Getting the Message Across

Written by: John Boettner on Feb 2, 2007 6:08 PM EST

On November 7th, Americans took action using the only means at their disposal to send a unified message to our elected representatives. If they are like me, the citizens who voted truly care for their country are witnessing a lunatics-burning-down-the-asylum reality show, but watching it from a distance as an audience helpless to intervene.

Not only have Americans been unscrupulously swept into an illegitimate conflict, we are now in even more danger of waging much more needless death and destruction on innocents.  And this new conflict will be at the expense of a patriotic but exhausted, tattered, overused military, a military once again forced into action on the flimsiest of intelligence (intelligence compromised for the sake of partisan politics).  Given these circumstances, it is incomprehensible how this President has the audacity to tell Americans they have to sacrifice for this bogus conflict, and then manacling the financial crisis he is forcing onto future generations.

There are far too many destructive resources at this President’s disposal to allow continuance of this mindless policy of tolerance; for the first time in my life, I desperately fear worldwide devastation this “Commander-In-Chief” can unleash on the nation and world.  Perhaps it would make a difference if the burden of proof were placed on all branches of congress (plus the media), requiring them to distinguish themselves from elements that collaborated with this Administration’s tyrannical pursuit of religious Armageddon.

At minimum, Congress needs to investigate the following:

  • Events leading up to 9/11.
  • The Katrina response.
  • NSA wire tapping of Americans.
  • Extraordinary rendition, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and other black ops prisons.
  • The underpinnings of a “war on terror” where an eyelash hasn’t even been raised towards the country of the perpetrators of 9/11, when in fact we are shutting down military bases in that country.
  • Investigate the origins of manpower and materials allegedly being imported to the Iraq insurgent efforts, and claiming the source is exclusively from Iran.
The United States needs to show the world that the system of checks and balances built into our democracy maintain stability. It is vital that the U.S. congress use the power of the purse, impeachment, investigative powers, and whatever other means available to do whatever it takes to restore a sense of civility to this current state of chaos and mayhem.
