Sept 19 DF14 Linkup Minutes

Written by: Carolyn Shannon on Sep 19, 2006 10:48 PM EDT

SEPTEMBER:
-> Here is a summary of Tuesday night's DF14 linkup:
* 7 people attended.

- We introduced ourselves and talked about the various activities each of us have been doing to support candidates and our county-wide ballot integrity project. There have been a flurry of fundraisers to attend. Most present have been walking precincts to support local candidates; members present updated the group on how the various campaigns are going. Martha Hannah noted that she has been doing significant organizational work on behalf of Kane County Clerk candidate Annie Collins. Those present noted exceptional collaborative support among the candidates.

- Steve Bruesewitz updated the group on the eSlate voting machine issue. The County Clerk recently hired temporary workers to remove the chips on the new eSlate voting machines and replace them. Martha noted it was in the newspaper. Steve asked the ISBE and a local Board member about it; the Board member didn't know anything about it. Steve noted that his wife went to the County Board meeting and asked them about it, but the Board members didn't know about it. We talked about action steps and the importance of transparency in elections. Several members discussed the party's election-day poll monitoring plan. Members agreed it was troubling that the Board members didn't know about it. The members agreed to bring this up at the next Kane Dems meeting, and Steve will write a letter to the editor.

- Carolyn talked about precinct management software options, including Advokit and Pro-D. The group discussed managing data as regards to upcoming tasks like literature drops, including how to work through a walk list to get literature to the most likely voters.

- Hal and Carolyn mentioned party commercials they recently participated in.

- There was a discussion of the upcoming screening this Friday of An Inconvenient Truth at the local theater to benefit IL Senate candidate Frank Craig.

- Lois initiated a discussion regarding canvassing techniques, especially in apartment buildings, group homes for the elderly and other restricted-access type apartment buildings.

- Carolyn briefed the group on the new DFI organizational structure.

- Next month will focus on GOTV for early voters, preparing for election day monitoring, and ongoing literature drops.
