Historic Primary Spiritual Journey

Written by: Monica G on Jun 5, 2008 1:02 PM EDT

On Sunday before Tuesday's historic end of the primary season, I made a visit to Rochester, New York's lovely Victorian garden cemetery, Mt. Hope. I picked up two small stones and placed one on the grave of Susan B. Anthony. Then I placed one of the grave of Frederick Douglass.  This was to pay respect to these great leaders and to somehow commune with their towering spirits, knowing that in two days either a woman or an African-American man would be chosen by the nation's Democrats to run for President of the United States, and most likely-win.

Going there, I thought myself silly and sentimental, as I know that Miss Anthony and Mr. Douglass are not there, exactly. But I wanted the connection.  Coming home, I was fully prepared for how wonderfully their work has borne fruition: at each grave site there were piles of stones and small coins, the usual markers of a recent visit.

Apparently, a significant number of people in Rochester had the same idea: Let's pay a visit and let our pioneers know that it has finally happened, America has become something like their dream.  No matter which candidate won, the doors have been thrown open. At last.
