Bottom of the ballot

Written by: Carolyn Moon on Nov 15, 2006 8:23 AM EST

Because I believed from my first Democracyfest that there should be a Democrat in every race, I decided to run for Justice of the Peace.  Sad to say, it was the Republican county chair who told me how to do the filing.

My main difference with the several "How To" conferences I have attended is that I don't think that the door-to-door  blockwalking is as effective as erstwhile. People have repeatedly told me they find it annoying. Several of my frineds have foundno one home in 3 hours of heat exhaustion.

So I did my "blockwalking" in neighborhood bars. I met more people, in less time, and could actually sit and talk with folks. If they had the don't bother me look, I just gave them my card and went away. I had may people tell me they were republicans, but they'd vote for me and one even gave me a contribution.

The other thing I did was make a logo that I used on everything. While everyone else used red, white, wnd blue, I used my orange crescent moon on blue.  That was on my cards, t-shirts, and signs and got a lot of attention. it made my friends and my cars very distinctive as door magnets.

I feel very successful in my race, even though I was drowned in the unpresidented Republican wave here in Nueces County. I did well against a 12 year, unpopular incombant, but we have the first Republican county chair in 104 years. And of course, Texas Dems had no money or support from the state party. Help us!
