LOCAL ACTION CALENDAR
September 18, MONDAY, 8:30pm, General meeting, peak oil discussion, solid waste workshop I, St Paul's United Methodist Church, 42 S 4th St, enter through side door.
September 19, Tuesday, 11:30-1pm, League of Women Voters Forum, at La Primavera restaurant. Shawn McLaughlin to offer a presentation on the Comprehensive Plan for Union County. Buffet lunch is served for a price of $10. The public is invited. Email longley@bucknell.edu for further info.
September 22, Friday, 1-4pm, Home Energy Audit workshop and demonstration for contractors to be presented by SEDA-COG at the Union County Office Building on 15th St in Lewisburg. Pre-registration required. Call 522.8159 for more information. Please let any contractors you know of who might be interested. A personal invitation is the most effective way to get people there. We really need to help get the local construction community become aware of basic concepts about the benefits of efficiency and conservation. Demand is growing, but supply continues to lag.
September 22, Friday, 7-9pm, New Apollo Energy Act Public Rally at the Lewisburg Club. This is a political event, with a speaker, Jay Inslee (D-WA) who will present information about the House bill that he is cosponsoring on clean energy, alternative fuels and better jobs. Local democratic candidates, Steve Connolley and Chris Carney, will also be present to show their support for these efforts. For information on the New Apollo Energy project, please visit www.apolloalliance.org/... . We could go and ask questions about appropriate technology and voice the concern that we not just imagine we are replacing Big Oil with Big Something Else.
September 22-23, Friday-Saturday, PA Alternative Energy and Sustainable Living Festival, Kempton. So far a couple of people are interested in attending this. Seems accessible, proven and interesting. Let me know if you might go as well.
September 22-24, Friday-Sunday, 3rd US Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions, Yellow Springs, OH. No one has stepped forward to attend this one. It is likely _very_ relevant. Let me know if it could fit your schedule. See me for copy of June Harper's article that might shed some light on the proceedings. I can email a 1M pdf of the article.
September 23, Saturday, 7:30am (registration) through 5:30pm (reception), Conference on the Susquehanna: From the Branches to the Confluence, Langone Center, second floor, Bucknell, email me for complete schedule and registration info. The BU Environmental Center is planning the conference in cooperation with the Susquehanna River Heartland Coalition for Environmental Studies, which includes colleges and universities in the region, Geisinger Medical Center, and representatives from local nonprofit and government agencies. The purposes of the conference are to discuss the components that should go into an annual State of the River report, showcase key initiatives, and promote further collaboration between area universities, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to improve the health of the watershed and its communities.
September 26, Tuesday, 8:30pm, possible work session.
September 26-November 14, Tuesdays, 7pm, "Choices for Sustainable Living" discussion group to meet. Location tbd. See www.nwei.org for more info. If you can't make this time, but already know you're interested in the next round to start in late January and run through mid-March, let me know -- that way you can be in on determining a suitable day and time for the sessions. And if you don't know yet whether you're interested, there will be another Introductory Presentation in early January. Other possible titles to run soon include Exploring Deep Ecology and Healthy Children, Healthy Planet, depending on enrollment.
October 3, Tuesday, 7pm Sierra Club Executive Committee meeting, First Baptist Church Library, South 3rd St.
October 7, Saturday, 9am-noon, Lewisburg Area Progressive Summit, location tbd.
October 10, Tuesday, 8:30pm, possible work session.
October 14th, Saturday, Philly Beyond Oil Conference for Local Solutions, Philadelphia. We don't have anyone planning to attend at this point. Let me know if you might be able to check it out.
October 14-15, Saturday-Sunday, Green Festival, DC. I am likely to be down there anyway and will try to get there. It's probably more commercial than substantive, I'm guessing.
October 16, MONDAY, 8:30pm General meeting, Energy Workshop, "First Steps: conservation and efficiency, Leveraging local know how," assessing personal steps and considering how they lead to collective local action. Location tba.
October 17, Tuesday, 11:30-1pm, League of Women Voters Forum, at La Primavera Restaurant. Greg Weitzel from LARA and a representative from Central Keystone Council of Governments will speak on regional cooperation. Buffet lunch is served for a price of $10. The public is invited. Email longley@bucknell.edu for further info.
October 24, Tuesday, 3:45-5pm, Julian Darley, founder and director of the Postcarbon Institute will deliver the closing plenary at the 2006 Pennsylvania Planning Association Conference in Harrisburg. The talk is entitled "The Great Transition: Moving to a Post Carbon World." Afterwards they will screen End of Suburbia. Attendance is possible and free, but will require letting PPA know in advance so they are prepared for us. If you are interested in going down to Harrisburg for it, please let me know. For the complete conference brochure, go to www.planningpa.org/conference06_...
October 26, Thursday, 7:30pm, Sustainable Communities Lecture in the Langone Center Forum at Bucknell. Ed McMahon, author of the book Better Models for Development in Pennsylvania: Ideas for Creating More Livable and Prosperous Communities, will be speaking on creating, maintaining, and enhancing livable communities. He will explore how new development can be made more attractive, efficient, profitable, and environmentally sensitive.
November 4, Saturday, 9-3, Otzinachson Group of the Sierra Club strategic planning retreat in Herndon. Email me if you are interested.
November 14, Tuesday, 11:30-1pm, League of Women Voters Forum, at La Primavera Restaurant. Peter Wilshusen, head of Bucknell University's Environmental College, will discuss the environmental impacts of sprawl. Buffet lunch is served for a price of $10. The public is invited. Email longley@bucknell.edu for further info.
November 20, Monday, 8:30pm, General Meeting, tentative topic: Consumerism and Alternative Gift Giving ahead of the holidays. Location tbd.
December 18, Monday, 8:30pm, General Meeting, tentative topic: Wish Lists, what kinds of information would be most useful to the community? Location tbd.
