If you want to learn more about about biofuels you may find the October 2007 print edition of National Geographic Magazine worth buying or perusing at the library.  It contains a very balanced article on biofuel production (ranging from corn based ethanol through algae).  You will also find a short essay by renowned environmental journalist Bill McKibben on wedge strategies to seriously reduce CO2 emissions.

If you don't have access the print magazine, you can find the biofuels article and an interactive comparison of the various biofuels available online:

To: All concerned       From: Cliff Day

I managed to visit some of the alternative energy events that took place in Iowa in September and will attempt to report on them separately.

One of these events was the University of Iowa Energy Expo which was held on campus on September 5. Jounalist Adam Burke of the Iowa Independent captured concise videos of the main speakers, Billy Parish and Hunter Lovins, so I'll refer you to Adam's article:

The 15th annual Energy Expo will be held this weekend, September 9 & 10, at Solon High School in Solon, Iowa. The theme for this year's Energy Expo is "Energizing Iowa's Communities". An admission fee of $5.00 will be charged for individuals, or $10.00 for a family. A complete eight page guide to the Energy Expo workshops and speakers is provided for downloading and printing at: www.irenew.org/images/expoguide....

The guide is comprehensive and includes a workshop schedule grid and driving map (Solon is located approximately 10 miles north of Iowa City on Highway 1.) For additional information, visit the Iowa Renewable Energy Association web site: http://www.irenew.org/ or call (319) 341-4372.

OK, so why should you consider attending Energy Expo this weekend?

Well, if you're thinking about making your residence more energy efficient, or planning a major remodeling effort, or anticipating building or buying a new home---you may find workshops such as "Energy Rehab for Existing Homes", "How to Build an Energy Efficient Home", "Buy an Energy Efficient Home", "Passive Solar Home Design", and several others to be well worth your time. You can expect to hear some ideas that will save you big bucks as you plan and build your project.

If you're interested in learning the basics of alternative energy and energy conservation technologies---you may find "Overview of Geo Exchange (Geothermal) Technology", "Basics of Putting up a Wind Turbine", and "Introduction to Photovoltaics", "Making Your Own Biodiesel" and several other introductory workshops helpful.

Finally, if you're interested in the controversial energy policy issues that vex the Midwest and the nation---you may want to take in the presentations "Our Energy Future Isn't What It Used to Be", "Future of Renewable Fuels in Iowa" and "Can We Power Iowa with 100% Renewables?"

There will also be numerous vendors in attendance, an abundance of displays, and programs specifically intended for children.

I'll look forward to seeing you at Energy Expo!

Ed Fallon's Speech Following the June 6 Iowa Primary

Written by: Clifford Day on Jun 15, 2006 2:36 AM EDT

Friends,

From Ed Fallon's web site - a transcript of his speech during his neighborhood party following the June 6 Iowa Primary.

-Cliff Day

**********

Here is a transcript of Ed Fallon's speech from Tuesday night's party:

This is not exactly a concession speech, My concession is that our sound permit expires at 11 o'clock. And I know a lot of people are getting tired and we want to make sure that we respect not only the sound permit but people's schedules. This is a work day, tomorrow is, and people will need to be getting up and going to work.

You know what? They never thought we'd do this good, they never thought we'd do this good. I can't remember which reporter it was it might have been the Register -- it was actually several reporters, but I remember they predicted that I might get five or ten percents.

What they don't understand is there are a lot of people across Iowa, across this state, who are very dissatisfied with the status quo. They know that big money has become a big problem and they know we have to do big, big things in order to change that. They keep saying that politics is all about big money and big name endorsements. I really believe that it's about big ideas and a big coalition of people, a lot of constituencies that have not had a voice in government in a long, long time, We're going the change that.

Even if we lose tonight, we have sent a very, very powerful message that things cannot continue the way they are going in Iowa. Corporate powers and specials interests with their PACs and lobbyists and their big donors have controlled the state government for a long time. They've been controlling it since I got elected 14 years ago and it's gone from bad to worse. It must change. We cannot continue to see the direction we're going continue.

If you look at the budget every year there are more tax breaks for the wealthy and special interests. There's more corporate giveaways and less money for our schools, continually ignoring the healthcare crisis, continually ignoring the environment; the things we care about continually being ignored. That must change and it will change and we're sending a message that we have the power to do that.

I will say this, whatever happens tonight, this fight is not over and I am not done fighting. When I reflect on the start of this campaign, the start of this campaign was driving to Decorah, Luther College, to give a talk on land use, October 25, 2002.

I got the news that Paul Wellstone had been killed in a plane crash, and that just really hurt because Paul was one of our most powerful, effective, progressive voices in Congress. And I realized that the guy, Wellstone, had gone from being a college professor to being a U.S. Senator, beating an incumbent, running and being outspent 6 to 1.

If Paul could do that than a progressive ought to be elected governor of Iowa and u.s. senator and even if it aint't gonna happen tonight, it is going to happen because our voices are the majority voice in this state. I believe that. I believe that very strongly.

I explain that because I know that many of you tonight are not Democrats, and if you are Democrats you are disenfranchised Democrats who have not participated in a long time.

I had one of my supporters tonight tell me he had quickly registered Democrat to vote in the primary and then as quick as possible registered back because he did not want to be a democrat. The point is that what we're doing here tonight is not partisan. What we are doing here tonight"¦ this is I believe the majority voice in the state.

My concern is there were a lot of folks who were worried about beating Jim Nussle so they might have supported Chet Culver or Mike Blouin. I think if all the folks who really agreed with our message had supported us, we would have won by over 50 percent of the vote.

I want to make sure whoever wins this nomination beats Jim Nussle, we have to outmuscle Jim Nussle. But I know full well that whoever wins the nomination is going to need the support of the people here tonight and the tens of thousands across the state who support our message and our mission. They're going to have to be part of the solution if we're going to beat Jim Nussle. So whoever wins the nomination is going take us very very seriously.

I want to recognize my staff. How many of my staff is still standing tonight. How many of you are volunteers? How many of you donated? Even some folks who are very financially strapped went out of their way to donate significant amounts of money and time and that's very much appreciated. I mean, nobody thought we'd raise nearly half million bucks and we did it; no PAC money, no lobbyist money, all from individuals.
