It Can Be Done

Written by: Carolyn Moon on May 13, 2007 9:15 PM EDT

For years, Corpus Christi, TExas, has been run by a cadre of folks who are in it for what the city can do for them. Saturday, The Beach Access Coalition, a very gressroots group formed to fight against the land speculator the wanted to close access to the Padre Island beach to cars, which would effectively close it to the people of Texas. We fought them all year in 2006 with 2 rounds of petitions and finally an election. We were outspent $4000,000 to $30,000, with the local newspaper on their side.

When the city elections were coming around, we were afraid it would be the same old thing, but we had 4 excellent candidates to endorse, and all won. Finally, the voice of the people will be heard.

This was not a DFA organization, the members were to the right of Attila the Hun and to the left of Mao Tse Tung, but the grassroots way we had to work, person to person, is effective.
