Change In Virginia....
Linked to groups: Blog For America
The results in Virginia were stunning.
Only the day before, I was at a Webb rally in Norfolk, Va. Many of our city committee members were there also. So many familiar faces.
We listened to Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Phi Kellam talk about why we should elect Jim Webb the new senator from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Then Jim was introduced. While I had heard him speak before, I always enjoy Jim's eloquence.
He is an intelligent alternative to the mixed banter of most politicians. Jim is not a "politician", he is a statesman in the order of Eisenhower. A military man who aspires to truly make a change in our country, Not just in Iraq, but on the ground in the United States and in Virginia.
After his speech his handlers tried to get him to leave. There were two more rallys to go to. One in Richmond, and the final one in Alexandria with President Bill Clinton.
But Jim stayed and talked to many of his supporters. One lady standing next to me told JIm how her son was just deployed to Iraq with the Marines. Jim talked to her at length and said his son was not far from where the woman's son was stationed.
It was heart wrenching to watch. I tried not to cry.
I finally got a moment with Jim. I told him I had arranged for precinct captains in all 42 of our city's precincts. I told him we were ready to work for him on election day. He looked me straight in the eye and told me I was one of the reasons he was running. People wanted a change and he was going to promise big change in Virginia.
After the rally my friend and I had lunch. Jim had told us at the rally that a new poll had him up 52-46 over George Allen. We were so excited. Then one of the Webb people came up to us and told us Webb's own internals had him down two points. I was devastated. How could that be. I told my friend "I am so tried of losing".
That night I called all my captains and told them to call me on my cell phone the next day if they needed anything. Well they did. My cell rang non stop. More literature, more workers. The turnout was HUGE.
Jim Webb won in Virginia by over 9000 votes.More people turned out in Newport News than for the Presidential election. We made the difference. We elected Jim Webb to the Senate from the Commonwealth of Virgina.
Linda,
Webb was very, VERY fortunate to have you and your people. You are,
what money cannot buy. I thank you as well for your tireless and
truly gallant effort. Now... about 2008.....
Linda, that is fabulous. You can be sure that you and your efforts ARE the reason Jim Webb won.
Wonderfully done, indeed.
Hooray Hooray, for lindab!
You are an A+++++++++++++ class-act :-)
Remember that Democratic staffer that got his privileges suspended by Republican Hoekstra for suspected involvement in the leak to the NY Times?
Fox News (yeah, I know) just reported that he's been cleared and reinstated.
Cool jc ;-)

Roll Call: Dem Intel Aide's Access RestoredBy Paul Kiel - November 20, 2006, 12:54 PM
Remember Larry Hanauer, the Democratic aide on the House Intelligence Committee whose clearance was yanked because he was suspected of leaking the Iraq NIE?
House Intel Chairman Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) probably hopes you don't, because, as Roll Call reports (sub. req.), Hanauer's access to classified info has been quietly reinstated, "essentially clearing the aide of accusations that he leaked a sensitive report on the Iraq War to The New York Times."
Hoekstra had stripped Hanauer of his access based on remarkably thin evidence -- that Hanauer requested a copy of the Iraq National Intelligence Estimate shortly before the Times reported on the NIE's findings. Nevermind that the Times piece clearly stated that details of the report came from a number of intelligence professionals, with whom the reporters had been speaking for weeks. In fact, as Rep. Ray Lahood (R-IL) admitted, Hanauer was demoted as payback for the Democrats having released, over Hoekstra's objections, a report on Duke Cunningham's dirty doings.

I appreciate the fact that you get every historical fact you quote wrong. That you dont know a fracken thing about history. That every school child in the CCISD knows history better then you do.
Englad was not defeated by the colonies in 1776. In fact the colonies were the one bordering on defeat by XMAS 1776.

Flu Drug Tamiflu May Cause Odd Behavior in Children

MONDAY, Nov. 13 (HealthDay News) -- Responding to reports from overseas, U.S. heath officials are urging doctors and parents to watch for signs of bizarre behavior in children taking the flu drug Tamiflu.
Officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration don't know if the more than 100 new cases of strange behavior, including three deaths from falls, are tied to the drug, to the flu itself, or a combination of both, the Associated Press reported.
The FDA is mulling changes to the Tamiflu label that may recommend that all patients, especially children, be closely monitored while on the drug.
The agency acknowledged that stopping Tamiflu treatment might harm flu patients if the virus is the underlying cause of delirium, hallucinations and other abnormal behavior that make up the symptoms observed in children abroad. Many of the pediatric problems have been reported in Japan, where the number of Tamiflu prescriptions is about 10 times greater than in the United States, the AP said.
Although severe cases of flu have been known to produce such side effects, the number and type of cases, plus comments from

Are we making things worse or better is my bottom line question?
I think the evidence is conclusive....
but you think a lot of things with not much validity behind them.
YOu cannot comprehend how violent things will get in the mideast if we take the sugggestions of people who have nothing at stake but the politics of it.
Robert
I've always liked Michael Richards as an actor. it seems now he's studying the "Streisand Method."
...The CDC is participating in a national influenza vaccine drive to encourage people to get vaccinated whenever vaccine is available. "It is never too late to get your flu shot," Gerberding said. Moreover, getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself from the flu, she added.
At the teleconference, Dr. John Agwunobi, assistant secretary for health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said people could get vaccinated as late as early January.
Dr. L.J. Tan, a spokesman for the American Medical Association, said, "We know that there are substantial medical benefits to receiving the vaccine after Thanksgiving and beyond. It is often mistakenly believed that the only time to get the vaccine is before Thanksgiving."
Gerberding acknowledged that many parents are concerned about the addition of thimerosal to the flu vaccine. Thimerosal, a mercury compound used as a preservative, is suspected by some be at least partly responsible for the growing number of autism cases among children.
"Children can have very serious disease from influenza," Gerberding said. "The flu shot is the best way to protect them, there's no doubt about that. Concerns about thimerosal are on the minds of many parents. We have not been able to identify any data that indicates a flu shot poses any risk associated with thimerosal."
The CDC chief believes the benefits of vaccination are too important to ignore. "If you are balancing the benefit of immunization with what is an unknown or no-risk situation from thimerosal, it seems clear to me what needs to be done," Gerberding said. "That's why we in the public-health community are encouraging parents to get their kids vaccinated. The risk of flu far outweighs any theoretical complications from the vaccine."
In related news, a study in the Nov. 13 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine finds that the flu vaccine slightly increases the risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which occurs when the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system, resulting in tingling or weakness and possible paralysis.
"This study has findings that are consistent with findings that were published a few years ago," Gerberding said. "These findings indicate that there is an increased risk of about one in a million of Guillain-Barre syndrome cases among those who are vaccinated, compared to those who are not vaccinated. But when we compare the risks associated with influenza infection with the risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome, we see that the risk of not being vaccinated far outweighs the risk for Guillain-Barre syndrome," she said.
One expert thinks the flu vaccine is safe and effective, and that thimerosal is not really a problem, compared with the potential consequences of flu.
"We have environmental concerns, but to put it all on thimerosal based on an unproven association is really the wrong way to go," said Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, and author of Bird Flu: Everything You Need to Know About the Next Pandemic. "I am satisfied that there has never been an association shown between thimerosal and autism."

Mother chooses to skip flu shot for her and son
Baltimore Sun
November 17, 2006
By Julie Deardorff
...But using the gold standard of systematic reviews (studies that sum up existing evidence on a topic), Jefferson consistently found that "inactivated vaccines have little or no effect" on flu campaign objectives, including hospital stay, time off work or death from flu.
In one of the largest reviews, involving several million observations of elderly people worldwide during 96 influenza seasons, the benefits of the vaccines are exaggerated by poor study quality, Jefferson found.
And after looking at the evidence on healthy children ages 6 months to 24 months, there was no difference between vaccines and placebo.
Part of the problem is the complexity of the seasonal flu virus. Some years many flu viruses circulate; other years, only a few.
Each year, the flu virus changes the way it looks to our immune system, and the effectiveness of a vaccine depends partly on how closely the formulation matches the circulating virus.
Then there is the issue that flulike illnesses often are mistaken for the flu.
"Influenzalike illness is not only indistinguishable from influenza but far more common, leading to unrealistic expectations of influenza vaccine," graduate student Peter Doshi wrote in response to Jefferson's British Medical Journal analysis.
Doshi published research in the periodical last year questioning whether the CDC's estimate that 36,000 people die from the flu each year is a public relations ploy to market fear.
"While it is often said that influenza poses a serious burden to health, influenza vaccines impose their own particular burden - to the tune of billions of dollars annually," he wrote.

"Stay the course" has gotten a facelift, but it's just as ugly as before...

It looks like Iran, Syria, and Iraq are about to end Halliburton's War in spite of Bush's best attempts to keep it going.
Iran calls for summit with Iraq, SyriaIran has invited the Iraqi and Syrian presidents to Tehran for a weekend summit with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in an attempt to curb the violence that has taken Iraq to the verge of civil war and threatens to spread through the region.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has accepted the invitation and will fly to the Iranian capital on Saturday, a close parliamentary associate said.

Linda in NM, See what I mean, I am on here off and on, but I do try and keep up reading all the comments. We will no doubt be staying in the same area of Florida although we did consider other areas. We are downsizing and lightening the load. We have too much here to take care of now. Kids and grands are not at all happy about it though. They loved coming up and camping in our rooms and going out in the boat.
Well, if Iran and Syria pledge not to attack Iraq, there's no need for a strong military, is there?
Bold stays from post to post unless you change it.
Well, actually, the bold doesn't show up in the post, only in the comment box.

validity? Where's the validity that we are fighting for our freedom in Iraq. All we've proven is that our leaders have the power to totally f*#k up an entire country and bear no responsibilty for the death, destruction and suffering we cause.
That is freedom too. The wrong kind.

Hello Fred.
First it is important to keep in mind that "YOU" personally are not fighting for anything in Iraq.
It is important to remember that because while you and others on the far left might be losing "your" courage, the people who are actually in the fight are not Now we can move on.
Simply accepting the "cut and run" theory in Iraq will prove disastorous for our freedoms. If you and others are willing to bear the cost of that then thats fine. But I doubt you are.
A quick US exit from Iraq will have several catastrophic results.
1. The first is that carnage will rage in Iraq. If you think this is bad what is happening now, then you must have thought that bleeding Kansas pre the civil war was bad compared to our Civil War. The fighting wont stop with us leaving, what will completly break down is any law and order and what will accelerate is the killing on all sides. That might not be important to you, after all they are only Iraqis who will be dying. But to some of us it is.
2. The rest of the governments in the region will start to destabilize. Al Queda will have won its first major victory in its culture war. The concept of "redeployment" is ludicrious. There will be few if any countries in the rergion that will want us there, because the reality will be that they recognize we wont fight anywhere. If we cannot deal with the trivial (in terms of numbers) casualties in Iraq then we cant deal with them anywhere. The amazing thing for me is that the troops are dealing with the casualties and it is their brothers and sisters. If they can, why cant you?
What will result in Iraq is what happen in Lebanon. The local "strong men" will come in and try and take their cut of the Iraq pie. Syria and Iran will carve the place up with Turkey starting their own little fight with the Kurds. Can you deal with that?
3. Oil will skyrocket. I can afford to pay for 5 buck a gallon gas. I bet you and a lot of other people cannot. The milk from Phil's farm will soar in price everything will go sky high, inflation will go out the roof. That will be a disaster for a very weak national economy.
Those are the top three. There are more.
I would not have gone to Iraq, but that doesnt change that we are there now...and we have to deal with what we have done.
I close with this, I've mentioned it before but I mention it again. The troops in Iraq are dealing with the casualties. Cant you as a stay at home, who is not impacted at all, have at least a bit of the same courage?

Neither are Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the NeoCon chickenhawks who started it, screwed it up, and don't want to end it so long as another buck can be bled from the taxpayers and onto Halliburton's ever greedy bottom line.
I guess that's why the message was sent to Bush and Cheney on Nov.7 that they are no longer afforded any credibility in the matter of Iraq by an American public which wants out sooner rather than later.
Baghdad Robert apparently didn't get the message.
I can now post with rich text with Opera on the MAC. Since I have images turned off, I can't see the contents of the tool bar, but the cursor gives me the text.

Unmanned X-37B vehicle to test reusability in space
The Air Force is working on a space vehicle that will allow government scientists to transport advanced technology into orbit, test its capability there, then bring it home to see how it fared in the harsh environment of space. The first X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle will launch from Cape Canaveral in 2008 atop a Lockheed Martin Atlas 5 rocket and land in California at either Vandenberg or Edwards....
This is entertaining. The X-37 has been kicking around for sometime but apparantly it is getting fast track AND the new SecDef I believe is a proponent of it.
FAscinating. Control of Space. This is the "check" to the Chinese vehicle.
Robert
The rest of the governments in the region will start to destabilize.
SURE they will. Fact is, it was the NeoCons dream to destabilize governments in the region. But instead, Iran and Syria are stronger and getting moreso the longer Bush keeps us there.
Face it, NeoCon propaganda is pure BS and only fools still believe in it.
The first is that carnage will rage in Iraq. If you think this is bad what is happening now...
Meet the NeoCons' newest boilerplate talking point. Just call it, "Stay The Course 2."

we controlled the flow of oil to keep the price UP for the Saudis by embargo of Saddam and there was more bootleg oil than there has been since we invaded
we just keep making things WORSE
the counterbalance force to pro-Iranian shia are the Sunni Iraqis that we have been pounding on
they have to be strong enough to demand a share of oil revenues to hold the country together
and Sadr's militia has to be strong enough to keep the Sunnis from controlling Bagdad,
but if we leave the most likely oil price trend would be down as there would be incentive for all to keep more flowing
but if you are really worried mainly about the price of oil the longer we stay the more danger of a regional conflagration and we would be lucky to keep the Saudi flow intact then
Oil will skyrocket.
So NOW it's about the oil!
The miniscule amount of oil coming out of Iraq now thanks to Halliburton's War won't make a difference any way it happens. And the price of gas isn't worth squandering lives in Iraq anyway.
When gas does go up to $5/gal it will be because US oil corporations have manufactured a shortage.

......
but if we leave the most likely oil price trend would be down as there would be incentive for all to keep more flowing...
Fantasy.
First the amount of Iraq "bootleg" oil under Saddam had almost no effect on the price of oil. The SAUDIS production fluctuations (ie some months more barrels some months less) were a great DEAL HIGHER then the amount of bootleg Iraqi oil which was reaching the market. The vast majority of Iraqi bootleg oil was going in trade for refined products since Saddam had almost no functioning refining capability.
Since that statement of fact by you was so wrong, that calls in to question your conclusion that the price of oil would go down (I"ll ignore the comment on militias which is completly wrong).
There are NO analyst in the various oil newsletters that have predicted the price of oil going down with a US departure from Iraq. There is no reason to suspect that this would occur, Particularly if your explanation for it is the pivot point.
As both sides (if the groups can get down to two sides) start to fight in a power vacumn left by US forces the OBJECT OF THE FIGHTING would be to deprive the other side of any internal economic power and that would occur by depriving them of the ability to produce, and export oil.
Think about that Phil. It would be like the UNION saying to the South "Its OK to produce and export cotton" in the Civil War. Do you really believe that either the Shias or the Sunnies would be content to let the "other" side produce oil and have internal revenues?
Seesh
