Radical conservatives have hijacked the word freedom and distorted its meaning, says Lakoff. He describes how freedom has taken on a new significance in the post-9/11 United States and warns that progressive leaders have failed to recognize and counter the conservative platform. In order to regain their foothold, the Dems must wield language as a strategic weapon to reframe the political debate.
