Positive Focus for Progressive Democrats - Meet Basic Needs

Written by: Terry Campbell on Feb 26, 2006 10:53 AM EST

Those of you attending our January and February 2006 meetings may have noticed that I am in search of a positive message from democrats. Our discussions in these two meetings have helped me find a positive message that should appeal to most progressive democrats. Holly Johnson's articulation of that positive message in our February 2006 meeting provided my theme. Progressive democrats are focused on the basic human needs of all people.

Most people will recognize that all people share some basic needs such as food, shelter and basic healthcare. Some will say that each of us should be responsible for taking care of ourselves and our family and friends. On occasion, though, individual circumstances result in our inability to meet these basic needs.

I believe progressive democrats would generally agree that a government of the people and for the people should ensure these basic needs are met. Many of the social programs and the push for some form of universal healthcare are indications of the progressive influence on our governments.

Unfortunately, current mainstream politics tends to focus more on a favorable business environment that should create the potential for people to be employed so they can meet their own basic needs. For those 'few' unfortunates that do not realize this potential, faith-based and other charities are supposed to meet their needs.

I believe we can make a case at all levels of government for ensuring basic needs are met. We as citizens should be able to band together to ensure basic needs are met through our governments. Government is our tool; it is not the enemy.
