Wal-Mart movie Friday night, 3/10

Written by: Tom Smith on Mar 2, 2006 1:57 AM EST

Sponsored by the Social Justice Advocacy Group with the Lifelong Learning Committee of Neighborhood UU Church

This film has been seen across the nation in homes and in community centers where citizens care about the quality of life in their communities.

Immediately following the film, there will be a group discussion with members of Moms Against Wal-mart, a group of concerned citizens working to stop the opening of a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Rosemead. They will describe their efforts to keep Wal-mart from adversely affecting the quality of life in their community.

The film takes the viewer on a deeply personal journey into the every day lives of families struggling to fight against a Goliath. From a small business owner in the Missouri to a preacher in California, from workers in Florida to a poet in Mexico, dozens of film crews on three continents bring the story of an assault on families and American values. Current and former employees, managers and executives will tell all about the corporation's inner-workings. Wal-Mart is based on individual human beings, all over the world, at all levels of society, telling their story in very personal terms.

Rob Reiner, in commenting on the film, said "The free market functions effectively only when consumers have all the facts. A brilliant new film by Robert Greenwald tells the real story of the corrosive effects that Wal-Mart wreaks upon the communities in which it operates and the men and women it employs."
