Iowa's needs.
If you are able to assist in flood relief efforts, there are many ways to help your neighbors in Iowa. Here are some resources to get involved:
-
Call 2-1-1:
When you call 2-1-1, you can receive information on flood-related assistance, including road closings, evacuation and shelter information. Opportunities to help are available by zip code, so anyone can find out where to help near their home.-
Iowa Concern Hotline:
Volunteer hotline for people who wish to help in recovery efforts.
1-800-447-1985 -
Iowa City Flood Hotline:
319-887-6202 -
Johnson County Emergency Management:
319-356-6028 -
Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service Program -- Cedar Rapids:
319-378-0337
-
If you are not able to assist in one of these areas but would still like to help, visit the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org) to donate to their relief efforts or find out how to get involved.
Thanks,
Obama for America
that's what I want to know..
you are a hero to me and those on this blog. cheers.
with Barack. Posted this at the end of last thread and voila, a new thread.
Big Al will be campaigning with Obama as well to "do whatever he can" to ensure that Obama is elected.
That will mean a lot to BO, you can bet, to have Mr. Big out there with him and for him.

Gore endorses Obama
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
14 minutes ago
FLINT, Mich. - Al Gore says he is backing Barack Obama and will do whatever he can to help him get to the White House.
In a letter to be e-mailed to Obama supporters, Gore says Obama has united a movement over the past year and a half.
The former vice president also asks for donations to help fund Obama's effort — the first time he's asked members of his Web site AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign.
...
I'd hate to think how he looks when he's not happy. According to Mike, here's the next president of the United States.
'pugs hev their work cut out for them selling this slug, but slime is on their side

By Joan In Florida on Jun 16, 2008 3:40 PM EDTThere are sources listed, but not as many as one would like. Nevertheless, McCain is still getting a free pass on the Hanoi Hilton story. This is a good take on it.
War is one thing, collaborating with the enemy is another; it is a legitimate campaign issue that strikes at the heart of McCain’s character…or lack thereof.
There are certainly degrees of collaboration. As a famous novelist once asked, “If you’re a barber and you cut a German’s hair, does that make you a collaborator?”

Joan, I think the blogosphere gets it, but the MSM are dedicated to the war-hero, Maverick, moderate, and straight-talk express mythology.
This story doesn't fit the myth, so will be deeeeeeep-sixed, alas
Citizens for McCain is an orginization within the McCain campaign headed up by Sen. Joe Lieberman. ( Lieberman is still ticked off about the Ned Lamont fiasco)
McCain will get the Jewish vote thanks to Lieberman...McCain will get Hillary Clinton supporters thanks to the media and Joe Liberman...Former supporters of Al Gore are voting for MCain thanks to former Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Liberman...
"Citizens for McCain is an orginization within the McCain campaign for people who put country before political party and support the presidential candidate who has a proven record of bipartisanship," said Lieberman.
Do the Al Gore supporters voting for McCain thanks to former Democracratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman know that while Lieberman is not, Gore is still a Democrat and already endorsed Dean over then Democrat Lieberman in 2004?
Phil, thanks for this thread. You are a hero indeed, "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities".
It's wonderful that Obama has this info on his site and that he's encouraging his supporters to volunteer and make donations.

Won't be popular with this crowd.
As articles by John Pilger, Alexander Cockburn, and Uri Avnery make clear, by groveling before the Israel Lobby Obama has dispelled any hope that his presidency would make a difference.
Obama told the Lobby that in order to protect Israel he would use all the powers of the presidency to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon. As in the case of Saddam Hussein’s “weapons of mass destruction,” the conclusion whether or not Iran is making a nuclear weapon will be determined by propaganda and not by fact. Therefore, there is no difference between Bush, McCain, Obama, and the Lobby with regard to the Middle East. Obama is too smart not to know that US foreign policy has been Shanghaied by the Lobby not in order to protect innocent Israel but to enable Israel’s territorial expansion.
Obama has dispelled hope on the economic front as well. Obama has appointed two leading apologists for jobs offshoring as his economic advisors--Bill Clinton’s Treasury Robert Rubin and Rubin associate Jason Furman. These two are notorious for their justifications of policies that benefit Wall Street, CEOs, and large retailers at the expense of the economic well being and careers of millions of Americans.
Stressing higher returns to shareholders, Wall Street pressures corporations to move their operations abroad. Wal-Mart tells its American suppliers to “meet the Chinese price” or else, a price that US firms can meet only by offshoring their operations to China.
Every job and product that is offshored increases the US trade deficit and lowers US GDP. It is a losing game for America that rewards the overpaid elite of Wall Street and corporate America, while dismantling the ladders of upward mobility.
By enlarging the trade deficit, offshoring erodes the reserve currency role of the dollar, the real basis of US power. Now that US imports exceed US industrial production, it is unlikely that the US trade deficit can be closed except by a sharp reduction in US consumption, which implies a drop in US living standards. If the dollar loses its reserve currency status, the US government will not be able to finance its budget and trade deficits.
Where is the hope when Obama endorses a foreign policy that benefits only Israeli territorial expansion and an economic policy that benefits only multimillionaires and billionaires?
The answer is that Obama’s election would signify the electorate’s rejection of Bush and the Republicans. Considering the cowardice of the Democratic Congress and its reluctance to hold a criminal regime accountable, electoral defeat is the only accountability that the Bush Republicans are likely to experience.
It is not sufficient accountability, but at least it is some accountability.
The Republican Party has morphed into a Brownshirt Party. The party worships “energy in the executive.” If the Brownshirt Republicans are reelected, they only need one more Supreme Court appointment in order to destroy American liberty. That is what is at stake in the November election. As bad as Obama is on important issues, his election will signal rejection of the tyranny to which the Republicans are committed.
Lesser of evils, alas
Jews are purportedly voting for McCain because of Obama's antipathy towards Israel. You hear it all here.
His grovelling was an attempt to finesse that perception--apparently it hasn't worked
We are very anxious to help ANYWAY except through the Red Cross. Post on Volunteermatch.com also, please.
prayers and peace

How can the same Democratic Party, and the same specific individuals, who have co-operated in, permitted and/or legalized the Bush regime’s atrocities – including torture and war crimes – now tell us that the candidate that they endorse is the solution to the horrid things that this system and these individuals have themselves facilitated and colluded in?

I usually only read Newsmax for the non-prescription boner pill ads. ("Not only can I get it up, but I can also last for a while." -- Vialipro ®. "Leonard has a larger penis. There is no doubt about it." -- Orexis ™) But when I saw the headline about prominent Democrats backing McCain, I had to click on it.
Who would it be? Gore? Daschle? Byrd? John Glenn?
Were the wounds from the primaries so deep? Were there new doubts about Barack? Was the party tearing itself apart? Is John Glenn even alive?
Relax.
It turns out when Newsmax says "prominent Democrats" they mean one former congressman, three ex-mayors and former Palmyra, Maine Budget Committee Member Herb Bates.
I don't know what kind of style sheet they work off at Newsmax, but the use of "Prominent" feels like kind of an exaggeration.
Makes you wonder if they're also lying about Leonard's penis.
Good posts, Huron. Alas, it might take awhile for the Obamaniacs to admit it.

Bush and Brown's Warning to Iran
http://www.truthout.org/article/bush-and-browns-warning-iran
BBC News reports: "Gordon Brown and President George Bush have warned Iran to accept their 'offers of partnership' or face tough sanctions and international isolation. The UK prime minister said he wanted to maintain a dialogue with Tehran, but if Iran ignores UN resolutions then sanctions would be intensified."
from the last thread - I went to the Progressive Book Club site - great idea it's creators had! $2 from every purchase of a regular price book (over $10) is donated to the cause of your choice from their list of partners. A good, long list. My only objection and surprise was to see the DLC on the list! In any case, it's a neat concept and I'm deciding which books to order first.

I would love to see DFA on the partner list!

If the Jews and Latinos vote for McC.....Oy!
BTW, I'm a huge fan of Gore and have no intention of voting for McC.
BO's naivete again showed today when saying that fathers should spend more time with their children. Holy moly, many many fathers are deadbeats, no matter what color they are. They are AWOL.
And in BO's speech the other day, he recommended a 700 mile fence along the southern border. Are ya'll happy with that one?
If you didn't see "The Summit" last night, it replays this weekend and it's stunning. It affected me the way "Z" affected me years ago. It's a must see IMO.
It's about the U.S. starting (with help of big pharma) a smallpox epidemic on purpose, (supposed to be contained) blaming an innocent female member of FARC ... all to push thru legislation to further erode our rights...."fighting terrorism." It's not tin foil hat but some might try and make it so.
Look at "Charlie Wilson's War."
Re: food and water shortage. I've been saying for many years that we need to cap population growth or even reverse it. Limit the number of children couples can have....pay inner city and illegal women to NOT get pregnant. Heck, pay any woman if she doesn't have kids. Pay men to have vasectomies.
In the long run, this would be a much cheaper solution moneywise and we may not have to kill each other over food and water. The best answer is usually the one not implemented...
This, along with contraception, would help a lot IMO.
These views have been met with criticism on this blog, but what's new?
to help in Iowa like I did with Katrina. I will check with one of the best charities I know. World Care. They are the run national and world charity. There must be goods that Iowa folks need too and I have some things I imagine would be useful.
And everybody else in Iowa affected by these floods. It's hard to help out physically from here in N.Y., but I did the next best thing. I took your advice and made a donation today to the American Red Cross. If the average Iowa resident has half the good character you do Phil, then it sounds like a State worthy of the help it needs, and a place I'd like to visit someday. (When it's no longer under water that is)
My heart goes out to all the affected in Iowa. I once lost my home to a fire, lost all my possessions, and happened to have just let my homeowners insurance lapse. Total uninsured loss! I got back on my feet only through the help, compassion, and generosity of family, friends, and even total good hearted strangers. I wish everybody in Iowa Good Luck in your recovery. It's time like these that show you the true character of those in your Community.
JM in NY
I hope Al got we he wanted in exchange for his endorsement! There must have been a spirited negotiation for it to have taken so long. :-)
New excellent health care and lack thereof thread.

even jim webb who I saw friday nite at our event before the convention, did not want to rock the boat and look like they would overtake the will of the people.
