Historic Primary Spiritual Journey
On Sunday before Tuesday's historic end of the primary season, I made a visit to Rochester, New York's lovely Victorian garden cemetery, Mt. Hope. I picked up two small stones and placed one on the grave of Susan B. Anthony. Then I placed one of the grave of Frederick Douglass. This was to pay respect to these great leaders and to somehow commune with their towering spirits, knowing that in two days either a woman or an African-American man would be chosen by the nation's Democrats to run for President of the United States, and most likely-win.
Going there, I thought myself silly and sentimental, as I know that Miss Anthony and Mr. Douglass are not there, exactly. But I wanted the connection. Coming home, I was fully prepared for how wonderfully their work has borne fruition: at each grave site there were piles of stones and small coins, the usual markers of a recent visit.
Apparently, a significant number of people in Rochester had the same idea: Let's pay a visit and let our pioneers know that it has finally happened, America has become something like their dream. No matter which candidate won, the doors have been thrown open. At last.
I'm thinking the reason there's been no 'Barack is the Dem candidate' thread is because Danny hasn't been here for awhile.
it's just not news.LOL
After all the complaints about the new blog he probably worked his ass off to build, can he be blamed? I even had to leave for a while. Happily, now people are talking politics again.
He needs to take action and stop Bush from bombing Iran.

A bit of magikal thinking going on here, don't you think? He just won the nomination of the Democratic party by the merest hair-breadth. What exactly is the power you think he has? Jeeze looize. . . .
Top Air Force Leaders Ousted, Defense Official Says (Update1)

June 5 (Bloomberg) -- Air Force Chief of Staff Michael Moseley and Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne are resigning at the request of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a defense official said.
Gates scheduled a news conference later today to discuss the departures.
The departures are related to a number of Air Force problems in handling nuclear weapons and aren't the result of any policy disputes, the official said.

It has been reported today that former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean will stay on as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
I personally think this is the best news of the day.
I know many people don't like Howard Dean. I also know that he was often excoriated - especially on these pages - for his hands-off style during this year's Democratic Presidential primary.
However, there are many things you absolutely cannot deny about Dean's tenure.
For the first time in years, Democrats have a national brand that has been defined by Democrats, not Republican propaganda.
We have strong state parties in virtually every state - a direct result of Dean implementing his 50-state strategy.
We've won Congressional seats that, even two years ago, were hopelessly unavailable. Illinois' 14th - Dennis Hastert's old seat? Mississippi's 1st? Louisiana's 6th? Those are AMAZING pickups.
Compare where we were in 2004, near the end of Terry "Rumrunner" McAuliffe's tenure as chairman. Democrats were in permanent minority status in Congress. We'd just gotten rolled in the Presidential election. Morale at the grassroots level was low.
Now look at where we are, just four short years later. We have control of Congress, which is projected to grow to near-supermajority status this November. We are picking up ruby-red seats. We have a 50-state grassroots program that helped turn out 36 MILLION voters - for a primary!
As for those who would criticize Dean not stepping in earlier during the primary season, I submit that he really didn't have much choice. There were two candidates who were forces of nature battling closely for months. The only way Dean's voice could be influential was as a non-partisan call for unity - which could only happen after one of our great candidates collected enough delegates to claim "presumptive nominee" status.
Yes, Dean is unconventional. He'll always be known as "Screamin' Dean". However, I submit that the Democratic renaissance we currently enjoy didn't start with Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Howard Dean was the architect and the catalyst.
I wish these folks would get off of the "scream". They should know better, but can't resist, I guess.
was the first that many folks had really heard of Howard - and the media made dam sure they heard it, lol! to me it's almost a fond memory now - it's been debunked and Dean is proving himself as a real leader. we may very well NOT be in this strong position had he become POTUS - and I don't know if he could have been elected anyway. the country wasn't ready for a truth-teller in 2004 - just who (besides we deaniacs) would believe there was a politician who would consistently say what he meant. and now most of the world agrees with him... I'm lol, indeed!!! ;)
For that! John, I also wish they would stop the scream thing. it is SO yesterday's news.
Phil ... saw your post and really had hoped to come by your way. In fact, Iowa was clearly on my first proposed itinerary. But then my husband protested that I hadn't taken the northern route since he had his heart set on revisiting his tiny little AFB in ND where he served his military service in the 50s. What to do?
By the time I fitted in what he wanted to see, it was clear that we wouldn't be able to do do everything. So, this time around, Iowa isn't in the planning. We'll be driving a more southerly route coming back.
Well, my spouse wants to explore! So we're off for a bit.
Come back more often
Burt is carrying her in his jacket. She gets such a "Yeah? And what are you looking at?" expression and attitude. Can you believe that we've had her for 7 years now. She brings us quite a bit of entertainment and joy.
and it's good to see you here, Mz! kimmy came by this week too - and mainefem! so happy the blog didn't go away!
If the Wright Distraction had come along and been exploited endlessly and shamelessly immediately after Iowa, as the Dean Scream was, Dean would be out as DNC chair right now and some Hillshill installed in his place.
Unlike Dean, Obama had fortunately already secured the nomination when it happened to him and had plenty of room and time to outmaneuver it.
But you know, as much as I wanted Howard to be President, I think I may have to agree with Edwin, that he's been infintely MORE powerful as chairman. . . . Has changed the future in ways I think we've just begun to barely see. . . . globally, rather than locally (see USA as local here).
(Cheryl) too. Love it!
Dang, went into my word files to see if I could find any of those old aski graphic things we used to do, but they are all at home. Was going to put out a bowl of popcorn and a pitcher of beer.
we'll have ourselves a frontpage thread to honor this historic election!
there's a photo to make both Dean and Obama crushies swoon!

I was invited to be there and get in with the press but the place is so congested. my son is there now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
go chris.
A year or so ago he came up for a visit and we sat down over a beer. He mostly picked my brain and gave me a hard time for staying neutral. The guy is like his boss and is a good listener. I still wish this one had happened ...
I found one email that was in my outbox where I said:

look forward to seeing u at democracyfest.
go for it. but wolf ran his mouth so Jim webb's intro was not heard. wolf is a putz.
Obama thanks Webb.
it's going to be a long campaign - the media is still on an anti info mode.
That Clinton plans to "suspend" (not terminate) her campaign and "support" (not endorse) Obama this weekend.

come on- pay me a visit and hit Howard's bat while you're at it.
BATTER UUUUUPPPPPP!
Yes, I, too, feel uneasy about the Clintons. What a disappointment they have been, and I don't trust them.
How can she bring any credible support when she has called Obama, elitist, has mocked him as promising pie in the sky with empty rhetoric, was as far as she knew he wasn't a Muslim, was not the strongest candidate? How do you backtrack on those kinds of judgments?
I'm sorry, because I do feel she has an ego problem, and I also feel she's not a leader who can bring about unity. I'm really sorry.

By Pat in Colorado on Jun 5, 2008 6:50 PM EDTPhil, good to hear you like Tewes. Thanks for that post.
puddle, if we have the power, shouldn't WE be encouraging BO to address the Iran topic asap? We know bush is trying to keep us there indefinitely and I would like to hear him address that. Is it wise to keep defending and apologizing for BO, or should we tell him what we want and expect? Is he our servant or our master?
So you admit he won by a hairsbreath...he didn't clobber HC after all.
I agree with Anni...it's time to unite behind BO, quit personal attacks on HC and/or other bloggers/people.
Jo, thanks for the dialogue and I will continue to tell BO what to do! LOL
Many many people did not have him for a first choice. He would be wise to pay attention to them. And they want an end to war. The *it's too hard to get out* isn't a good excuse to continue meddling in the ME. People are dying, the country is devastated, children are being mutilated. You get out, orderly, period, and then you don't go into Afghan or Iran.
To stop drinking, you stop drinking. That's it. It's the only way.
To stop killing, you stop killing. That's also the only way.

It is wonderful to feel that we are actually creating the change we want to see. It is sweet to have our candidates representing the people's interests. It is most wonderful to be able to celebrate here, where it all started, with Howard Dean.
