Move-On's Call for Change - Mission Accomplished !

People Powered Politics - What 3.2 Million Determined MoveOn Members Can Do Changing the national political landscape is a tall order. But if we build on the enormous grassroots energy we saw over the past six months, we know it?s possible. For us, for our families, for our children, for our country, the stakes could hardly be higher.

TAKING BACK THE HOUSE Volunteers made 7 million phone calls, organized 7,500 house parties, and launched 6,000 in-district events. More people volunteered in 2006 than in 2004.

In Florida District 22 Klein vs. Shaw we made 95,899 calls to voters and the margin of victory was 8713 votes.

"Liquid" Phone Bank.Call for Change was the answer. The core idea is fairly simple: a web-based "liquid phone bank" allowing MoveOn members to pour calls from wherever they live into wherever they are needed. We could then turn to any district in the country that needed extra attention, and keep the calls flowing until we reached all of our target voters. We tested our program in April in a California House special election and it worked. A Yale University study showed that our phone bank was the most effective volunteer calling program ever studied. With the theory confirmed, we turned our attention to the larger 2006 campaign. We developed two ways for people to make calls. Individuals could call from home, using a cutting- edge online tool that walks the user through the script and records the results one call at a time. We also launched a weekly series of phone parties, where members gathered together to make calls on their cell phones. To recruit the volunteer army needed to make it work, we worked with our close partner, Grassroots Campaigns, to set up campaign offices in 40 cities. The Florida Call center was located in Fort Lauderdale.  Each night. MoveOn members called other members in their region, asking them to sign up with the campaign. By the end of the program, The Ft. Lauderdale office had over 100 volunteers in to make phone calls, and nationwide recruited over 17,000 other volunteers  to make calls fron thier own homes. Because the program was based online, we were able to use "smart targeting" to direct members' calls to where they would have the highest impact. So volunteers living in or near com petitive districts would automatically be directed to voters in their area. Volunteers in other parts of the country would be directed to whichever districts around the country needed the most urgent attention. The "liquid" internet technology we developed for the phone program made this possible. We also wanted to make sure we were turning out the right voters. So we began an ambitious "micro-targeting"  program, applying a grassroots twist to an approach Republicans have employed so successfully to get their supporters to the polls. Another great advantage was the low number of "bad" phone numbers on the call list, so that the volunteers' time was especially productive.

 Thanks for all you do

Vote No on No.6 ! Yes on Portability !

Constitutional initiative No. 6 to raise the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $50,000 sounds attractive at first glance, but it is not.  It actually shifts the tax burden further from Republican \ rural Florida where property values average around $100,000 to Democratic \ urban south Florida where property values average at just under $300,000.   Didn’t you wonder why this proposal is the same as Charlie Christ's tax "reform" plan?   In typical Republican fashion,  this would give rural republicans a tax break of 50% and urban Democrats a 25% reduction.  Worse though is that the remaining, non homestead,  properties have to make up for the deficit.  These are properties such as rental apartments and small businesses. This year rental properties saw soaring tax increases as their rental units were assessed as if they were condominiums for sale.  The average price of a condominium / Townhome in Broward was $250,532 in September 2006 according to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Association of Realtors [http://www.r-world.com/aboutus/inthenews/salesstats/] which yields an annual property tax of  $4,983 per unit or $415.25 a month!  At the same time average rent on a 2 bedroom is $752.00 a month [http://www.city-data.com/county/Broward_County-FL.html]  making ad valorem tax 55% of the rental revenue.  If taxes on rental properties continue to increase at their present rate, neither landlords, nor tenants will be able  to afford to be in the south Florida rental market.Homesteaded properties are already adequately protected.  Now we need to protect renters and small business owners from run away taxes, not make their burden even heavier !  PLEASE SUPPORT THE PORTABILITY BALLOT QUESTION ON NOVEMBER 7th, 2006.Broward voters will get to voice their support for Save Our Homes "portability" in a November non-binding referendum. Please join Property Appraiser Lori Parrish in supporting adoption of a new constitutional amendment allowing homesteaded owners to move their sheltered Save Our Homes value from one primary residence to the next one in the same county under a governmental “local option.” This concept could provide freedom and tax relief for many families. If you support this idea, vote FOR portability in the November straw ballot ... and send a loud message to the Florida Legislature to place this important constitutional amendment on the 2008 statewide ballot. South Florida primary voter turn out the worst in the State

Written by: Alexander Patrick Johnson on Sep 12, 2006 3:34 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Broward County Democracy for America

Attention South Florida, something drastic is going to have to happen if we expect to take back the governorship!

Turn out in the primary statewide was
2,039,565 out of 10,429,566 or 19.6%

Broward County had the lowest turnout in the state at
116,270 out of 997,174 or 11.7%

Palm Beach 2nd worst in the state had
116,747 out of 779,927 or 15.0%

Dade Miami-Dade 4th worst in the state had
171,488 out of 1,074,424 or 16.0%

Total South Florida 404,505 out of 2,851.343 which means we left 2,446,838 democrats on their asses on election day, which is 29 percent of the 8,390,001 who did not vote statewide

Party Turn out:
856,374 Democrats voted for Governor (42% of the total)
984,381 Republicans voted for Governor (48% of the total)

If we expect to win the governorship something drastic is going to have to happen in the next eight weeks. Go to the Campaign page of the website to search campaign events to participate in. The Klein campaign Broward office is open 7 days a week for phone banking: Monday through Thursday from 11-9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11-7pm for phone banking. The Klein Broward HQ is located at 1440 North Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. Please contact Julie @ 954.941.2965or julie@ronklein2006.com to sign up for a volunteer shift.

or Contact the Jim Davis campaign to volunteer at www.jimdavis2006.com...

You must commit to doing some volunteer work in the next eight weeks or we will loose this one.
