I took matters into my own hands

Written by: Carolyn Moon on Dec 8, 2007 7:06 PM EST

Since we have people here in Nueces County who haven't spoken since one voted for Humphrey and on voted for McGovern at the Chicago Convention, I decided to do something about it. i'm running for Democratic Party chair for Nueces County, Texas. I have already started reminding people that it's time to get over it. After all, both guys lost to Nixon.

Wish me luck or send me money. I'm getting some disrespect already. I'll get over it.

It Can Be Done

For years, Corpus Christi, TExas, has been run by a cadre of folks who are in it for what the city can do for them. Saturday, The Beach Access Coalition, a very gressroots group formed to fight against the land speculator the wanted to close access to the Padre Island beach to cars, which would effectively close it to the people of Texas. We fought them all year in 2006 with 2 rounds of petitions and finally an election. We were outspent $4000,000 to $30,000, with the local newspaper on their side.

When the city elections were coming around, we were afraid it would be the same old thing, but we had 4 excellent candidates to endorse, and all won. Finally, the voice of the people will be heard.

This was not a DFA organization, the members were to the right of Attila the Hun and to the left of Mao Tse Tung, but the grassroots way we had to work, person to person, is effective.

The Tejano Dems and we will host our precinct chair insurgency training May 9, Wednesday, at 6 pm. It will be at the Taqueria Jalisco on Kostoryz. I'm hoping this will be a good start for our plan. Trying to get together when we are all trying to take the city back for the people in a runoff election makes meeting hard.

Bottom of the ballot

Written by: Carolyn Moon on Nov 15, 2006 8:23 AM EST

Because I believed from my first Democracyfest that there should be a Democrat in every race, I decided to run for Justice of the Peace.  Sad to say, it was the Republican county chair who told me how to do the filing.

My main difference with the several "How To" conferences I have attended is that I don't think that the door-to-door  blockwalking is as effective as erstwhile. People have repeatedly told me they find it annoying. Several of my frineds have foundno one home in 3 hours of heat exhaustion.

So I did my "blockwalking" in neighborhood bars. I met more people, in less time, and could actually sit and talk with folks. If they had the don't bother me look, I just gave them my card and went away. I had may people tell me they were republicans, but they'd vote for me and one even gave me a contribution.

The other thing I did was make a logo that I used on everything. While everyone else used red, white, wnd blue, I used my orange crescent moon on blue.  That was on my cards, t-shirts, and signs and got a lot of attention. it made my friends and my cars very distinctive as door magnets.

I feel very successful in my race, even though I was drowned in the unpresidented Republican wave here in Nueces County. I did well against a 12 year, unpopular incombant, but we have the first Republican county chair in 104 years. And of course, Texas Dems had no money or support from the state party. Help us!

That's my new MySapace page. I'm just learning how to play with it.

Silly as it may sound, I am going to neighborhood bars instead of knocking on doors. I meet more people in a shorter period of time, and they seem delighted that I want to vosit and have a beer with them. I've also been registering voters.

Join me.

Democrats Running For Everything

A widely held view of the world suggests Democrats can't get people to run in statewide races. Wrong!

We need to get to know them. All should be invited to this forgotten corner of Texas.

We all need to pay attention to Nueces county races, too. A lot of Democrats filed to run in the primary, and some, like Second-Hand Rose Vela, showed their true colors by switching parties.

And a little added action, I am running for precinct 2 Justice of the Peace. Larry Cox out there hasn't had an opponent in over a decade. Shame on us.
