Treasurer
Linked to groups: Progressive Democracy South Jersey
At the May meeting. the subject of whether we needed and/or wanted a treasurer was raised. I have thought about this far too much. As an Vice-President of the Collingswood Democrat Club, I have seen how discontent arises over how money is managed or the perception of mismanagement.now as far as our situation goes, well let's do a reality check here:
a. We are a loosely knit collaboration of different groups all of whom want bush inc out but have their own agendas too. this is our strength and our weakness.
b. To have a treasury means you have to have checks (no pun intended), balances (oops), and accountability by the treasurer to the members and to the law.
c. So the next step is to have by-laws. this is to much red tape. we should focus on the goals of the group. i am certain there will come a time when the office of a treasuer is needed along with a president, vp, and sect. but right now i dont see us having the organization to do that.
By now you probably have surmized i dont think the idea of a treasurer is appropriate right now. i feel we can achieve a better level of participation and solidarity by paying as we go. if we can't raise the money then we have to either waste time and resources raising money or scale down the size of our plans.
In my opinion, it all comes down to commitment. As for myself, I have always believed in the power of full commitment to the principles i try to live my life by (unionism and a deep respect for honesty and ethics).

I agree. The legalities involved in setting a formal, legal organizational structure is too time consuming and implies a state of organizational unity and purpose that I simply don't think exists at the moment. My main priority is survival (2006, then 2008).
We can return to the question if any incidents or dilemas force us to re-consider.

Maybe in the future.
