So, is the beef alive or dead?
"we're getting very close to what we had before. All we have to do is ignore the derogatory term 'Watercooler', the 2nd class accommodations"
<
Accept that? No.
HQ, or or what ever entity has shunted us to below ground (knowingly or without malice) must respond to "the People."
I am fed up. I have seen a lot of cr@p here for years, as one group or another dis' one, two, or more folks. Of course, I have lent a helping hand (to my shame) at times, which yields nothing but failure.
But, when DFA dis' the BFA community I am looking for the door.
And...then there comes the recent small steps made to accommodate the BFA community, and I am not yet gone. I am ... hopeful, but ...
(721words) , neato!
I, finally (my bad!), took a fast scan of Tom Asbill's Kudos DFA lead comment (front page?) and had a positive impression, but for his positive view of the WC.
That would be my beef. Not with Tom. And, actually, "beef" is a bit strong. I just have a differnt opinion of the top down your throat > Watercooler.
I did the same thing -- I saw the title - after we've been fighting this losing war for a month - and my hot button went off -- his diary is really very positive and innocuous till the last couple of paragraphs. Also, he's been participating in the Great American Conversation which must have taken some courage considering how loaded for bear we all are.
Hey, Thankful told me that you and Huron John got booted?
I haven't been looking in much lately, so I ain't up on anything. I don't even know enough about what is going on with Phil to comment (although I wish him and his all the best).
Don't worry about "the boot"
the boot is just a check
we all need to re-evaluate every now and again
it is healthy!
Well, the rain broke here, so off to Providence?

It's nice, right?
As I have read the regular commenters posts and objections to the water cooler, I can understand their frustration since many of them have been here from the beginning of DFA...but we should all be proud of the direction that DFA is going in, and celebrate it...collectively!
Yep - we could use some fresh air and sunshine.
See ya later Painie - gonna get off for awhile.
Very nice to hear that many of the regulars are coming around to the new format. And I can say for myself that it is a lot easier to work with everyone in finding sollutions that can work for the entire DFA community when the comment war, personal attacks, and angry accusaitions are non-exsistant. Thank you Annilow for working with us to make this work.
Imn2Paine, as for the number of comments on the front page posts, I'm curious why you think the number matters. I would love to hear what your thoughts are on that?
I was using the #totals as a provocation to ask the question:
Where's the beef? LOL
< by which I intend - why the need to shunt the BFA community (regulars) off to the side and down to the bottom of the side bar. The numbers don't justify the cataclysmic disruption to the ...regulars comfort level.
One beef I will always have, Charles, if it remains a thorn in my side (mind/vision) will be the name and what has surrounded the name Watercooler (IE WC/toilet LOL).
________
My girlfriend is gunna kill me if don't help cook, so I may not respond too soon.
Charles, with all due respect I am not 'working with you to make this work.' There is still plenty not working and not being listened to -- the name "Watercooler" and the formatting and bugs in the "Watercooler" to name a couple. I just don't want to get kicked off the blog. Hope this comment doesn't come across as offensive -- if it does, I'll delete it.
Ann
I don't know how you were reprimanded. Whatever it was, you have little to worry about, as far a getting booted or receiving another reprimand.
Stand up and breathe.
I got the boot. Heck, it isn't a bad sfraternity. Few have remained away. Well, for very long, anyway LOL ;-)~ And, when they returned they moderated thenselves 'til they got their sealegs back. Maybe you rocked the boat, and the boat's momentum jetisoned you. You are safe.
...what ever group YOU'RE in must be the kool kids table...
Not, and I know it. Wasn't fun, wasn't the end of the world. The worst part was thinking I belonged there, which of course was the hurdle I had to find a way around over or through...you, too.
All things must pass (go).

- I think what was most puzzling to many is
By Denise in San Mateo County on Aug 2, 2008 6:55 PM EDTwhy HQ didn't work with everyone to find solutions together in the first place?
Angry attacks, comment wars, how ever you want to describe it would not have been necessary if only that consideration and thoughtfulness had been in place,.
I do appreciate the way it is today, but it took a month of convincing you that this is what we wanted all along. It should not have taken that long.
My take on the number of comments thing is the claim that hundreds of people were not commenting because of our off topic discussions. As you can see, that really wasn't the case.
Not trying to be adverse - just telling you how it really is. The blog is how it is at this moment because HQ finally, after a month, listened to us.
Ciao - off for a fun evening. Hope you have one as well.

I hope Tom wasn't scared or disgusted off with the attack on him.
Frank asked the right question..."Why do you (plural) take it so personally?"
The saints and sages and yogis would respond: "Becuz ego is driving you, not Love." 12 step programs say the same thing. It was my ego that lead me to use a nasty term regarding the people changing the blog.
Whenever I feel huge anger or just even a tiny bit of annoyance, it's false ego, keeping me from coming from a loving place. We bloggers are mirrors for one another. If s/o posts s/t to or about me that annoys me, it provides me the opportunity to look at my own shortcomings. Or I can project that feeling I don't like and blame the other.
The 12 step programs ask us to keep the focus on our own shortcomings, not blaming or attacking others. It asks us to take our own inventory, not the inventory of s/o else.
"The Course in Miracles" also talks about this.
Does bloggie reflect world anger?
Oh say a summer wasted trying to get Tara to admit that *some* kind of control of the blog might be a good thing. And this to a woman who admitted she didn't *like* blogs -- she liked forums.
From the hours and hours and hours I've spent holding hands and mediating fusses on the blog.
From the care and concern for its effectiveness in dealing with with various and sundry trolls.
From holding hands of various friend/co bloggers when HQ in one of its human manifestations has done real and terrible and very personal damage to individual bloggers.
This blog has been home, friendship, solidarity, love, compassion, caring, concern, fun, laughter, hardwork, joy, pain, consolation for nearly five years. Why would I take it personally when people who have experienced NONE of this take it upon themselves to change the core of what it has been? To destroy the work of hundreds and hundreds?
Time's up. Out of characters. Have to go find a magenta crayon. . .
Bloggie MAY reflect world anger. Or USA anger. We all worked so hard in 06 to get the Dem's in the majority and then they have done absolutely nothing. Conyers has done absolutely nothing. Bush says 'my way or the highway' then Barack starts spouting all this middle of the road stuff - or it seems like - since he got the nomination. My road or the highway - that's just the way it is. Then one day we come to the one place where everybody knows your name, and this army of people you never heard of start posting stuff and you don't get to post unless you post on their topic or your comment gets whisked away to the watercooler and all the complaining you do just merits a 'it's my way or the highway' -- I know about page 446 but honestly I don't even know what the Doctor would say about this -- that acceptance is the answer -- that nothing in God's world is a mistake. Honestly -- I'm having trouble with it here.
I hope we they someone doesn't let them close out the anthrax case just b/c one man quote unquote 'committed suicide.' I think this may be the straw that broke the camel's back - that America is gonna say 'wait a minute' we need more info. At least I hope that happens.
- Well, you nailed it whith this grouping of characters become pregnant
By Imn2Paine on Aug 2, 2008 10:17 PM EDTGood, Ann:

Hi Çharles,
I'd like to apologize in real time if you're here. My anger/ego carried me away.
Do you suppose we could have a way to stop the personal attacks? The one on Tom last night was painful to read. Perhaps you'd consider sending personal letters like the one Anni and I got. It was respectful and brought me to my senses immediately. Maybe you could write up a *personal attack* form letter. (half joking, half not)
I still feel the name Watercooler is off-putting..and...when someone opens the front page, it's listed last, as tho unimportant. How many people will scroll down and go "Wow, that's sounds fantasic?" And how many people will read the second thread? Perhaps a new interesting name would help. Was it Subway who suggested "The Great American Conversation?"
Thank you for getting us this far, despite all the abuse thrown at you. Also 1000 characters is limiting for some very hot breaking news. Maybe you
I think we could have gotten to where we are today without the anger, mine included. Persistent discussion may have done it. Impassioned pleas may have done it.
When is anger justified and who gets to say when and if it is?
Personal inventory time. I know exactly why I got angry with HQ. And it had little or nothing to do with blog changes and everything to do with my false ego and I can be spot specific on this, if asked.
Who else will step up to the plate on this one? Who will trace the roots of his/her anger to reach the truth?
HQ has given us a GREAT opportunity for growth at many levels.
HQ, thank you!!!!!
Troo dat. That's what my former best friend Diane did by sleeping with a man she knew I was in love with and had been with for two years. Bless her.
OK I'll bite -- I'm still very angry. I think I'm s/b looking at the underlying fear. I think my fear is in loss of the blog and the community -- altho it may be pride - I haven't dug that deep yet -- I have not gotten to the 'forgiveness' place or the 'let go and let God' place yet. I haven't gotten to the acceptance place yet either. Which step is this lol..
Havard Professor Jonathan Zittrain descibes perfectly what HQ's took BFA on with the roll out of a half finished product that hadn't been Beta tested like Luigi's or Tara's attempts, but we had our hopes up that somebody at Hq's got it about the special place the original BFAS had been to spawn the "blogospere".
any IT that got his hands on it would approach that honor with reverence with a little historical background
I refer you again to my link the Frischmann's review of Zittrain's book in Science,
the dichotomy between generative and sterile technology, as Zittrain defines it:"a system's capacity to produce unanticipated change through unfiltered contributions from broad and varied audiences"
five factors: leverage, adaptibility, ease of mastery, accessibility, and transferability
as the reviewer says: a substantial contribution in the debate about the future of the internet
The blog's pushing back against top down narrowing has a good backing in Zittrain.

ÇNN right now...Amanpour's "Buddhist Warriors." Excellent!
I grew up near a slaughter house. I love cows. My Father's older sister and her husband owned a small dairy farm in Indiana. We worked on their farm every year. My Mother's family were mostly all farmers.
I'm sorry, puddle. That must have hurt. I understand betrayal of friendship.
My hubby and I went to college with Evan Bayh. He does nothing for the Democratic ticket. He's not even pro-choice and his votes are worse than Joe Leiberman's. He is not his Father. Little Evan Bayh is a past president of the DLC. And a real boring politican but nice eye candy for some folks. Pretty isn't everything. You've got to have some brains and the knowledge to know how to use them in order to be effective. Besides we've already had a VP from Indiana, Dan Quayle. Bayh didn't do very well in Calfiornia when he was thinking about running for president. Our folks took a look behind the pretty face and started looking at his record. They were not amused with what they found out.
Rokita announces second-term staff transitions
Indianapolis (September 1, 2007) – Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita has named Matt Tusing, former House Republican Deputy Communications Director, as Deputy Secretary of State and Chief of Staff. Rokita also announced staff transitions for Chris Naylor, lead attorney for Rokita’s Prosecution Assistance Unit, who will become Indiana Securities Commissioner, and Allison Fore, former Communications Specialist for the Illinois State Treasurer and recent gubernatorial candidate, who will become Communications Director.
Tusing, who currently serves as an Attorney General’s Office advisor on matters related to professional licensing and investigations, previously served Indiana as Deputy Communications Director for the Indiana House of Representatives Republican Caucus. [...]
I sure hope it isn't Bayh. What a snore-fest he would be...like watching paint dry.
Nite all. Sweet dreams.

By Annilow on Aug 2, 2008 4:21 PM EDTI don't know Painie - maybe if we flog this horse enuf...there have been two hopeful signs in the last week. 1) The addition of the phrase 'open thread' to some posts, then Thankful's own open threads, meant we could at least express ourselves. 2) As of yesterday, after Phil and Monica walked off the job, they put the WC in the main stream of posts, having - after great complaint - given the WC an archive. So now we have not only an open thread to post on, but a way to track back through comments and replies. So we're getting very close to what we had before. All we have to do is ignore the derogatory term 'Watercooler', the 2nd class accommodations (centered comments, no ratings, blown margins), and ignore those other posts where no one comments anyway, and we're in business. :~). If I've said anything that is offensive or qualifies as hate speech here, it is not intentional. Please let me know and I will remove it. Thanks.
