A Doctor's Perspective on "SiCKO"
Linked to groups: Hanover Township Democrats & Independents (HanDI)
If you are not yet sick of "SiCKO," you may be interested in reading a short article in the July 23, 2007 edition of the New Yorker by Atul Gawande, a physician and regular contributor to the magazine. In it, Gawande states that the U.S. health care system is indeed deplorable, but that blame cannot be laid on the concept of private insurance per se, since some other countries (such as Israel, Switzerland and the Netherlands) also have for-profit health insurance, yet manage to achieve universal coverage -- at a lower cost than the U.S. and with better health outcomes.
Here is the link to the article online:

Yeah, IMO ole repub Mitt (my ex-governor here in MA) just continues to embarrass himself and Americans in general with his antics.
I'm so glad Mitt decided not to run for reelection in MA (he saw the hand-writing on the wall and knew he didn't stand a chance at getting reelected; even most repubs in MA have come to dislike what he has done and failed to do in MA, he even left his repub Lt Governor Kerry Healey high and dry by not really supporting her in her run versus dem Deval Patrick -- ie. I guess it would have been kind of hard to support her whilst he was bashing the state of MA in his quest for run for President)
chilimac wrote "Hell, if Dennis took the gloves off and the format were conducive(fair)...he could wipe the floor with both of them i believe."
It would be a titanic clash. Three candidates who were for one policy position before they were against it. For Clinton and Edwards, the Iraq invasion and for Kucinich, laws restricting abortion.

It is a well-known fact that the most annoying noises get the most attention. Every 2-year-old knows that.
Well, you can at least say you're good at something.
It would be a titanic clash. Three candidates who were for one policy position before they were against it. For Clinton and Edwards, the Iraq invasion and for Kucinich, laws restricting abortion.
Touche!
There's only one way to change America: together. There's only one way to make history: together.
And I'm so proud to have you by my side as we take our country back after six and a half years of cronyism and corruption, incompetence and deception.
Every "You go girl!" and "Give em Hill!", every letter of support you've sent, every dollar you've contributed, every friend you've recruited, every blog you've written, every house party you've attended, every petition you've signed, every time you've shown your support, every one of these things is the heart and soul of my campaign.
To put it simply: I owe the success of my campaign to each and every one of you. And to the skeptics who doubt the strength of our grassroots community, I say you've proven them wrong.
Now I want to share an astonishing -- and humbling -- number: 981,440. That's how many of you have supported my campaign for change.
Let's get to a million supporters.
Sign up your family and friends and coworkers. Have them sign up theirs. Tell them we're about to reach a million strong. Tell them we're making history together. And the person who is our one millionth supporter -- along with one of our current supporters, like you -- will travel with me and my team on the campaign trail to roll up our sleeves for a whirlwind day.
Click here to send a message to your friends urging them to sign up, or to sign up if you haven't yet joined the campaign.
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/onemillion
Here's why reaching one million supporters is so crucial: because working together, there's nothing we can't achieve. It takes strength and experience to bring about change -- and it also takes cooperation. With your help, my campaign has come so far and now with your help we'll have the resources we need to win. I've told my campaign to come up with the strongest field program ever created, and I know you are a key part of that effort.
That's why we need you to ask everyone you know to join the campaign today: friends, family, coworkers -- everyone in your email address book! Visit our "One Million" page today:
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/onemillion
I know you're with me every step of the way -- I see you on the campaign trail, at rallies and diners, house parties and town halls. It makes such a difference knowing I have such incredible support. Thank you for everything you do, and let's hit that one million goal!
Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Fred,
You are replacing one named Oler day by day and not a title or reputation i would be proud of........now, as far a me goes, id say a vast majority know me well enough since 2003 and my meaning...............quite simply, I represent a voter that is fracturing away from BOTH major parties...........i am very proud of myself, after working for Dean and the democrats to replace that horrible disease named Bush............we failed sadly.............
Now, after watching what the remaining democratic candiates have been spouting off since 2004 I figured it was time to seek an Indpendent status and I am comfortable with that............I wont fight for a party or people that are only kidding themslves form the inevitable..................
Notice, out of al the bloggers here, it is YOU that refer to me as Troll..........thats OK.......but most know the differance however...............if i were you and the Democratic party I would be very scared of the many disgruntled democrats ANd republicans out there..........yes even republicans........it is out of this smoldering fire of disconent that a true viable candidate will emerge someday...................and THATS worth fighting for.
Of course Hillary counts me in that number because I clicked on her link so I can keep up with the campaign.

But wait, they were dumb enough to switch to Kerry in 04.

Some people have complained that they have written or phoned congressional offices to express their views favoring impeachment and gotten no response or a canned response – a form letter or a blah-blah-de-blah reply from an aide – regarding their concerns. Or that they’ve gotten a flat no. OK. Surrender? Despair? Or onto the next step? I vote for the latter.
The perfect time to catch your Representative (and Senators) face to face is now, when they'll be making more visits home than any time of the year except the winter holidays. They'll be speaking publicly at numerous venues, and you (and others) can be in attendance repeatedly, relentlessly questioning them and urging them to take action. You can urge them to send John Conyers a letter saying they think now’s the time. If your Representative is one of the Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee, your persuasive efforts will be far more pivotal than those of us who live in other districts, because if your Rep calls for impeachment hearings it means more than a similar call by 90% of the other Democrats.
This kind of politicing requires a lot more commitment than writing a letter, or writing a screed, or showing up at a protest march, and not everyone, of course, can afford to travel to district offices or other venues to do this. But those who can afford the time and who feel strongly enough – certainly passion does not seem in short supply – should do what they can as many times as they can to come face-to-face with their Rep and Senators. Letters and e-mails are easy to ignore. Constituents in person far less so. Particularly polite, well-informed, insistent constituents with a well-honed, message that is carefully crafted ahead of time to knock down any objections.
I plan to work on my Congressman in this regard, and on Iraq withdrawal, every time I get the opportunity.
Let me make myself clear once more. I enjoy a good rant against the powers-that-be as much as the next person. But at this late date, ranting won’t move impeachment one millimeter closer to reality.

BTW, trolling describes an action, it is what you do, not what you are.
Worth fighting for...? Paul McCartney once said that about Afghanistan, did the only rock concert for war that I ever saw. Another turncoat.
FRED is only obnoxious because he wants to be engaged with. Some people, like me, don't want to be in the interactive mode and that's perhaps frustrating for those who do.
So, a thank you from me to those generous souls who give FRED feed-back. It relieves me from having to feel guilty when I ignore him.

This stunt was so stupid that it makes me doubt he's a serious candidate--more like a participant in an oppo project.
After all, there were at least two pictures combined into one. It takes time to get two pictures, from different angles and with the individual not holding and then holding the sign.
One picture is happenstance; two is a planned event.

Agreed, but isn't ole Mitt so photogeneic ? That smile, that parted hair.
Since Robert no longer posts here, attacking him in his absense is not appropriate.

Healthcare should indeed be a major issue concerning our country especially. We need to find a way to help our poor to have access to resources that are for their basic survival, especially if they are injured. This also brings up debate on what role that Americans need to take on Global Poverty. The top 1% of the world's richest people earn as much as the poorest 57%. This is startling.

You don't have to be right wing on the occupation or a blue dog to be like Robert. Robert Oler actually had some left wing crudentials. He was for universal health care.
Mike and John are more critical than he was of the party, and with more biting contempt. Claiming to be on the Left does not does not automatically make one a good Democrat.
It reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when his dentist converts to Judaism so he call tell Jewish jokes without being called an anti-semite.
Robert Oler never advocated third party spinoffs on the Left. Democrats are not perfect. I left the party a few times but if I left the party today, I would not be blogging here, advocating for other to abandon the party.
At least I have that much integrity. And as frustrating as Oler was, neither did he.

From the Gov.
People-powered politics means more than low-dollar contributions. Together we've demonstrated how much power people have when they connect with one another in their own communities. We did it in 2004 to change the way campaigns run. We did it in 2006 to take back Congress. And now, in 2007, we're going to work as a team to clean up our own communities.
On July 28th, take an afternoon to clean up a park. Plant a tree. Hold a recycling drive. And while you're there, talk to your neighbors, make new friends, and start planting the seeds for a Democratic victory in 2008.
Will you host or attend a Democratic Reunion for a cleaner country on July 28th?
http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReuni...
The Democratic Party can do more than raise money and push voters to the polls. When tens of thousands of Democrats come together to say that enough is enough, everybody listens.
Democrats are fighting to bring our troops home. We're fighting to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to give American workers a voice. We're fighting to pass the Higher Education Act and make a college education affordable for everyone. We're fighting to enact the 9/11 Commission recommendations to make our country safer at home.
And we're fighting to make our country a cleaner, healthier place for our kids and grandkids.
Find an event in your hometown, or plan one on your own:
http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReuni...
Last year, the Democratic Party held canvassing events in every state. Then we took it a step further, putting permanent organizers on the ground in all 50 states to build a party that can truly compete everywhere. Those organizers were key to our people-powered victory in 2006, and they'll be key to our victory in 2008.
Now we're putting our organization to the test. We want to see how many people we can turn out, not to knock on doors, but to clean up our towns.
I hope you'll be part of it.
Sincerely,
Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

Hope for Contempt charges Wed. and start of something big, in the meantime here are my thoughts on exec. privilege:
I assume that to qualify the idea of inalienable rights of the people,
and the justifiable right of oversight, one must confess that we are
common children living on equal soil.
Children who shared similar dreams at night and fantasies by day, of
what life would hold in store. Children who inadvertently grew up and
wished the same, if not better, prospects for their own children.
Could we have imagined that we'd now have less freedom to offer, and a
worse outlook for America? An America corrupted by monopolized
business and media, where the poor go off to fight so our so-called
leadership's stock will improve by a percentage point.
An America where we can now be locked up without reason, and where the
possibility of our vote being impartially counted is less likely now
than it has been since the era of reconstruction.
To quote the esteemed poet Asha Bandele's "Habeas Corpus is a Legal
Entitlement":
"where are the warriors
where are the truth tellers
where are the fearless dragons
where are the life creators/the life sustainers
the singers of the songs of liberation"
I don't know about you, but I intend to fight for my political
survival. If only this was purely about politics. More is at stake
now. Much more than right over left, or conservative government
instead of progressive government.
This here is a dilemma of natural right, of natural fact.
America is no longer a nation. It is a brand. America Inc. with its
CEO at the helm, ruling from an undisclosed location. In that lair are
human sized safes packed to the brim with detailed "consumer reports"
on every once unbound American person's private life. Details obtained
without warrant or precedent.
But if we, the American people, the constituent, the consumer, the
buyer of lies concocted by a handful of Ivy League business majors,
want info on the American corporation's secret dealings – that keep us
in proverbial bondage – we get tap-danced upon by the smirking
wonder-boy show trust of his father's company.
Patrick Henry once demanded, "Give me liberty, or give me death."
Disregard liberty. Liberty, in any true sense of the word, has seen
its time pass by in a crowd like that of a familiar face from long
ago.
All I stand to demand is why we as the consumer are being forced to
buy a product that is killing us, and killing the dreams of our children.
I know as a man without credentials, connection, or credence I cannot
sit face to face with our "acting" president and ask why.
That, given the vast the size of the country, and the scheduling
crunch it would ensue, would be impossible to hope for. But now that -
for the first time in the history of the republic – my own elected
representative isn't to be allowed to ask that question to our
president, our monarch, one must conclude we've reached a critical
precipice.
And all this because of privilege.
As if it all makes sense now, a privileged child, who dreamed dreams
unlike our own, would grow up one day to invoke the very word that
sums up his entire career, and the world as if it were never meant to
be free.
Privilege. Whether subsequent to the word executive, or corporate, or
military, or royal, it has the same meaning.
Have we really marched thousands of miles, crossed spans of ocean,
fought hundreds of battles against countless foes, given millions of
speeches, punched billions of votes, and dreamed trillions of dreams
for this? One family's privilege.
You should have opted for death, my dear Patrick, for your effort was
wasted, and your words were spent in vain. Just as mine will be.
If they are not to be, we must fight, and I'm talking to you, be it
however as we may. Through letter, sign, call, marches, tongue or
fist.
For whatever reason, this isn't over for some of us. Not hardly. Not
by far. We refuse to conform to the saline prescriptions of American
industry, that induce apathy.
For whatever reason, be it Habeas Corpus, fired attorneys, war
profiteering, pollution, negligence, spying, vote tampering,
government sponsored racism, or intentional lies.
Those are but individual arrows in a barrage that pierced the warm
hearts of a once promising America where liberty was more than just a
word engraved on a statue or coin.
Once upon a time we had an idea, and held it high with honor, now it
is but mere memory to be whispered into the ear of the child of that
familiar face as they pass by in the crowd, and maybe one day that
idea will fill the child's dreams and bring liberty back. If there's
any of it left to bring back.
Our own constitution lies in a coffin in the National Archives, our own
free spirit sparked again in the 60s overdosed on government
subsidized drugs.
What's left of us is confined now to eat T.V. dinners and vote on faux
reality contests.
And when your children one day ask you why you're so distant,
restrained, and but a shell of the person you once were, and why every
now and then you break down into tears for no apparent reason,
remember to tell them it's because of July 2007 when we finally had it
engrained in our skulls that there will always be a privilege for a
fortunate one who fancies themselves better than us.
America evolved to its present state at great cost, but was it worth it?
As you step out on the street today, many individuals you encounter
will either not know about the injustice going on, or not care enough
about it to act.
There are some though.
They are HERE and they are out there. They are spread out, in the
deserts of New Mexico, the corn-horizon plains of Iowa, on the ocean
coast of Oregon, and the lakeshores of Illinois. They are in the
tar-trekked foothills of North Carolina, and on top the rocky
mountains of California.
Those that care are in bigger abundance than had been previously
realized. And maybe, just maybe, July 2007 won't be long remembered as
the month of privilege and the beginning of democracy's demise, but as
the dawning of a new day when those of us – spread out – heard the
call, took heed, and became one united force. A force that stormed the
ramparts of what was to be the last privileged and inherently corrupt
American government.
So where is Democracy for America is all this?
We are the bugler sounding that call.
"They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope with so
formidable an adversary. But when shall we be stronger? Will it be the
next week, or the next year?
Sir, we are not weak, if we make proper use of the means which the God
of nature hath placed in our power."

The outlaw president outlaws all war protest
Online Journal | July 23, 2007
Jerry Mazza
I protest, as of the very first line of Bush's July 17 “ Executive Order ” (meaning not necessarily read or approved by Congress). I protest this “Order,” which itself is in flagrant violation of the Bill of Rights and the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States , which guarantees the right to freedom of speech, the press, and to protest, despite the fact that that right has been violated by various courts in various eras in contentious situations like the one we have today.
I protest also that the Bush “Order” sanctions its own unconstitutionality by invoking the Constitution for its enforcement in the first line: “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America.” Remember the Constitution is the document Bush called “just a goddamned piece of paper,” as he went forth to dismiss the right of habeas corpus and fought for renewal of the illegal USAPATRIOT Act .

Bush's Martial Law Plan Is So Shocking, Even Congress Can't See it
Executive über alles as member of Homeland Security Committee barred from viewing post-terror attack provisions
Prison Planet
Monday, July 23, 2007
President Bush's post-terror attack martial law plan is so shocking that even sitting members of Congress and Homeland Security officials are barred from viewing it, another example of executive über alles and a chilling portent of what is to come as constant reminders of the inevitability of terror attacks reverberate.
Congressman Peter DeFazio (D - OR) was asked by his constituents to see what was contained within the classified portion of the White House's plan for operating the government after a terrorist attack.
Since DeFazio also sits on the Homeland Security Committee and has clearance to view classified material, the request would have appeared to be routine, but the Congressman was unceremoniously denied all access to view the documents, and the White House wouldn't even give an excuse as to why he was barred.
"I just can't believe they're going to deny a member of Congress the right of reviewing how they plan to conduct the government of the United States after a significant terrorist attack," DeFazio told the Oregonian on Friday.
"We're talking about the continuity of the government of the United States of America," DeFazio says. "I would think that would be relevant to any member of Congress, let alone a member of the Homeland Security Committee."
"Maybe the people who think there's a conspiracy out there are right," DeFazio concluded.
