Help the fighting Irish!
Linked to groups: Philly for Change
Hey Member,Notre Dame may be kicking off against Purdue on Saturday afternoon, but the REAL fighting Irish are going to be walking the streets of Northeast Philly all day Saturday and Sunday with Philly for Change members.
Brendan Boyle and Patrick Murphy are two great progressive candidates - experienced, passionate, and ready to start moving our commonwealth and our country toward a better future. Both have very tight races in parts of Northeast Philadelphia and Montgomery/Bucks counties - Boyle is trying to oust George Kenney from the State Legislature and Patrick Murphy is attempting to knock off a freshman member of Congress, Michael Fitzpatrick.
This weekend, Saturday 9/30 and Sunday 10/1, Philly for Change will be hitting the pavement in the divisions of Northeast Philly where these two great candidates overlap. We'll also be identifying pro-Casey supporters at the doors, to help in our anti-Santorum efforts. Please join us!
Both candidates are within striking distance of their opponents and volunteers going door-to-door is their best shot for victory. The latest poll has Murphy within five points of Fitzpatrick; Boyle also has a good shot at getting rid of a 20-year incumbant. These are exciting races and we're just asking you to come out for a few hours on either Saturday or Sunday to help propel these candidates to victory!
To sign up for a Saturday shift, click Here: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
If you want to come out on Sunday (don't worry, the Eagles aren't playing until Monday night!), click Here: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
We'll have carpools from center city, so don't worry if you don't have transportation to the Northeast.
Wear comfortable shoes, be prepared for rain, and come help us take back the State House and Congress!
See you there!
Jen Murphy
Urgent Action: Tell Fumo that we demand local control!
Linked to groups: Philly for Change
Dear Member,This just in from Hallwatch and NABR:
As early as today, September 27, 2006 the Pennsylvania Senate may vote to take away from the City of Philadelphia its power to regulate the two casinos mandated for our city.
Please take five minutes to send a fax to State Senator Vincent
J. Fumo NOW. Let him know you think this is a bad idea. Hallwatch has set up a web page that makes the whole process easy:
www.hallwatch.org/faxbank/fumozo...
Please forward a copy of this email to anyone you think might be
willing to write Fumo.
Fumo is pushing an amendment to the Gaming Act that would take away the City's right to set and enforce zoning and safety rules on
casinos. Fumo's amendment would also strip residents of their right to be heard on the design and operation of the casinos at a zoning hearing.
What this means in practical terms:
* Residents will have no opportunity to challenge inappropriate or
intrusive designs that violate zoning laws.
* Nor will residents be able to use zoning to negotiate with casinos
over operational issues (think drunk drivers & the availability of
free booze 24/7).
* Gaming Board employees from Harrisburg with no safety experience will enforce fire, building and zoning codes for the Philly casinos.
* The City will not be able to set its own zoning rules for casinos.
Instead it will have to rely on the Gaming Board to enforce a
minimal zoning code far below city standards (e.g., no set backs
required, just 1 parking space for every 10 visitors, giant flashing signs allowed etc.)
Please just take a few minutes for this important action.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Murphy

Philly for Change Endorses Four More!
Linked to groups: Philly for Change
Hey Member,Did you realize that there are only 46 days left until Election Day? We have a unique opportunity to take back control of BOTH Houses of Congress and to unseat Republicans in our State Legislature!
Philly for Change has endorsed many quality candidates and campaigns in the city and surrounding counties. Now is the time to really get involved so that we can all celebrate victory together on the night of November 7th. Let's make 2007 the year that we start getting things on the right path toward a more progressive future for our Commonwealth and our Country.
At our last meeting, we voted overwhelmingly to endorse four additional candidates, all of whom spoke at previous meetings:
1. Brendan Boyle, Democrat for State Representative, 170th District (Northeast Philly and part of Montgomery County). Boyle has a really good chance of unseating a long-sitting Republican. Check out his campaign at http://www.voteboyle.com
2. Marie deYoung, Democrat for State Representative, 163rd District (Delaware County). Rev. deYoung, a Halliburton whistleblower, could be a force for Democrats in this heavy-Republican area. Check it out at www.deyoungforrep.com...
3. Paul Lang, Democrat for State Senate, 6th District (Bucks County). Lt. Lang is a great progressive candidate that can help us gain a majority in the State Senate. Learn more at http://www.electlang.com
4. Rick Taylor, Democrat for State Representative, 151st District (Montgomery County). Taylor wants to turn Montgomery County a bit bluer and you can help him by getting involved. Check him out at www.taylorforpa.com...
Philly for Change will be showing its support to the Philadelphia-area candidates by staging a super canvass next weekend, 9/30 and 10/1 in Northeast Philadelphia! We'll be knocking on doors in the area where Brendan Boyle's and Patrick Murphy's districts overlap. In addition to talking to voters about these two great candidates, we'll be helping in our anti-Santorum efforts by telling voters why Philadelphia needs to defeat Santorum in November. Please join us! Both Boyle and Murphy are within striking distance of their opponents. Our efforts could really help put them over the top!
We'll have carpools from Center City, and rides from the Cornwell Heights train station if you don't have a car. Please RSVP for this big event!
If you can help out on Saturday, 9/30, let us know here: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
If you're cool with Sunday, 10/1, sign up here: www.dfalink.com/event.php?id=127...
It will be a lot of fun. I look forward to hitting the pavement with you!
Happy New Year!
