Renowned Progressive Leaders and Groups Endorse Lichtman Campaign
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Allan Lichtman picked up key endorsements from renowned national leaders and progressive organizations this week.Among those endorsing Lichtman are former Democratic U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate George McGovern of South Dakota; former Democratic Governor Ray Mabus of Mississippi, a civil rights pioneer; and John Anderson, a presidential candidate in 1980 who won nearly 7% of the vote as an Independent candidate.
"Allan Lichtman is a real progressive Democrat who I happily support," said George McGovern. "If elected to the United States Senate, I firmly believe that he will work for lasting change in our government so that it can meet ordinary Americans' needs. I encourage the people of Maryland to support him as I do."
"Allan Lichtman will bring a fresh breadth of independence and straight talk to our government that is mired in corruption and special interest politics that fails to meet the needs of average Americans," said John Anderson, independent presidential candidate in 1980. "Allan Lichtman will be the voice for those tired of politics-as-usual in the U.S. Senate."
Lichtman also picked up endorsements from two progressive organizations: the American Women Presidents, an organization dedicated to electing women to the presidency, and the Calvert County Progressive Democrats.
"We're endorsing Allan Lichtman for United States Senator from Maryland," said Mosemarie Boyd, spokeswoman for American Women Presidents. "As a champion of women's rights and civil rights across the United States for over three decades, he was instrumental in launching American Women Presidents in 2000. Allan is the best candidate in the Maryland race for U.S. Senate to help advance women politically and in all realms of life," Boyd said.
Allan Lichtman is the only male candidate for office to be endorsed by American Women Presidents.
"Allan Lichtman is not a run of the mill politician," said Norma Powers, Chair and Founder of the Calvert County Progressive Democrats. "He would bring fundamental change to Maryland and the nation as a United States Senator. He is one of us and has our interests at heart. He will represent those interests in the way we need them represented in Washington," Powers added.
"I am very grateful for the endorsements from these outstanding national political leaders and important organizations," said Lichtman. "I will live up to their trust as well as the trust of all of my supporters in my campaign to turn around conventional politics in Washington."
"These latest endorsements serve to highlight Allan Lichtman's broad appeal among those who want real change in Washington," said Evan Goldberg, Lichtman's communications director. "Maryland and the country need someone like Allan Lichtman who will be a passionate voice for those tired of special interest politics."
