak Cliff.

"They are coming in ready to vote. They want to make sure their vote is going to count."

And they're doing so at a record pace.

"We have already surpassed the total early-voting numbers for both the 1996 and 2000 elections," said Scott Haywood, spokesman for Texas Secretary of State Phil Wilson. "At this point, it is a record."

Both parties are seeing much higher turnout than four years ago – but it's the numbers in the Democratic primary that are turning heads.

Democratic voters have so far dominated the early voting in Texas' 15 largest counties.

I think the voters in OH and TX should put aside their personal perferences, and take note of the ugliness already starting against BO.  We can't afford to lose this election.  Who can Rove more easily destroy to the point where the dems lose?

That's the question.

Hillary's used to being trashed.  Many repugs prospered under Bill.  Racism is likely stronger and more covert than sexism IMO.

I think BO should announce his proposed cabinet and  VP  now.  Hillary too.  Voters like me who have no horse in this race deserve to know...so that maybe we can jump on one.

This Bzezhinski fellow is not to be trusted.  I've read about him and his involvement in past administrations and he's very suspect...not in everything but enuf to raise eyebrows.

Who can Rove destroy more easily thus giving the WH to the repugs again?   Hillary would get very pissed off if Rove messes with her.  What would genial compromising Obama do?  He has plenty of stuff in his head and he's bright but where's the fire in his belly...the kind that Dean had?  Hillary has spunk.  I like spunk.

OTOH, the repugs should know by now that even with a dem prez, they won't be prosecuted and hearings won't be held; at least with the dems we have now.

New Mexico Governor Makes Case for Hosting New Air Force Cyberspace Command

Feb 27, 2008, News Report

Governor Bill Richardson met with Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Installations, Environment and Logistics, Bill Anderson to make the case for New Mexico to become the new location for the US Air Force Cyberspace Command.

"With several military bases, national science labs and major research universities, we believe that New Mexico is best equipped to host a new Air Force Cyberspace Command, while offering the Air Forces' most talented computer scientists a home with a high quality of life for their families," said Governor Richardson. "We had a good talk, and I made it clear that the State of New Mexico is committed to doing what it takes to win that bid and earning the new command."

Assistant Secretary Anderson outlined the Air Force's new efforts to move toward clean energy, including moving aviation fuel to a synfuel blend and electricity generation on Air Force bases utilizing clean energy technology, such as large "farms" of solar energy panels. Governor Richardson expressed his willingness to work with the Air Force to find clean energy solutions for providing energy to support military installations.

"The Air Force recognizes the need to fight climate change and America's dependence on foreign oil," said Governor Richardson. "The State of New Mexico stands ready to work with the Air Force to encourage clean energy solutions to their transportation and operational and support needs."

Keithie just blew a hole in BO's statement that 90% of his money comes from small donations.

10% of his doners are high rollers, giving more than 50  or 25 dollars and THOSE doners contribute half of his campaign money.

I wish he wouldn't mislead the public like this.  It's these so-called little things that lead me to believe that he's not honest.  And he's very good at talking his way outta things like this.  It's like, what did he just say in such a convoluted way?

Somebody in high places really wants this guy for prez.

seashell

do you think $100 or $200 is a large donation?

you don't even have to report those names to the FEC except as aggregates

making $50 the cutoff is how you make it look like many large ones, nobody can give more than $2300, the number that have maxxed out is of some interest because they are done giving

a million that have given $10 can scratch together maybe $25 the next round so of course they are valued, the difference with Obama is that he values lots of small contributions and has put the money to good use, but you can't run a whole campaign on $10 million either

the expensive fund raising is from people who expect a personal call from the candidate because time is what is really precious

all DFA is going to have to do to get me to open my wallet is fix the blog and put up a bat

Phil, I'm quite sure Keith said it was $1,000 or more.

And yes, $100 is a lot of money to retired seniors, but that's not the issue.

Watch the re-run and check it out.

Keith also alluded to a possible BO/HC ticket which HC didn't seem to rule out.  Now THAT'S interesting.  Perhaps the next VP will have the same power Darth has...or maybe it would be a co-presidency.

RIP William F. Buckley, a truly classy man.

These online polls mean nothing. If they did, Dennis Kucinich would be the Nominee. And besides, if you work hard to freep the polls, as is done, they will win. LOL - announce the Cabinet positions before gaining the nomination?

Oh seashell, your political acumen is sorely lacking. Some of the things you say are really better off left unblogged. NO ONE will say who they want for VP, let alone their Cabinet, without having the nomination in hand first.

Your rhetoric is not flattering you at all.

________________________________________________________________________

Online polls mean nothing to those whose candidate is losing. If they can be freeped, and if Hillary has so much support, why aren't they freeped for her benefit?

Oh I know - she and her supporters are above that. And she never hems and "hod", whatever that means. She just acts like the spoiled child that she is - and it's not doing her any good, quite obviously.

I do commend you hanging on to your DLC candidate though - why you do has us all baffled here.
