Hey Philly for Changers!

Out here in Montgomery County - a quiet revolution is brewing....

A Democratic revolution.

Rick Taylor, a pro-labor progressive Dem who worked for Paul Wellstone, has a great shot at going to Harrisburg and becoming one of its young leaders.

This Saturday we are trying to get a PHILLY FOR CHANGE INVASION.

Let's get another Dem seat in the state house! We are SO close to a Democratic majority.

PLUS - Rick is also running against a complete sleazeball, a Republican who paid for his house with state funds and wrote a leniency letter that reduces a child molester's sentence - becuase guy's dad gave him campaign contributions.

To canvass, please call Hannah at 267-979-7899
or email me at golden.notebook@gmail.com

Shifts are 10-1 and 2-5.

RSVP at:

What: Suburban Invasion: Rick Taylor!
When: Saturday, October 28, 2006, 10:00 AM

Everything you wanted to know about Philly ward politics but were afraid to ask

Hello Philly for Change!

Last night the Democratic Party met to endorse candidates for the Special Election. Philly for Change took a leadership position in asking that the party not endorse, and open up the process to other candidates to run. To my knowledge, no one has ever done this before.

Although Bob Brady did nominate his candidates - Daniel Savage, Carol Campbell, and Bill Greenlee - I feel that we've done the city a service by shedding some light on what is often a very confusing process - even to city committeepeople.

Marty Moss-Coane devoted an hour on WHYY to the special elections
...and Dave Davies, who has reported on Philadelphia city government for 20-something years, gave one of the best explanations of the ward system that i have EVER HEARD.

ANYBODY WHO CARES ABOUT PHILLY POLITICS SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS SHOW (the link is below). It's a primer on elections and the ward and committees that win elections - or lose them.

It's vital.
Consider it required listening.

----

Radio Times -
Hour One

Is it fair for Philadelphia's democratic party to in-effect anoint the city's next three city council members? Three of Council's 17 seats are open and a special election has been called to fill them. We'll discuss this with DAVE DAVIES, senior writer for The Philadelphia Daily News, STAN SHAPIRO, co-founder of Neighborhood Networks, TERRY GILLEN who is a democratic ward leader in South Philadelphia, and ED SCHWARTZ, a former Philadelphia City Council. Listen to this show via Real Audio

Help out Rick Taylor!

Hey PFC!!!!

Rick Taylor, the Democratic nominee for the state house in the 151st district, needs your help!

It's the same old story: a great progressive kick-ass Dem going up against a very well-funded Republican political machine. Rick is one of the most devoted and honest public servants I have ever met and I really love working for him.

It's a state rep campaign - so we get to do the fun stuff - knocking on doors and getting folks excited. I would love it if you could come volunteer, canvass for a few hours, or even phonebank from home. (We have a lot of calling to do). Rick's district includes Ambler, Lower Gwynedd, and parts of Upper Dublin, Horsham, Montgomery, and Abington. Very pretty in the fall!

There's such a charge in the air this year - so many young, talented dedicated Dems running at once. Rick is one of those stars, and even if you are working on another campaign, I would love to have you out here one Sunday afternoon to canvass, or next Saturday - or next Sunday... you get my drift.

Check us out at www.taylorforpa.com
or call me 267-979-7899.
or email golden.notebook@gmail.com

Thanks!
Hannah

Sock puppets warn of impending doom

Anne Dicker and the Philly for Change Pluppeteers have a message for you:

Philadelphia is in some serious danger.

Within a year, we could have two big fat slots parlors on the Delaware.

Thousands of extra cars a day pouring in... yes, from Jersey.
Pawnshops.
SUVs. Air pollution. Queen Village or Northern Libs could turn into strip malls.

THE STANDARD TAP COULD CLOSE.

And - to educate the public and present a possible alternative future -
Philly for Change presents a dramatic sock puppet show.

Windows Media:

Quicktime:

Watch now before it's too late....

And vote next Tuesday - May 16 - for Anne Dicker for State Rep. - the ONLY candidate in the race with no ties to casino developers.

Stay tuned for more information about casinos - this is our Philadelphia.
This is our riverfront.
It's time we figured out what to do with it.

Take Up Your Calendars, Oh Ye Democrats!

Written by: Hannah Miller on Apr 27, 2006 1:47 AM EDT

Look at your calendars, oh ye progressive Democrats.

Turn your calendars to May 16.
A couple of weeks away.

It's a Tuesday - like any other Tuesday in the world.

What will you be doing that day?

Probably you will be sitting at work - bored, or running around. Taking care of nasty diners - angry customers - frustrating projects - or surfing the web. Or making copies.

But guess what?

You could use that same May 16 to change the course of Philadelphia political history. Yes - I am serious.

Just that one day.
You could do so much good with that one day!

It's primary election day in Philadelphia - and for the first time in decades, a grassroots Democrat without any ties to political machines is making a stand for real people - for our neighborhoods.

DFA prodigy Anne Dicker (www.annedicker.com) is running for state rep - against both a Fumo candidate, and a Dougherty candidate. She is running because she believes in everything that progressives stand for...and she knows that if we show our strength, then we will be able to make our vision of Philadelphia into a reality.

Anne can win this -
but you have to decide what you want to do on May 16.

--

The Dicker campaign is taking volunteers.

Ask for the day off work!
Working E-day is an experience like no other in the world - absolutely crucial political experience.

If you can't take off a whole day, take off half a day - or sponsor someone else to take off, by donating $100 to Anne's campaign fund: http://www.annedicker.co m/contribute

So look at your calendars now - and email me back.

Would you rather make copies on May 16, or would you rather change the world?

I think you know the answer!

I'll see you soon...

all the best,
Hannah Miller

This is THE email, people. The big one.

Hello Philly for Change.

I want you to think about something.

I want you to think about how you would feel if your best friend - the person you respect and love the most - the smartest most sarcastic person you know - turned to you and said, you know, I am thinking about running for office.

OF COURSE, you'd say.
ABSOLUTELY, you'd say.
THANK GOD you'd say.
PEOPLE LIKE YOU
ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE RUNNING FOR OFFICE!

...Well - you know what?
That's happening right now.

Anne Dicker - who joined Philly for Change 3 years ago, read all the emails, wrote the letters, went to the meetings - she is now running for state representative in Pennsylvania.

Yes! One of us! Thirty-two years old!
One of US is running for office! Against machine politicians in Philadelphia!

That is the most amazing thing that could ever happen! Anne is doing it.
That means you could, someday; she is paving the way for us. That was the whole point of what Howard Dean was trying to do.
Getting normal people in power.

Anne could actually win this, but she needs your help. She absolutely can't win this race without Philly for Change.
She's up against some VERY wealthy folks. We have to show them the power of the grassroots.

I need you to volunteer for the campaign.
Preferably THIS WEEKEND.
Any time you can give.
We need volunteers from 12-3 and 3-6, Saturday and Sunday.
We need volunteers from 6-9, Monday-Friday.
We need YOU at campaign headquarters, every day, for the next 5 weeks!
We need you to take off two weeks of work and work as hard as you can on the chance of a lifetime.
- an incumbent retiring
- a distracting machine battle
- #1 ballot position
- last night another candidate dropped out and endorsed Anne

Luck is on our side. Few political opportunities like this ever present themselves.

This race is winnable, but only if you step up.
We only have a month to knock on 1,000 doors.

So seriously. Email me, or better yet - call! 267-979-7899. I am coordinating the volunteers for her campaign and I need to see you this Saturday, or Sunday. It doesn't matter if you live in her district or not. We need you.

We are going to send Philly for Change to take a seat in Harrisburg.

We are going to do it.

But we're going to have to work together.

I'll see you this weekend.

deadly seriously,
Hannah

Yes - it's true!
Philly for Change has a brand spankin' new website:

Link

Smarter,
friskier,
more dangerous...
More than you ever thought you'd find in a grassroots
progressive website.

Yes, our new Philly for Change website has links, press clips, updates on what we're up to, agendae from past Meetups, and even a Santorum Countdown Timer!

It's rather raw right now but we will be adding a photo gallery soon, plus endorsement pages as the year progresses...GOTV info...plus a lot of other cool secret stuff I can't tell you about just yet.
Sorry.

Philly for Change has been around almost 3 years now - if you're a new member, you can go back and read the clips from the Dean days and see how this whole thing got started.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, I will be glad to hear them.

And bookmark!

more later,
Hannah
