Local, State and National Success

Written by: Marie Taylor on Nov 14, 2006 2:17 PM EST

This was our first experience working an election, enjoyable but exhausting.  Though we are both retired, we are still active in community governance and safety, as well as some activities for our health and pleasure.  The result was that our commitment was limited to yard signs and working election day.

We volunteered to help staff the Cayuga Democratic Office on Nov. 7, so started in early, taking people to the polls.  When the need became heavier, others stepped in, and I manned the phones.  At 11:00 AM, we went to our own rural polling area to act as election watchers, keeping track of the Democrats who had voted by 2:30.  Those who did not vote early were called to remind them of the opportunity to make their wishes known.

Democrats were successful!  From State Senator, Governor and State Offices, to our Congressional Representative, to local sheriff and judges, all were Democrats.  In our district, the Sate Senator, Republican, had no opponent, and the State Representative won by  a 60%-40% margin.  That was the best showing we've seen against this candidate in 8 years, so we were heartened.  (His occupation is as Undertaker, so he is known all over the county.)

Will we do it again?  God willing, yes!!!!!
