Darcy Burner Didn't Beat Dave Reichert
There were two of us helping on the Darcy Burner campaign on November 7. We were assigned to go door to door in a precinct in North Bend in east King County, however, flooding in this area shut down our polling station and moved. Since the polling station was moved, we took the location of the new polling station and opted to phone all of the people left on the list indicated as not yet voting (since King County is vote by mail, most of the people listed had already voted). We figured we could use the information about where people could vote as a public service to contact everyone via phone.
The two of us were able to contact all of the people on the list, about half of them we just left messages, some of them appreciated being told where they could vote, only one person hung up, although one person remarked that she had been contacted by so many Burner people they were turned off and weren't voting for her (possible victims of Republican robocalling?). Given the horrible weather and flooding, I think the option of calling people was the most effective.
As my final chore of the day, I made a stop at a retirement center to pick up some folks to drive them to the polling station; I only had one person show up, but I think more people would have come with more advanced notice. Stopping by the retirement home is a good way to get people to the polls, but it needs to be planned by providing advanced notice (the lady I gave a ride to was very appreciative).
The voting results have just been posted, Darcy Burner was close but Reichert held on to his lead (Even after word got out that when Bush was here stumping for Reichert, a Medina protester had machine guns pointed at her because she had a sign saying: "Liar lair, pants on fire!").
My DFA Summit training was used to try to train other folks in my area (Not being an adequate replacement for Arshad Hasan, I doubt it was that helpful), but it did help introduce me to the concepts needed for canvassing.
