Loop DFA: Summary / Protest TODAY! / Askew events

Written by: Michael Blossom on Sep 8, 2006 1:04 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Loop DFA

Hello Member, thanks for being a member of Loop DFA!

-> Here is a summary of Wednesday's Loop DFA linkup:
* 25 people attended.
* Our guest speaker was Cuahutemoc Morfin, who is running for alderman in the 25th ward (Pilsen/Tri-Taylor/Chinatown). Temoc gave a great speech, and wants to bring power back to the people of his ward -- right up our alley! Hopefully, Temoc will keep us updated as his campaign progresses.
* Our main event was training for David Askew's campaign. David has been attending our meetings and events for over a year -- he's one of us, and he's running a great campaign for alderman of the 2nd ward. See below for info about how to get involved. His campaign will be one of our group's main focuses in the next few months.
* We updated the group on Democracy For Illinois, which is about to adopt by-laws and elect coordinating committee members. See below if you're interested.
* We discussed our planned New Orleans trip. It's taking shape! We want to go for 5-7 days, probably sometime between Nov. 8 and Nov. 18, or possibly in early December. We'll be volunteering through Hands On New Orleans to help rebuild housing for low-income N.O. residents, and they provide housing & food. We'll be looking for discounted transportation options. Please contact me if you want to join us, and let me know your date preferences.
* Ted gave a brief review of the Bud Billiken Parade and the preliminary budget hearing, and we will discuss the budget hearing and local issues more next month.
* We invited members to join us to protest Hastert this Friday (today!). See below for details.

-> PROTEST TODAY at 5:30!
* Today (Friday) at 5:30, we'll be joining our friends at CodePINK in front of the Chicago Hilton (722 S. Michigan) to protest Dennis Hastert, who's hosting a fundraiser there. The Speaker of the House is a pro-war destroyer of civil liberties and deserves to hear from us! No need to RSVP, just meet us there. Details are at:
www.ccawr.org/actions/details/?i...

-> LET'S WIN THIS ONE! DAVID ASKEW for 2nd Ward Alderman
* DFA is all about building the 'farm team' all over the nation, and our guy is running for alderman. Please do what you can to help us secure a real victory! For example:
* Loop DFA will do a group event to collect petition signatures on Tuesday, Sept. 19th, after work at 5:30pm, in the South Loop. Several people signed up at the linkup -- Please join us! Details and RSVP:
www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
* Even more important: Rally & petitioning on Saturday, Sept. 23rd! This is David's formal announcement rally. Afterward, we'll branch out to collect signatures that day. They need a lot of people for this one, so please join us if you can. Even if you cannot stay & petition, please come to the rally & bring interested friends & family. We will meet downtown and go together to the rally site. Details & RSVP:
www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
* David also needs volunteers for events this weekend:
1. He will be going to a South Loop event today, Friday, at 4:30.
2. He will be manning a booth at the UNCF Walk-a-thon tomorrow, Saturday, morning at 7:00.
3. He will be attending a lawyer's picnic tomorrow, Saturday, afternoon.
4. He will be attending another South Loop event Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
5. He will be attending and MC'ing a big West Side event Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
To volunteer for these, email David at:
askewdr@hotmail.com

-> Interested in helping build Democracy For Illinois?
* DFI will soon be adopting by-laws and electing volunteers to its Coordinating Committee. If you are interested in any of these positions, please let me know by sending me an email at:

Moderator of Liaison Committee
Secretary of Liaison Committee

Attend DFA Linkup - Chicago Loop on September 6!

Written by: Michael Blossom on Sep 5, 2006 6:19 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Loop DFA

Dear Member,

Please join us for our September linkup! It's tomorrow, Wednesday, September 6th, at 7pm.
RSVP: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=109...

This month, in addition to our usual dose of food, drink and political discussion, our agenda includes:

* David Askew update and training. David is our group member who is running a great campaign for alderman of the 2nd ward. He will be officially launching his campaign this month, and so we'll be learning how we can help by collecting petition signatures, and more. Our group has adopted the South Loop and downtown portions of the 2nd ward, and we're going to win this campaign! We helped win Wisconsin for Kerry, we damn near won the primary for Cegelis, and now it's time to win for real, and David is our guy!

* Cuahutemoc Morfin, candidate for alderman in the 25th ward, which is Pilsen. Cuahutemoc is one of the new wave of independent candidates for the City Council, and he is coming to introduce himself to our group.

* New Orleans service trip. We are now tentatively scheduled to work with Hands On New Orleans, a great organization which provides volunteers with housing and food, as well as projects of course (gutting/rebuilding housing). We're looking at the 2nd/3rd week of November for our trip, so please come tomorrow and help us finalize the plans!

* Protest this Friday! We'll have a group outing to a protest of Dennis Hastert this Friday in front of the Chicago Hilton & Towers. Mr. Hastert, in case you don't follow him, has been pro-war, anti-civil liberties, and basically one of the bad guys in Washington. Now he's hosting a $500 per plate fundraiser at the Chicago Hilton, so we'll be there along with Chicago Area CodePINK and the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism. 5:30 this Friday.

Ok, I hope to see you at our September linkup tomorrow!

Loop DFA: August Summary

Written by: Michael Blossom on Sep 5, 2006 5:48 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Loop DFA

Hi Loop DFAers, just wanted to give you a rundown of what happened at last month's linkup, and since then:

* At the August linkup, we heard a recap of the recent DFA training in Warrenville, which by all accounts was a resounding success.

* We also had a vibrant discussion of local issues!

* Building on our discussion of local issues, we had a presence (and delivered a speech) at the City of Chicago's Preliminary Budget Hearing on August 24th.

* On August 12th, we marched in the Bud Billiken Day Parade, along with Code Pink, getting great response to signs calling for impeachment and to get out of Iraq.

* On August 26th, our group member Ray organized and issues canvass for a great candidate for state representative, Joe Vosicky (www.joevosicky.com...).

Stay tuned for another email about September's linkup, which is Wednesday, September 6th!
