What's wrong with Florida?

Written by: Larry Thorson on Nov 14, 2006 1:37 PM EST

We're not Kansas, but this is a pretty tough nut, this Florida. In fact, we could be considered worse than Kansas since Kansans have a Democratic governor and I understand they ousted their school board. Florida got a Republican governor again and only made limited moves toward the progressive side. I personally feel defeated because I worked for a losing Congressional campaign, and we still have Republican majorities in both houses of the state legislature. The vested interests also passed the referendum making the state constitution harder to change by referendum. It's hard to feel good about the state situation, though the national scene is heartening.

This is the third or fourth most populous state. It deserves better than Bushes. It deserves progressive successes. I hope to see concentration on Florida from DFA and other progressive organizations. We need the best advice possible on how to recruit and hold people to work for victory in '08.

People have to be found who will make time for an entire election cycle of work. This could mean only retired people like me, but we have to bring the younger generation into the picture strongly so that they will campaign and run for office even if they're working and raising a family.
