Call your congressman to support improved Holt Voter Confidence Bill

Written by: Mary Shindell on Jun 6, 2009 10:05 AM EDT

An improved draft of the Holt Voter Confidence Bill is about to be introduced in the Congress. We need to get our Michigan legislators to co-sponsor, especially Mark Shauer and Gary Peters, who should take a strong interest in election integrity. If you are in their district, please call and ask them to sign on. Shauer's Washington Office is (202) 225-6276; Peters' is (202) 225-5802. They really need to hear from their own constituents. The new Holt has been extensively revised by election integrity activists and experts, and will:

Ban direct-recording electronic (DRE) voting machines with a 2014 deadline for replacement.

Require voter-marked paper ballots.

Require one of two kinds of audits a) tiered sample size by contest margin or b) better, statistically sampled for a 95% confidence level (our Michigan proposal).

Mandate sign-off for a state's audit plan by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NOT the EAC, importantly) by Aug. 1 prior to a federal Nov. vote.

This Holt version will provide impetus for the enactment of our Michigan Post Election Audit Bill if we cannot get a fair hearing before the State Senate. Please call your legislators.
