Job Description for Cover the Uninsured Week 2006 Consultant

GMMB is hiring Consultants to work as Field Organizers for Cover the Uninsured Week 2006, an annual campaign that focuses attention on the growing number of uninsured Americans. The effort is led and managed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care. GMMB, a leading strategic communications firm based in Washington, D.C., is the key organizational contractor responsible for the effort. More information about the campaign is available at Link .Consultants will be hired for a period of approximately four months beginning on or about February 1, 2006. Consultants will be responsible for planning and implementing activities, including, but not limited to, a press conference, a business summit, interfaith outreach and health and enrollment fairs in their communities. The events will be nonpartisan, and will engage the participation of various members and leaders of the community including local representatives of national partner groups; active citizens; uninsured individuals and those affected by the issue of the uninsured; and federal, state and local elected officials from both parties where appropriate. Events will also feature the stories and struggles faced by uninsured community members. Consultants will be tasked with finding and vetting uninsured members of the community for participation in various events and media outreach efforts.
Consultants must have a thorough knowledge of their local market, including, but not limited to, familiarity with the political, business, labor, medical/health care, higher education, philanthropic, African-American, Hispanic and religious communities; the local and statewide media; and other local resources. In addition, it is imperative that Consultants have strong communications experience, including media relations, as one of the key responsibilities of the position will be generating news and editorial attention for the Campaign's efforts.
Consultants must be able to work in a nonpartisan and inclusive manner, and avoid any activities that might be viewed as lobbying or electioneering.
We are interviewing candidates for Consultants in Des Moines, West Palm Beach and Philadelphia.
This is a demanding position that requires the ability to organize and prioritize workflow as well as collaborate with a diverse group of people. Those applying for the position should be outgoing, professional, detail oriented and accomplished public speakers and presenters with proven media relations skills. The nature of the work will require Consultants to work extensive hours during and after normal business hours.
Consultants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
