Attention environmental activists:

The Camden County Environmental Coalition will be meeting this Wednesday, January 17 at 7pm.

One of our members, Sue Wolf has offered to host the meeting at her house. In order to keep her address private, I ask that anyone who would like to attend please RSVP. I will then email the address to you.

Background – The Camden County Environmental Coalition is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our townships by convincing our Mayors to sign on to the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement (For more info http://www.seattle.gov/mayor/climate/), and to take real action to reduce their emissions by energy conservation, reducing energy consumption and investing in alternative forms of energy production. We will also be involved in providing information to the community so individuals can reduce their own impact on our environment.

Agenda

At our meeting in December we formulated a plan to convince Mayor Bernie Platt of Cherry Hill to sign onto the Climate Protection Agreement.

1)      Draft a letter to Mayor Platt – David and I have written a rough draft. We still need to work out some questions to finalize our letter to send to the Mayor.

2)      Provide the Mayor with suggestions for Cherry Hill to reduce its emissions

3)      Conduct an emissions inventory in Cherry Hill to determine a target for emissions reduction and where they can be cut.

At the last meeting each of us volunteered for an assignment:

David - draft a letter to the Mayor

Sue – contact Mayor of Maple Shade (already a signatory to the climate protection agreement)

Rita – offered to contact her group at Rutgers to see if they would like to be involved in conducting the emissions inventory

Mike – Work on getting a copy of the software to conduct the emission inventory and contacting Dr. Jansson at Rowan to see if there is anyone there who would teach us how to do the inventory and use the software

We will give updates on our progress and finalize the letter.

Treasurer

At the May meeting. the subject of whether we needed and/or wanted a treasurer was raised. I have thought about this far too much. As an Vice-President of the Collingswood Democrat Club, I have seen how discontent arises over how money is managed or the perception of mismanagement.
now as far as our situation goes, well let's do a reality check here:
a. We are a loosely knit collaboration of different groups all of whom want bush inc out but have their own agendas too. this is our strength and our weakness.
b. To have a treasury means you have to have checks (no pun intended), balances (oops), and accountability by the treasurer to the members and to the law.
c. So the next step is to have by-laws. this is to much red tape. we should focus on the goals of the group. i am certain there will come a time when the office of a treasuer is needed along with a president, vp, and sect. but right now i dont see us having the organization to do that.

By now you probably have surmized i dont think the idea of a treasurer is appropriate right now. i feel we can achieve a better level of participation and solidarity by paying as we go. if we can't raise the money then we have to either waste time and resources raising money or scale down the size of our plans.
In my opinion, it all comes down to commitment. As for myself, I have always believed in the power of full commitment to the principles i try to live my life by (unionism and a deep respect for honesty and ethics).
